Concerning developments about the Brummies, with Alan Phillips throwing in the towel. Hopefully someone will step in and keep them going, like CVS did with us in 1986.
Sadly shows the problems with the sport at the moment if a big city like Birmingham cannot sustain a speedway track. They were top of the table last season and still struggled to get the crowds in.

Be sad if they go out of business but it doesn't look good. The track at Perry Barr is quite good but like Kirky Lane there is very little atmosphere in the stadium because of the lack of terracing, and I think that's a big factor in developing a decent fan base

It needs a Tony Mole type person. Someone who knows what they are doing.

It needs a Tony Mole type person. Someone who knows what they are doing. Looks unlikely it will be Tony Mole as he's apparently withdrawn his offer. As I said, it shows where speedway is. Birmingham look like they're on the brink; Swindon cannot be in a much better position, as their crowds are awful; Coventry I have grave doubts over once they leave Brandon as well. I remember last year a comment by Phil Rising when he said that if speedway keeps cutting costs without looking at ways of increasing revenue, then it will run out of costs to cut - so very true. The closure of a club mid-season is absolutely NOT what British Speedway needs. We had a warning a few years ago when we lost Oxford.

Totally agree with those comments mb. We keep reducing the costs and the quality and then wonder why the income keeps going down. You have three choices when a business is losing money. Either you close it, or you reduce costs or you find ways to increase income. Only the latter results in any hope of things getting better in the future

Its to be hoped that the possible (and I fear inevitable loss of Birmingham) might serve as a wake up call to some of these small minded promoters that the sport in its current structure will not thrive and will merely struggle to survive. Sadly, I wont hold my breath.
They were given a great chance to build the sports profile when sky came along in 1999. Sadly, the opposite has happened, as self-interest has pushed speedway to a dark corner

Nigel Pearson tweeted today that talks are ongoing to save Birmingham so it's not all over yet, but looks 50:50 at best

This Wednesday's home meeting against Leicester has been postponed, which can only add to the concern

Tony Mole has pulled out of talks to take over the Brummies so tonight's meeting at Belle Vue looks like being their last
