Individual Event
Kaparna Semi Final: Kylmakorpi, Hampel, Rickardsson, Sullivan.
Wolves Semi Final: M.Max, P.Karlsson, Nermark, Howe.
Final: Kylmakorpi, M.Max, P.Karlsson, Hampel.
A large crowd turned up on a beautiful spring day to see Wolves start their 2003 campaign and pay tribute to a Wolves great. The meeting was a big success with some lively racing to entertain the good sized crowd.
The match got off to a bad start in Heat 1 when Ryan Sullivan picked up too much drive coming out of the second bend, tangling with David Howe and sending them both sprawling, thankfully without lasting injury. In the rerun, David followed Mikael Max home to outpace Jarek Hampel, and Wolves’ season started with a maximum heat win.
World Champion Tony Rickardsson made his first appearance in heat 3, and after Sam Ermolenko had overdone the first bend, pulled away for an easy win. Daniel Nermark (a 2003 Wolf for one night only) followed Peter home in the next to put Wolves eight up, a lead they never looked likely to lose.
Heat 5 was eventful… Adam and Sam went for the same spot of track on the 2nd bend (Sam fell, Adam excluded). In the rerun, Sam led from the gate, only to drift too wide on the second lap allowing Sullivan and Hampel past. Mikael had to work hard to hold off a charging Dubrucki in the next, with David Howe an impressive winner, the lead was back to eight points.
Peter celebrated his big night by producing a trademark switchback on the second bend to nip past Rickardsson in heat 7. More drama for Sam in Heat 9 as he was taken down by the overenthusiastic Dubrucki first time of asking, before surprisingly failing to pass Gapinski in the rerun. Mikael produced a superb ride in Heat 10, an easy win over Rickardsson in a remarkable time of 56.92 – its March 16th you know!
The interval saw the historic race between four Karlssons – with father Gunnar showing his boys the way to the chequered flag in a time slightly outside Mikael’s track record! The Kaparna announcer did the honours by commentating on this race, explaining that Gunnar had told his three sons “If I see any of you in front of me, there will be trouble!”
The impressive Hampel became the first man to beat Peter in the next heat, with Magnus just losing out in an excellent battle with Ryan Sullivan. Heat 12 brought the crowd to their feet (although to be fair, the vast majority stand up anyway.) Sam found his form to pull away for an easy win, while back from injury Daniel Nermark rode an excellent race to keep out Tony Rickardsson for 2nd place, even showing the World Champ his back wheel and the fence on a couple of occasions!
Sullivan won an excellent Heat 13 by repassing Mikael Max, before Kylmakorpi and Sullivan again illustrated their improving form by taking the last two heats. Overall an entertaining meeting, and a vital warm up for the Wolves before the real action begins.
Wolves
Mikael: Hit top form straight away. Very quick, losing only to Sullivan after a fine battle.
David: Picked himself up from a heavy fall to team up twice with Mikael for maximums. This should be a very strong pairing.
Sam: Something of an erratic first three rides, seemed to find the wrong place at the wrong time. Impressive win over Rickardsson by a large margin in his final ride.
Adam: Quite a subdued night for him. He even declined his traditional donut when winning his third ride. Seven points is a fine return though.
Peter: The day belonged to him… a big success and he thoroughly deserves it.
Magnus: I thought he was very impressive, and deserved more points. Not afraid to mix it and go for that wide line when necessary, should be good at Monmore.
Daniel: A little tentative at first (understandably) but his fourth ride should give him masses of confidence. Great to see him back in a Wolves racejacket, pity it’s only one night.
Kaparna: Sullivan hit form towards the end of the meeting. Hampel was very impressive, riding a fast wide line. Rickardsson not at his best, perhaps his best days have gone? (That’s a joke by the way). Kylmakorpi got better as the match wore on, Dubrucki could be good on a bigger track, Gapinski struggled with the tight turns and Jansson won heat 2 in fine style, then forgot how to ride the track!
In the individual event for a new GM engine, Kylmakorpi was the surprise winner, nipping inside Peter and Mikael who seemed to be more concerned with each other. Try as he might, Peter couldn’t catch him…
Five Star Ratings.
Weather: ***** Has there ever been a finer opening day?
Track Conditions: **** Plenty of dirt down and fast times.
Attendance: **** Good turn out for a Wolves great.
Entertainment Value: *** Decent racing if lacking that cutting edge.
Wolves Performance: *** A good warm up for the real thing.
Man of the Match: Peter Karlsson – the day belonged to him.
Referee (Graham Reeve): **** Correct decisions in heat 1 and 9, I’d like to see the Sam and Adam incident again…
The auction afterwards was a huge success - the racejackets went for £55 to £100 each, except for Sam's which went for a staggering £200!
Next match is Coventry at home a week on Monday (a challenge).
