Wolves suffer a mid match collapse to lose the match… but come storming back to give themselves a good chance of the bonus point. Match report compiled from the Sky TV coverage.
Heat 1 - Mark Loram ; Mikael Max ; Dean Barker ; David Howe ; (4-2)(4-2)
Loram gates, Mikael can't quite catch him. David passes Barker but he gets straight back past.
Heat 2 - Adam Shields ; Chris Neath ; Oliver Allen ; Peter Ljung ; (3-3)(7-5)
Easy win for Shields... the other three are all struggling to get round.
Heat 3 - Sam Ermolenko ; David Norris ; Adam Skornicki ; Joonas Kylmakorpi ; (2-4)(9-9)
Good start for Sam off gate 1... confident win. Adam gets in a mess from the start but soon passes Joonas on the outside.
Heat 4 - Joe Screen ; Peter Karlsson ; Oliver Allen ; Peter Ljung ; (3-3)(12-12)
Screen from the gate (4) Peter takes a couple of laps to pass Allen. Track is very difficult, especially 3rd and 4th bend. Seems too much dirt down for them to turn easily. Good start from Wolves. Ljung looks dreadful for Eastbourne.
Heat 5 - David Howe ; Mikael Max ; David Norris ; Joonas Kylmakorpi(R) ; (1-5)(13-17)
Great start from David, Mikael passes both Eagles in just over a lap... team riding for the 5-1. Great stuff!
Heat 6 - Mark Loram ; Dean Barker ; Peter Karlsson ; Chris Neath ; (5-1)(18-18)
Good gate and team riding from the home pair... they look a strong pairing.
Heat 7 - Joe Screen ; Sam Ermolenko ; Adam Skornicki ; Peter Ljung ; (3-3)(21-21)
Screen from the gate but Sam looks fast. Adam an easy 3rd, Eastbourne get Ljung's 3rd ride out of the way early... very poor night from him.
Heat 8 - Dean Barker ; David Howe ; Adam Shields(Fx) ; Oliver Allen(Fx) ; (3-2)(24-23)
Olly Allen excluded when he tangles with Shields on the back straight and they both fall. In the rerun, Shields is excluded for bringing down himself and David Howe on the 3rd bend. In the second rerun, Barker gates and beats Howe easily.
Heat 9 - David Norris ; Peter Karlsson ; Joonas Kylmakorpi ; Chris Neath ; (4-2)(28-25)
Eastbourne on a 5-1 until the last bend when Peter splits them. If only Peter could gate…
Heat 10 - Mark Loram ; Dean Barker ; Adam Skornicki ; Sam Ermolenko ; (5-1)(33-26)
Oh dear... great gate from the home duo. Sam really goes for it around the outside but fails, brave effort, then drops back on the last lap. Adam nowhere this time.
Heat 11 - Mikael Max ; Joe Screen ; Adam Shields ; David Howe ; (3-3)(36-29)
Cracking ride from Mikael, Shields passes David early on. Peter Karlsson in the next as tactical sub to join Sam against Norris and Shields.
Heat 12 - Adam Shields ; Peter Karlsson ; David Norris ; Sam Ermolenko ; (4-2)(40-31)
Dramatic race... Peter gates, Sam at the back, Shields round the outside for 4 laps all over Peter and just beats him on the line. Peter was either too slow or trying to slow it down for Sam to get through... poor ride from Sam, very disappointing. Perhaps a double tactical there would have been better?
Heat 13 - Joe Screen ; Mark Loram ; Mikael Max ; Peter Karlsson ; (5-1)(45-32)
Terrible start from Peter... Eastbourne pair ahead, Loram almost falls and goes to the back but storms straight back past the Karlssons... great ride from Loram. Wolves have fallen apart!
Heat 14 - Mikael Max ; Adam Skornicki ; Adam Shields ; Joonas Kylmakorpi ; (1-5)(46-37)
Mikael in as a tactical sub. Shields makes a mess of the 1st bend and baulks Joonas. Wolves pair away for the 5-1. Can we keep it close for the bonus?
Heat 15 - Mikael Max ; Peter Karlsson ; Joe Screen ; Mark Loram ; (1-5)(47-42)
Amazing result... very easy 5-1 for Wolves against the formbook. The deficit is reduced to just five points.
Wolves
Mikael: An excellent night for Mike apart from missing out in Heat 13. Looked very fast all night.
David: Hates the Arlington track and it showed. 100% effort though.
Sam: Another mixed night. Very good first two rides, a brave effort in his third but tailed off badly in his fourth ride.
Adam: Much improved from last night. Rode with great determination, a good night’s work.
Peter: Very disappointing until Heat 15. Poor starting just left him too much to do.
Chris: Easily beat Ljung, couldn’t be expected to do any more.
Oliver: Similar to Chris. Unlucky in Heat 8 when he stormed past Shields only for his footrest to catch the Aussie’s front wheel. Looks a determined rider who could do well for us.
Eastbourne
Loram, Screen and Barker were excellent, and Adam Shields had a couple of great rides. Ljung was simply dreadful, and although it’s early, he’ll need to improve dramatically to keep his place. They will be very disappointed to win by only five points… which still wouldn’t have been enough to win the Grand Final from last season!
Five Star Ratings
Weather: ***** Brilliant for March.
Track Conditions: ** Patchy early which caused a lot of problems.
Attendance: ** Looked poor on TV, or am I just comparing it to the Playoff Final?
Entertainment Value: *** Strange match which swung one way then the other.
Wolves Performance: *** A good result but the mid match collapse was a surprise.
Man of the Match: Mikael Max – a class act on any track.
Referee: **** Little to do other than the crashes in Heat 8 which he got right.
Next match is at Peterborough on Friday… another tough match in prospect.
