Wow! A fantastic night’s entertainment, and a match full of superb racing, drama and controversy… and a superb advert for the value of the aggregate bonus point.
Heat 1 - Mikael Max ; Ryan Sullivan ; Shane Parker ; Chris Neath ; (3-3)(3-3)
The Peterborough pair are away first, but Mikael cuts inside Parker on the back straight and sets off after Sullivan. After showing Ryan the inside line for a couple of laps, Mikael brilliantly switches to the outside on the last lap and powers past on the back straight… an excellent ride from the Wolves number one.
Heat 2 - Kenneth Bjerre ; Chris Neath ; James Grieves ; Brent Werner ; (3-3)(6-6)
The Wolves pairing make the start, but Bjerre rides a superb first lap to pass them both on the inside. Not bad for his first ride on the track!
Heat 3 - Adam Skornicki ; Hans Andersen ; Sam Ermolenko ; Piotr Protasiewicz ; (4-2)(10-8)
Excellent first bend and win for Adam. Sam makes a dreadful start but slowly gains ground, passing Pepe on the inside of the last bend for third. An Adam race win. Mmmm donuts!
Heat 4 - Chris Neath ; Peter Karlsson ; Gary Havelock ; Brent Werner ; (5-1)(15-9)
Terrific win for Chris Neath, who hits the front early and pulls away. Peter bides his time and eases inside Havelock on the second lap.
Heat 5 - Adam Skornicki ; Ryan Sullivan ; Shane Parker ; Sam Ermolenko(Fx) ; (3-3)(18-12)
First time out the Wolves duo get the better of the first couple of turns and lead down the back straight. However, Adam turns hard on the third turn, Sam takes avoiding action, gets in a mess and hits the fence. He’s disgusted with himself as he walks back to the pits. In the rerun, another superb first turn from Adam who easily holds off Sullivan for the win. Mmmm more donuts!
Heat 6 - Mikael Max ; Gary Havelock ; Kenneth Bjerre ; James Grieves ; (3-3)(21-15)
What’s this – an uneventful race?
Heat 7 - Peter Karlsson ; Chris Neath ; Piotr Protasiewicz ; Hans Andersen ; (5-1)(26-16)
Peter gates and he’s away. Chris holds the Panthers’ off easily.
Heat 8 - Ryan Sullivan ; Chris Neath ; Shane Parker ; Adam Skornicki ; (2-4)(28-20)
Sullivan gates from the home pair. Parker cuts inside Adam on the 3rd bend, Adam can’t quite catch him.
Heat 9 - Sam Ermolenko ; Adam Skornicki ; Gary Havelock ; Kenneth Bjerre ; (5-1)(33-21)
Sam powers around Havelock on the second bend, Adam follows suit on the second lap. Vital 5-1 to Wolves and the bonus is in sight…
Heat 10 - Mikael Max ; Hans Andersen ; James Grieves ; Piotr Protasiewicz ; (4-2)(37-23)
Andersen gates, Mikael stalks him for a lap before cutting inside on the back straight. James Grieves easily holds out Protasiewicz for a vital 3rd.
Heat 11 - Shane Parker ; Ryan Sullivan ; James Grieves ; Peter Karlsson(Fx) ; (1-5)(38-28)
Huge controversy. Parker takes Peter wider and wider on the first bend, Peter slams through the fence on the second bend. It looks serious, but thankfully, Peter is soon on his feet. The replay shows probably no contact, but Parker left Peter no room at all to race. Amazingly after three replays, referee David Peet excludes Peter! The rerun looks a foregone conclusion as the Aussie duo gate, but James rides an excellent first bend, cutting inside and passing them both coming out of the second bend. James tries everything to hold on, but Parker passes on the inside, and on the last lap as he’s still holding off Sullivan, his engine expires! Desperately unlucky for James who coasts over the line for third to a standing ovation.
Heat 12 - Hans Andersen ; Chris Neath ; Sam Ermolenko ; Shane Parker ; (3-3)(41-31)
Another thriller. Parker gates, Chris finds the drive to go inside him on the back straight and Sam rounds Parker for third. But Andersen rides an excellent race to pass Neath on the outside of lap four. Peterborough are still six ahead for the bonus.
Heat 13 - Mikael Max ; Peter Karlsson ; Ryan Sullivan ; Gary Havelock ; (5-1)(46-32)
Brilliant ride from Peter Karlsson. Sullivan takes him wide on the first bend, but he lines him up for a measured pass on the inside of the second bend of lap 2. A 5-1 to Wolves and they are only two behind for the bonus.
Heat 14 - Hans Andersen ; Chris Neath ; Brent Werner ; Adam Skornicki(F) ; (2-4)(48-36)
Another good ride from Andersen. Adam chases him hard, but overdoes it on the last lap, falling awkwardly on the 3rd bend. A 3-3 becomes a 2-4 – vital for the bonus.
Heat 15 - Peter Karlsson ; Mikael Max ; Hans Andersen ; Ryan Sullivan ; (5-1)(53-37)
Peterborough win the toss and take 1 and 3. Wolves need a 5-1 for a bonus point run off. Peter makes a superb first turn from gate 4 to round Sullivan. Andersen gets inside Mikael on the back straight, but can’t hold him back. Mikael passes on the second lap. The crowd go crazy as the Karlsson brothers grab the vital 5-1.
Bonus Point Run Off: Mikael Max beat Hans Andersen (fell).
More high drama. Andersen from the inside gets the better of a tight first turn and takes Mikael very wide on the 3rd and 4th bend. Mikael switches inside on the first bend of lap 2, and as he makes the pass Andersen goes down. The replays again seem to show no contact between the two… Hans seemed to be surprised to see Mikael make the pass at that point in the race, perhaps he was expecting an outside manouevre? It’s a tough call for the referee, who opts to leave the stadium with all of his limbs intact and excludes Andersen.
Wolves
Mikael was in excellent form, no stopping him tonight as he pulled off a succession of superb passes, inside and out. Brilliant.
David was covered by Rider Replacement, which produced just one point. Good news is that he appears to have no broken bones in his injured wrist, and should return soon.
Sam had another frustrating night. Recovered well from two poor opening rides by taking five points from his last two heats with much improved rides. Has to find more consistency from race to race.
Adam was in great form tonight. Two brilliant wins early in the match, and aggressive, stylish riding.
Peter was equally as brilliant as his brother. Picked himself up from a horrific crash to team up for two vital maximums with Mikael.
James rode really hard all night and deserved many more than his paid four. A heroic effort in Heat 11 for no reward.
Chris was simply inspired tonight, probably the best performance of his Wolves career. He earned every one of his fourteen points and when he hit the front he was very fast.
Peterborough
They must be shocked to lose the bonus point after defending a 16 point lead against a weakened Wolves team. Only rider to come out of the match with much credit was Hans Andersen, who recovered from a bad start. He wins quote of the night for his Sky interview, where he tells a shocked Kelvin Tatum that when he saw the track tonight thought “F***ing hell, that’s small!” Whoops!
Parker commenting on his stuffing of Peter “He has a brain in his head. He could have throttled back and let me go. It was a racing incident, he would have done exactly the same to me.” We’ve seen this sort of thing before from Parker, and when Peter hears that interview, I’m sure he’ll agree that yes, he will do the same thing to Parker when the opportunity arises!
Five Star Ratings
Weather: ***** Excellent yet again.
Track Conditions: ***** Superb racing with passing in virtually very race.
Attendance: *** Lower than normal due to the TV coverage, but the atmosphere was electric.
Entertainment Value: ***** The race for the bonus point made this a superb match with a bit of everything. Looked great on TV too.
Wolves Performance: ***** A brilliant team effort. The match looked tough without David, but the Magnificent Six did their fans proud.
Man of the Match: Peter and Mikael were brilliant, but it has to be Chris Neath.
Referee (David Peet): * How he could watch three replays and still exclude Peter Karlsson defies belief. Does he understand this sport? I’ll give him one star for his run off decision – at least he was consistent I suppose.
