Eastbourne 43 WOLVES 49, Elite League B, Saturday 10th July
Eastbourne
1. David Norris 3-Fx-3-3-3 = 12
2. R/R Adrian Miedzinski 0-2-4-0 = 6
3. Joonas Kylmakorpi 0-0 = 0 (Withdrew injured)
4. Adam Shields 2-1-4-3-3 = 13
5. Nicki Pedersen 3-Fx-3-2*-1 = 9+1
6. Mads Korneliussen Fx-2-1-0-0-0-1 = 4
7. Edward Kennett. 0-1-1-1*-0-2 = 5+1
Wolves
1. Mikael Max 2-3-2-0-0 = 7
2. R/R Daniel Nermark 1*-2*-3-2* = 7+3
3. Fredrik Lindgren 3-2*-2*-2-3 = 12+2
4. David Howe 1-3-3-1*-2 = 10+1
5. Sam Ermolenko 2-3-1*-1-2 = 9+1
6. Adam Skornicki 1*-3-1-2-1*-1 = 9+2
7. Richard Juul 2*-0-0-0 = 2+1
I was always in doubt that the meeting would take place because of the appalling weather in the Midlands before I left and the torrential rain on the journey down. However, the Eastbourne management suffered my phone calls at regular intervals and repeatedly assured me that the weather was dry and sunny at Arlington. They were right! It did cloud over during the meeting but the rain held off until just after the victory parade.
A great win for Wolves against an Eastbourne side that looked weak before the meeting but one that could have managed a win if their senior riders had not squandered their tactical rides in an incredibly self-destructive period in the middle of the meeting. Possibly something we would expect from Pedersen but unusual for Norris to throw his toys out so dramatically.
Heat Details
(Adapted from Fans’ Forum Updates by MM2)
Heat 1, David Norris 3, R/R Edward Kennett 0, Mikael Max 2, R/R Adam Skornicki 1*,
3-3, 3-3.
First time out, Kennett falls on 1st bend. Nobody touched him but all 4 back and Kennett is given extra time to repair his machine! Doh! Mikael gates in the rerun but turns too tight on the egg shaped 1st bend and Norris passes him. Adam a safe 3rd.
Heat 2, Mads Korneliussen Fx, Edward Kennett 1, Adam Skornicki 3, Richard Juul 2*,
1-5, 4-8
1st time out Kennett falls on the 1st bend nobody touched him but all 4 back. Stop me if you've heard this before! In the rerun, Korneliussen falls on 1st bend. Fortunately, the red exclusion light obviously works. Kennett's blue light obviously doesn't! Rerun - Adam gates and takes Kennett wide on 1st bend which allows Richard through the gap for a confidence boosting 5-1.
Heat 3, Joonas Kylmakorpi 0, Adam Shields 2, Fredrik Lindgren 3, David Howe 1,
2-4, 6-12
Wolves gate but the ref calls all 4 back and warns Freddie for moving at the start. Freddie is not put off and makes a fine start in the rerun. Joonas well behind at the back and appears to be still suffering from his injury.
Heat 4, Nicki Pedersen 3, Edward Kennett 1, Sam Ermolenko 2, Richard Juul 0,
4-2, 10-14
Pedersen from the gate. Sam not far behind until a big mistake on the last lap and almost falls but recovers and holds his place. Kennett gates on Juul.
Heat 5, Joonas Kylmakorpi 0, Adam Shields 1, Mikael Max 3, R/R Fredrik Lindgren 2*,
1-5, 11-19
Hard first bend from Mikael who takes Shields wide allowing Freddie through for the 5-1! Joonas doesn't look fit. Shields does not seem to try too hard to pass Freddie as Eastie go 8 down for the next heat. Isn’t there a new rule about this!!
Heat 6, David Norris T/R Fell excl, R/R Mads Korneliussen 2, Sam Ermolenko 3, Adam Skornicki 1, 2-4, 13-23
Norris in as double points. Wolves gate for a 5-1, Norris round the outside and tries to lean on Sam going into the 3rd bend, 2nd lap. Norris down and furious, ref Phil Griffin excludes Norris. There was no contact between the riders and the decision was 100% correct. Norris throws his toys out of the pram, goes back to the pits and threatens Sam. Calls him a F..W.. and other stuff and says he'll get him back later! In the rerun, another Wolves 5-1 on the cards but Adam's bike slows on the 3rd lap allowing Mads through. Adam coaxes his machine round for a lap and a quarter for the single point.
Heat 7, Nicki Pedersen T/R Fell Excluded!!!, Mads Korneliussen 1, Fredrik Lindgren 2*, David Howe 3, 1-5, 14-28
More high drama. Pedersen in as double points. Another superb gate from Wolves, on a 5-1. Nicki tries to go round them and turns tight trying to force his way through. Our riders hold their ground, Nicki tangles with David and goes down. David also falls. Pedersen excluded! Once again this was the right decision, the Eastbourne fans near to me have no complaints on either decision. Nicki goes back to the pits and says to CVS (overheard by Wolves fans) "This is totally unacceptable Chris. I'll get you back for this!" I've no idea what CVS has done, but Pedersen's annoyed, so we are happy! Both tacticals wasted. In the rerun, easy 5-1 from the gate. Medics are called to the pits to see Kylmakorpi who is suffering from his existing injury.
Heat 8, T/S (15 metres) Adam Shields 4, Edward Kennett 1, R/R David Howe 3, Richard Juul 0, 5-3, 19-31
Shields in as double points from 15 metres back (Tactical Substitute). Wolves gate for a 5-1 (how many times have I typed that tonight?). On the last lap, Kennett passes Juul and manages to slow him up enough to get Shields through for 4 points. Good ride from Kennett... no stopping David at the front though.
Heat 9, Edward Kennett (replaced JK) 0, Adam Shields 3, Sam Ermolenko 1*, Adam Skornicki 2, 3-3, 22-34
Shields led from the gate. The Wolves pair pack in for the 3-3.
Heat 10, David Norris 3, R/R Mads K 0, Fredrik Lindgren 2, David Howe 1*,
3-3, 25-37.
Freddie gates on the inside and moves out only slightly... Norris forced wide and bails out waving his arms frantically. Ref had already stopped the race for an unsatisfactory start and he warns Freddie for moving at the start again. Rerun is an uneventful win for Norris from the gate. However as they slow down, he waits for Freddie and rides him out towards the fence (at fairly slow speed). They exchange a few words on the way back to the pits.
Heat 11, Nicki Pedersen 3, Mads Korneliussen 0, Mikael Max 2, R/R Adam Skornicki 1*,
3-3, 28-40
From the gate and once again we seem happy with the shared points.
Heat 12, Mads K (in for JK withdrawn) 0, Edward Kennett 2, Fredrik Lindgren 3, Adam Skornicki 1,
2-4, 30-44
Joonas out of the meeting injured. Wolves on a 5-1 until the last bend when Adam's bike plays up again and he just makes it over the line for third place! That machine has cost him 4 paid points so far and it has whittled our potential lead down from 28-46!
Heat 13, David Norris 3, Nicki Pedersen 2*, Mikael Max 0, Sam Ermolenko 1,
5-1, 35-45
Norris gated, Mikael round the outside but Norris takes him way out wide right to the fourth bend fence where he has to close the throttle or crash. Pedersen through. Mikael chased again and was stuffed for a 2nd time later in the race and fell back to last but this time it was by Pedersen as Mikael attempted to pass on the second bend of lap 3. Sam picked up the last point but was not in amongst the action.
Heat 14, Adam Shields 3, Mads Korneliussen 1, David Howe 2 , Richard Juul 0,
4-2, 39-47
Shields passed David on the 1st bend and then held the lead. Richard could not catch an improved Kennett.
Heat 15, David Norris 3, Nicki Pedersen 1, Mikael Max 0, Sam Ermolenko 2,
4-2, 43-49
Superb race. Eastbourne gate for a 5-1, brilliant ride from Sam who blasts right around the outside and takes the lead! Norris catches him and passes him later in the race. Brilliant, fair racing. After the race, Nicki sprays Sam with shale as they slow down. Sam reacts furiously and rides onto the centre green, and tries to get Nicki to come over and fight him! Nicki just rides back into the pits.
However... Wolfie watches them in the pits. Both riders had grins on their faces and they shook hands. Wolfie thinks this was just a wind up to entertain the crowd!
But… BWitcher also watched it and said that before they shook hands Sam was really furious and being restrained by Wolves mechanics/officials.
It was a great thrill to go to Eastbourne and come away with the league points but I can’t help thinking we should have won by a much, much bigger margin. Mind you – does it really matter as long as we ride a good meeting on Monday to get the remaining three league points? I heard that it was suggested on the Forum that we provide a couple of prams in the Eastbourne side of the pit area on Monday so that they have already got the facility to chuck their toys out!! Great idea.
Well done to all of the Wolves team tonight for really getting stuck in and wanting the win and for providing a great night’s entertainment for the reasonably large group of Wolves travelling fans. One noticeable change in our performance was the quality of our starting. I don’t remember a meeting where we have made such consistently good gates and this obviously has a massive effect on the outcome and is a really welcome addition to our arsenal.
