Edward Kennett 0 1 2 0 0 =3
Andrew Moore 1 0 0 0 =1
After Saturday night’s antics at Arlington, many expected a healthy dose of on-track fireworks in this one, but sadly they never happened. Wolves got on with the job well, with only one incident for the World Champion (from what we could see, there was no contact) but controversial refereeing certainly got the fans fired up midway through. Despite using three Double rides, the Eagles could not catch the Wolves, with Adam looking particularly impressive from the reserve berth.
With Kylmakorpi and Miedzinski still out injured, Ostergaard transferred to the Isle of Wight and Jensen nowhere to be seen, it was a slightly weakened Eastbourne line-up which took to the track.
Heat 1: Norris, Max, Neath, Watt, 55.87 (new track record). 3-3, 3-3.
Doris did just what we didn’t want, blasting away from the start to record a fast wins (although no-one was more surprised than me to hear that he had broken Mikael’s track record). Chris took third from Watty at turn two but lost it at the end of the lap, before retaking the place midway round lap two.
Heat 2: Lindgren, Skornicki, Moore, Kennett, 56.93. 5-1, 8-4.
A straightforward 5-1, with the Eastbourne reserves swapping places at the back.
Heat 3: Howe, Shields, Neath, Watt, 57.89. 4-2, 12-6.
Chris went wide on the first turn allowing the Eagles to chase David, who moved Shields out well at the end of lap one. Chris took third from Watty on lap two, and came close to Shields after he locked up out of turn two.
Heat 4: Pedersen, Skornicki, Ermolenko, Moore, 57.89. 3-3, 15-9.
Nicki gated as expected, only for Adam to put him wide down the back straight, although this didn’t stop Nicki from winning.
Heat 5: Norris, Howe, Neath, Watt, 56.90. 2-4, 17-13.
Eastbourne led off, but the slow starting David fought inside Watty on lap two, staying side-by-side for half a lap before forging ahead. Sadly, he couldn’t catch the flying Doris.
Heat 6: Skornicki, Max, Kennett, Pedersen (fell), 57.49. 5-1, 22-14.
Adam’s impressive night continued as he outgated Nicki, with Mikael leading out of the first turn. Starting lap two Nicki slid off at turn one – no contact – b but did the decent thing and got back up straight away, only to ride sulkily into the pits while the race continued. Mmm donuts!
Heat 7 (re-run x2): Ermolenko, Kennett, Shields, Lindgren (f.excl), 57.11. 3-3, 25-17.
At the first attempt Sam appeared to bring down Kennett on the first turn, but all four were allowed back in the rerun. Eastbourne led away at the second try, but both Wolves pushed inside Shields at turn three. Freddie then crashed out starting lap two, with Shields also sliding off in avoidance. The second rerun saw Sam lead throughout despite pressure early on from the Eagles.
Heat 8: Skornicki, Howe, Watt, Moore, 58.89. 5-1, 30-18.
Adam gated, while Moore locked up on turn two forcing David to slow. He was straight through into third, before taking the inside line on Watty and shunting him aside at turn four to take a superb second. Mmm more donuts!
Heat 9: Norris (double from 15m), Pedersen, Howe, Neath, 58.89. 1-8, 31-26.
Pedersen, Norris (double), Howe, Neath, 58.89. 1-7, 31-25.
Norris was brought in for a double, strangely of the 15-metre handicap. For the first lap, it looked as if things were going Wolves’ way, with David putting Nicki wide (again!) to lead. On the home straight David was confused by the sun shining on one of the red stop lights and slowed, also slowing Chris down and allowing the opposition pair through. Nicki led the rest of the way, and amusingly failed to let Doris through for the 8-1. The referee then stunned and infuriated everyone (well, except the Eastbourne fans) by announcing Doris – who was half a length behind at the finish line – as the winner, giving Eastbourne the 8-1. This is the third time that this inexcusable act has happened at Monmore this year, and Wolves fans understandably went mental. Diego Maradona himself would be proud of referee Peter Clarke.
NB: The text in blue is how the score should have been.
Heat 10: Max, Shields, Lindgren, Kennett, 57.83. 4-2, 35-28.
4-2, 35-27
Mikael led but locked up out of turn four, delaying Freddie and sending him back to third. Shields led until Mikael swept around the outside starting the last lap.
Heat 11: Ermolenko, Norris, Lindgren, Watt, 57.37. 4-2, 39-30.
4-2, 39-29
Doris gated but it was Sam who led at turn one. Freddie went outside Watty for third starting lap two, while Doris challenged Sam only to run wide on the last lap and settle for second.
Heat 12: Skornicki, Neath, Shields (double), Kennett, 59.21. 5-2, 44-32.
5-2, 44-31
Chris made the best start, while Adam made it past Shields for third on lap one, repeating the move on Kennett on lap two. Kennett made it back into second on lap three only for Adam to blast around him starting the final lap. Kennett then slowed to let Shields take the double points for third – given correctly this time.
Heat 13: Max, Pedersen (double), Norris, Ermolenko, 59.24. 3-5, 47-37.
3-5, 47-36
Nicki gated only for Mikael and Doris to move inside him on the back straight, while Sam lifted at the back out of turn for as the track got slicker once again.
Heat 14: Howe, Shields, Lindgren, Moore, 58.67. 4-2, 51-39.
4-2, 51-38
Shields led (again!) around the first lap until David used the fast outside line to take the lead at turn four. Freddie went around Moore ending lap three.
Heat 15: Max, Pedersen, Norris, Skornicki, 58.45. 3-3, 54-42.
3-3, 54-41
From the gate, with Adam not quite managing to split the Eagles pairing.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: **** Cooled down towards the end, but a pleasant night.
Track conditions: **** Very fast early on, but the blue groove on the pits turn appeared with three heats to go.
Attendance: **** A large vole of a crowd.
Wolves Performance: ***** Excellent all round – concentrating on racing rather than revenge for Saturday.
Entertainment Value: **** Some good racing, and some heated moments!
Man of the Match: With 13 points from the reserve slot, and a Heat 15 Place, it’s just got to be Adam Skornicki.
Referee: * One star for getting the race stoppages right – see above for the rest.
Rider Ratings:
Mikael Max: **** Beaten by Doris – looked a bit slow early on.
Chris Neath: *** Recovering his form well.
David Howe: ***** Unusually aggressive from the back.
Sam Ermolenko: **** Good all-round, but not quite enough to make Heat 15.
Fredrik Lindgren: **** A measured performance.
Adam Skornicki: ***** Fast gating and great racing.
As a footnote, can we please get the referee’s box positioned level with the start line at Monmore? Wrong decisions when it comes to race results are becoming more frequent at the Green, and this cannot go on. Never mind for now, let’s go and win at Coventry next week!
I’ll leave the last words to Sam, who on the post-meeting parade commented “Controversy? No, we just beat ‘em!”
See you at the Green (if any of you are going next Monday!)
