(If there are any errors in the scorechart please contact Sugababe – she filled the programme in last night).
Wolves banged in another solid all-round performance in this one, but many were hoping for a bigger win than this. A few cracks showed, with poor gating once again being the main bugbear - the lowlight being the 1-8 in heat 12, when Freddie and Simon could not even catch young gun Daniel King. The track was slightly slick once more, but the racing did not suffer for it.
Wolves’ task looked slightly easier when it was worked out that only Louis, Jansson and the reserves could take rider replacement rides, so if Louis had an off night a big win looked likely – how wrong can you get?
Ipswich won the toss, taking gates two and four.
Heat 1: Max, Lindgren, Jansson, Andersen (f.rem), 56.42. 5-1, 5-1.
Andersen spun off at turn two but quickly remounted, setting Wolves up nicely for the 5-1.
Heat 2: Stead, Doolan, King (f.rem), Skornicki (ret), 58.82. 3-3, 8-4.
Adam went inside King to lead, while pressure from Simon paid off as half distance as he powered inside King who slid off. At the same moment Adam’s chain came off on the back straight, with Simon lucky to miss him as he slowed but he continued for the win to spare Wolves’ blushes.
Heat 3: Howe, Louis, Lindgren, Jansson, 58.06. 4-2, 12-6.
Freddie went around Jansson for second on the first lap only for Louis to fly inside them both. Freddie took the place back half a lap later and valiantly held on until the end of lap three.
Heat 4: Nicholls, Stead, Ermolenko, Doolan, 57.18. 3-3, 15-9.
From the gate, except for Sam taking Doolan on the first lap for third.
Heat 5: Andersen, Jansson, Howe, Lindgren, 58.74. 1-5,16-14.
David started OK but dropped back on the first lap, with the visitors team-riding to the win…oh dear.
Heat 6: Skornicki, Nicholls, Max, King (fell), 58.18.
King caught the fence on turn two and fell, just managing to get off the track in time. Wolves led but Nicholls went around Mikael on lap two, only to be cut off well by Adam around the last lap. With Adam out in the next race, there were no donuts – he was obviously saving them for when he won the next one!
Heat 7 (re-run): Louis, Ermolenko, King, Skornicki (f.exc), 58.17. 2-4, 22-20.
Or not as the case may be! Adam slid off on turn two and tried to get up, but the red light came on just as Sam blasted round Louis on turn three. The rerun saw Sam gate, but then go straight on at turn one handing Ipswich the advantage. On the second lap he was inside Kin for second, and challenged hard for the lead but was beaten by the flying Louis.
Heat 8: Stead, Jansson, Howe, Doolan, 58.57. 4-2, 26-22.
Jansson went second on the back straight behind Simon, while Doolan beat David away from the line, only for David to go inside the Aussie for third at half distance. He tried the same move on Jansson late on, but the wide line worked for the Swede and he held on.
Heat 9: Nicholls, Lindgren, Howe, King, 58.02. 3-3, 29-25.
David looked to have got the start right, but ran wide allowing Nicholls to take it up. Freddie used the inside line down the back straight to take third.
Heat 10: Louis, Max, Stead, King, 58.34. 3-3, 32-28.
Despite Mikael using his favoured outside line, he failed to stop Louis from bursting through. Mikael coaxed it round for second despite suffering a misfire.
Heat 11: Ermolenko, Skornicki, Andersen, Jansson, 59.10. 5-1, 37-29.
Sam powered through to lead ending lap one, while Adam was left at the back. The Pole’s never-say-die attitude showed on the next lap, as he bullied his way superbly past the visitors on the inside to complete the 5-1. Mmmm donuts!
Heat 12: Louis (double), King, Stead, Lindgren (fell), 60.14. 1-8, 38-37.
OH NO! Freddie locked up on turn two allowing King clear, while Louis’s superlative form showed as he blasted past both Wolves on the second lap, with Freddie spinning off at the end of the lap. King then let Louis through to complete the 8-1, and all suddenly looked lost for the Wolves.
Heat 13: Ermolenko, Max, Nicholls, Andersen, 59.13. 5-1, 43-38.
What a race! It was Ipswich one and two out of the start (again!) with Sam taking third on the back straight as Nicholls fell back. Sam then powered outside Andersen to lead, with Mikael going inside him on turn two to swing it back in our favour – great stuff!
Heat 14: Louis, Skornicki, Howe, King, 59.22. 3-3, 46-41.
David missed the start again, but powered inside King for third after half a lap. Adam led, withstanding huge pressure from Louis, but finally lost out starting the final lap.
Heat 15: Max, Nicholls, Louis, Ermolenko, 58.93. 3-3, 49-44.
Wolves slow off the gate again (!), but Mikael cut down the inside to lead with Sam in third. Nicholls went around Mikael to lead but Mikael slipped back up the inside. Sam went round the boards (or should that be airbags?) on lap three to drop to the back.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** Another fine night with no hint of rain.
Track conditions: **** Slightly slick but OK overall.
Attendance: **** A large weasel of a crowd (thanks Jazzy).
Wolves Performance: *** The win would have been bigger if only we could learn to gate.
Entertainment value: ***** Great racing all round.
Man of the Match: It could have gone to any one of the side tonight, but it goes to Mikael Max for overcoming machinery troubles to post another good score.
Referee: ***** Some starts were a little ragged, but Wolves never gated so there was no reason to call them back (Cynical? Me?).
Rider Ratings:
Mikael Max: **** Decent scoring despite misfiring.
Fredrik Lindgren: *** Not too bad from the heat leader slot.
David Howe: *** Couldn’t gate, but made up for it with some decent racing.
Sam Ermolenko: **** Some good overtaking moves late on.
Adam Skornicki: **** Flying round the inside line.
Simon Stead: **** Excellent from the reserve berth – why isn’t he in the World Cup?
It was also good to see Eric Carrillo receiving a tutorial from Sam after the meeting, and he looked to be improving round Monmore (OK that’s shut Sugababe up).
No action next week as it’s the Speedway World Cup – come on England!
See you at the quiz tonight
