IPSWICH 51 WOLVES 39, ELITE LEAGUE B, THURSDAY JULY 29TH
Evening Star Witches:
Hans Andersen 2 2 3 2* 3 =12+1
Kim Jansson 1* 3 1* 2 2* =9+3
Jesper B. Jensen R/R
Chris Louis 2* 1 3 3 3 =12+1
Scott Nicholls 3 3 3 3 2* =14+1
Daniel King 1 0 1 1 0 0 1 =4
Jason Bunyan 0 0 0 =0
Parry’s International Wolves:
Mikael Max 3 3 2 1 1 =10
Daniel Nermark R/R
Chris Neath 0 0 0 =0
David Howe 1 2 1 1* 2 =7+1
Sam Ermolenko 1* 3 X 0 0 =4+1
Fredrik Lindgren 3 2* 0 1 0 2 =8+1
Adam Skornicki 2* 2 3 2 1* R =10+2
This scoreline suggests a typical Ipswich performance from the lads, but in reality we were in with a chance right up to heat 13. The clincher for the home side was two 5-1s in heats 13 and 15, plus mechanical problems for the Wolves – Chris in particular suffering badly. This defeat was in no way through lack of trying, with Freddie and Adam both showing maximum effort including some fast gating (yes, you heard that right!), and David also striving all the way.
Wolves won the toss and took one and three.
Heat 1: Max, Andersen, Jansson, Neath, 59.2. 3-3, 3-3.
Mikael in front from turn one. Chris came out on Sam’s machine after suffering problems with his own before the start, but couldn’t quite catch Jansson.
Heat 2: Lindgren, Skornicki, King, Bunyan, 60.6. 1-5, 4-8.
From the gate, incredibly enough.
Heat 3: Jansson, Louis, Howe, Neath. 61.3. 5-1, 9-9.
Chris best away this time (on his own bike), but he slowed up allowing the pack through.
Heat 4: Nicholls, Skornicki, Ermolenko, Bunyan, 60.7. 3-3, 12-12.
Adam gated again, but Nicholls was just too quick for him and took the lead at turn three. Sam took Bunyip for third ending the first lap.
Heat 5: Max, Lindgren, Louis, King, 60.9. 1-5, 13-17.
From the start once again, despite Freddie coming under pressure from Louis around the last lap. It was claimed that Louis was suffering clutch problems which slowed him up.
Heat 6: Ermolenko, Andersen, Jansson, Lindgren, 61.1. 3-3, 16-20.
Sam kept the inside line on the home pair on turn one for the lead, and pulled away for the win. Freddie couldn’t repeat heat 5, but caught Jansson on the last lap.
Heat 7: Nicholls, Howe, King, Neath, 61.4. 4-2, 20-22.
A superb ride from David sees him gate and hold out Nicholls for three laps, before the home skipper sweeps around him on turn two of the last lap for the win. Chris looks out of touch again.
Heat 8 (re-run): Skornicki, Jansson, Lindgren, Bunyan (exc), 61.9. 2-4, 22-26.
The tapes were held for ages, but when they went up it was Jansson who led. On lap three last-placed Bunyip went wide on turn four and clipped the fence, dislodging a panel. The race was stopped and Bunyip was excluded. The rerun saw Adam lead all the way, with all three riders staying close throughout. Very few spectators appeared to notice the seagull which stayed put on the outside of turn two (on the shale) throughout the race, with the riders moving either side of it! It finally moved after almost being collected on the run-down lap!
The interval followed with a collection for the Benevolent Fund, with the riders walking round the terraces. The referee confused several fans and riders by using the two-minute warning to call them back to the pits – including Freddie who thought the next heat was starting!
Heat 9 (re-run): Louis, Skornicki, King, Ermolenko (f.exc), 60.9.
Freddie was spared a sprint back to the pits as Adam replaced him. Louis gated but Sam challenged around the outside, before running wide on turn three and crashing spectacularly. From my vantage point I couldn’t tell whether there was any contact, but Sam was excluded. The rerun saw Louis run away in front for the win.
Heat 10: Andersen, Jansson, Howe, Lindgren, 62.0. 5-1, 31-29.
Freddie tried hard on the inside line to take second from Jansson, but locked up wildly on the last turn allowing David into third and we go behind for the first time tonight.
Heat 11: Nicholls, Max, Howe, King, 60.6. 3-3, 34-32.
From the gate.
Heat 12: Louis, Lindgren, Skornicki, King, 61.6 3-3, 37-35.
Louis from the gate, with Adam having a good battle with King around the first lap before securing third.
Heat 13: Nicholls, Andersen, Max, Ermolenko, 61.8. 5-1, 42-36.
Ipswich from the gate, despite pressure from Mikael around the second lap. Our chance of the bonus point suddenly looks doubtful.
Heat 14: Louis, Howe, King, Skornicki (ret), 61.8. 4-2, 46-38.
David led the first lap until Louis shot down the inside of the home straight to take it up. Adam held third but then suffered an engine failure on the very last turn allowing King through, leaving Wolves needing a 5-1 for the bonus point.
Heat 15: Andersen, Nicholls, Max, Ermolenko, 62.1. 5-1, 51-39.
It was never going to happen, was it? Ipswich team-rode from the start, with Mikael trying but failing to make any impression.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** A perfect night.
Track conditions: **** Similar to a Wolves track – slickened later on.
Attendance: ***** A stoat by Ipswich standards – their biggest crowd of the season.
Wolves Performance: ***** Excellent all round, with consistent gating and no such thing as giving up.
Entertainment value: *** Slick track lessened the action.
Man of the Match: For pure effort it goes to Fredrik Lindgren.
Referee (Frank Ebdon): ***** Correct throughout.
Rider Ratings:
Mikael Max: **** Good gating and good effort.
Chris Neath: ** Let down by his bikes, but was still smiling afterwards.
David Howe: **** Some great racing, and almost beat Scott Nicholls.
Sam Ermolenko: *** Couldn’t catch the Ipswich heat leaders late on.
Fredrik Lindgren: ***** Does this lad ever give up?
Adam Skornicki: ***** I can’t award a joint man of the match, but if I could…
So, we didn’t quite pull off the bonus point this time – a higher home score would have improved matters. No action next week as it’s the World Cup, so let’s hope David, Chris and Simon do well…oh yes, they got overlooked again didn’t they? Still, let’s hope England/Team GB at least reach the final.
