Wolves’ chances of a rare victory at Peterborough were virtually ended before the match had begun. In form reserve Simon Stead was riding for Workington at Kings Lynn so Chris Neath was number 6, then Mikael Max was forced out with the after-effects of a crash in the World Cup Final a few days earlier. At short notice he was replaced by Andy Smith and the small band of travelling fans were faced with the nightmare scenario of Smith wearing the famous Wolves number one racejacket. So it had finally come to this…
Heat 1 - Gary Havelock ; Lukas Dryml ; Andy Smith ; Chris Neath(R) ; (5-1)(5-1)
The strong looking home pairing make no mistake from the start for a predictable 5-1. Chris’ chain snaps at the back.
Heat 2 - Adam Skornicki ; Norbert Magosi ; Chris Neath ; Ricky Ashworth(R) ; (2-4)(7-5)
Adam makes a fine start from gate 3 and the expected challenge from Ashworth never materialises… his bike stops on the 3rd lap at the back.
Heat 3 - Henning Bager ; Sam Ermolenko ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Ales Dryml(R) ; (3-3)(10-8)
The gremlins strike again, this time it’s Ales Dryml who barely gets off the start line. Bager looks to have the race under control when his bike starts misfiring on the last lap. He slows alarmingly coming off the last bend and Sam takes avoiding action. They cross the line virtually together but the referee gives the home man the verdict.
Heat 4 - Lee Richardson ; Ricky Ashworth ; Adam Skornicki ; David Howe ; (5-1)(15-9)
An easy 5-1 for the home pair as neither Wolf can mount a challenge. David looks all at sea at the back.
Heat 5 - Henning Bager ; Ales Dryml ; Chris Neath ; Andy Smith(R) ; (5-1)(20-10)
Chris makes a fine start from gate 1 but gets mugged by Bager and Smith going down the back straight… he simply doesn’t have the speed for this track. Ales Dryml relieves him of 3rd place on the 2nd lap. Smith has a safe second place denied him by an engine failure on the last lap… what is it with these engines tonight?
Heat 6 - Lukas Dryml ; Gary Havelock ; David Howe ; Adam Skornicki ; (5-1)(25-11)
Adam makes a fine start to lead around the first bend. Lukas rides a very hard second bend, charging over from the inside to take Adam’s outside line. Adam has to take drastic action to avoid a collision and ends up at the back. He is not at all impressed with Dryml and exchanges a few choice words with him after the race. Wolves’ misery continues with a third successive 5-1.
Heat 7 - Lee Richardson ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Norbert Magosi ; Sam Ermolenko ; (4-2)(29-13)
Richardson pulls away for an easy win. Sam goes into the 3rd bend in second and falls off… you know, his usual trademark, back wheel slides too far sort of fall. 16 points behind now and a real Showground style hammering looks on the cards.
Heat 8 - Lukas Dryml ; Fredrik Lindgren (Tactical Ride) ; Adam Skornicki ; Ricky Ashworth ; (3-5)(32-18)
Peter Adams introduces Fredrik as rider replacement on a double points tactical ride… a decent decision given that he looks our most effective rider. He can’t beat Lukas Dryml but the Wolves riders fill the minor placings to pull a couple of points back. Good ride from Adam who beats Ashworth out of the start and lets Lindgren past for the double points.
Heat 9 - David Howe ; Ales Dryml ; Chris Neath ; Henning Bager ; (2-4)(34-22)
Shock, horror… Wolves heat win! Completely out of the blue, David makes a fine start and holds on for the win. Bager makes a complete hash of the second bend almost taking to the grass and can’t even challenge Chris for 3rd place.
Heat 10 - Gary Havelock ; Sam Ermolenko ; Lukas Dryml ; Fredrik Lindgren ; (4-2)(38-24)
Havelock is away at the front with Wolves riders in second and third. It looks fairly safe but Freddie seems to nod off on the last lap and Lukas makes up a lot of ground to pass him easily on the back straight. Engine problems or lack of concentration? Hard to tell.
Heat 11 - Lee Richardson ; Andy Smith ; Adam Skornicki ; Norbert Magosi ; (3-3)(41-27)
From the gate… predictable result.
Heat 12 - Fredrik Lindgren ; Henning Bager ; Ricky Ashworth ; Chris Neath ; (3-3)(44-30)
A cracking race at the front. Bager gates but Freddie rides a fine outside line to take the lead on the 3rd bend. Bager is really aggressive, diving up the inside of Freddie on the last lap and pushing him right out to the fence… however our Swedish star won’t be denied and refuses to give in, holding his line in the smallest of spaces. They cross the finish line too close to call and collide going into the 1st bend both ending in a heap. Bager has the cheek to blame Freddie for this, squaring up to him aggressively. Freddie gives him the sort of look you save for people who try to force you off the track then blame you for it… and he has the last laugh as referee Tony Steele gives him the decision on the line.
Heat 13 - Lee Richardson ; Andy Smith ; Gary Havelock ; David Howe ; (4-2)(48-32)
The home pair look set for a 5-1 but a fine ride from Andy Smith as he splits them on the 3rd lap, pushing Havelock out wide on the 3rd bend. David well adrift at the back again.
Heat 14 - Sam Ermolenko (Tactical Ride) ; Ales Dryml ; Norbert Magosi ; Adam Skornicki ; (3-6)(51-38)
Sam has a double points ride and a fine win. He looks for Adam on the first lap but unfortunately he has missed the gate and is nowhere.
Heat 15 - Sam Ermolenko ; Lee Richardson ; Gary Havelock ; Fredrik Lindgren(R) ; (3-3)(54-41)
This is Sam’s last scheduled visit to the Showground… and he signs off in superb style. He makes a fine start and rides a really wide line, pulling away at the front from the previously unbeaten Richardson. Freddie has a safe 3rd place in front of Havelock until his bike stops on the last lap. Sam does a lap of wheelies, then turns around on the first bend and does his first farewell lap of the year, waving goodbye to the crowd who give him a superb reception. A very poignant moment which brings a lump to the throat… and we have many more of these to come for the rest of the year.
Overall a pretty dull affair and a typical Wolves at Peterborough performance… hammered in the early heats then restrict the damage at the end. A meeting saved by Freddie’s great battle with Bager and Sam’s first farewell. Genuinely the beginning of the end of a great Wolves career.
Five Star Ratings
Andy Smith *** Did as well as we could have expected. Unfortunate to lose a couple of points with an engine failure and a fine ride in heat 13. Still embarrassing to see him as Wolves number one though…
Freddie **** Another very promising performance. For someone so inexperienced he was much more competitive than many of his team mates.
Sam **** Started rather slowly but his final two races were vintage stuff yet again.
David ** It’s hard to believe that David rode at Peterborough for so long, he always seems to struggle there for Wolves. His shock win in heat 9 saved him from one star.
Chris ** Tried hard, his gating was good but he simply didn’t have the speed. Not his sort of track at all.
Adam ** A fine win in heat 2 but did precious little after that. With the two reserves needing to take 3 rider replacement rides under the new averages, we need some big scores from Adam in the matches to come.
Track: *** Got dry and slick later on but this was due to the weather.
Weather: **** Warm and dry, the heavy storms thankfully avoided Peterborough.
Crowd: ** Very poor… I’d say no more than 500 with the Grandstand less than half full.
Entertainment Value: ** A fairly dull affair.
Wolves Performance: ** The aim was to keep the score close for the bonus. A 13 points deficit is not impossible but fairly unlikely.
Man of the Match: It might have been Freddie until Sudden Sam’s brilliant last two heats.
