After the previous night’s Homer Simpson moment at Swindon (D’OH!), Wolves had to win against the Rainmen, and they didn’t disappoint. Perhaps it was the shock of riding on a dry track for once, but several of the visitors seemed to offer little resistance to the Wolves, who had Sam back to his form of around ten years ago, along with an improvement from Chris (who had scored just two points at Rye House the same day).
Belle Vue won the toss and took the inside gates.
Heat 1 (re-run): Max, Bjerre, Schlein, Neath (f.rem), 56.19. 3-3, 3-3.
Mikael led off only for the race to be stopped for no apparent reason. The rerun saw Mikael lead again, with Chris going inside Schlein for third only for the Aussie to win the place back half a lap later. Chris tried the outside only to slide off on the last turn.
Heat 2: Neath, Skornicki, Robson, Jaros, 57.55. 5-1, 8-4.
Chris turned his night around by leading all the way, while Adam went around Jaros on the first lap for second.
Heat 3 (re-run): Ermolenko, Correy, Lindgren, Screen (fell), 57.39. 4-2, 12-6.
Another rerun was called after Sam moved off early – the riders had reached the back straight by the time the red lights came on! On the restart Freddie went wide on the first turn, while Screen fell ending the first lap. Freddie tried the inside line on Ronnie, but he held on for second behind Sam (1991 all over again!).
Heat 4: Crump, Skornicki, Howe, Robson, 57.49. 3-3, 15-9.
Crump predictably led all the way.
Heat 5: Ermolenko, Lindgren, Bjerre, Schlein, 57.25. 5-1, 20-10.
A maximum from the deadly duo, with Freddie resisting pressure from Bjerre throughout.
Heat 6: Crump, Max, Skornicki, Jaros, 56.88. 3-3, 23-13.
Some questioned why Crump was not nominated for double points in this one, but the Wolves tracked him for four laps to keep their 10-point lead.
Heat 7: Howe, Correy, Neath, Screen (double), 57.33. 4-2, 27-15.
Screen was nominated for double points, but the decision backfired superbly as Chris held him off for three laps, with Screen taking third starting the final tour. Coming up to the line Chris dived down the inside, with the referee eventually giving Chris the place to the surprise and delight of many. Cheers Joe!
Heat 8: Skornicki, Lindgren, Robson, Schlein, 58.14. 5-1, 32-16.
Adam led all the way (mmm donuts!) with Schlein running wide on turn one to let Freddie in for second. Belle Vue were then reduced to racing for the third place point. Surely we couldn’t throw a 16-point lead away……
Heat 9: Ermolenko, Crump (double), Lindgren, Robson, 57.46. 4-4, 36-20.
You’re reading that right! Sam gated and superbly held off Crump for four laps for one of his best wins of the season. Does this sound like a man about to retire to you?
Heat 10: Max, Screen, Correy, Neath, 57.22. 3-3, 39-23.
Mikael went around the outside of Screen to lead on the first lap.
Heat 11: Howe, Skornicki, Schlein, Bjerre, 58.20. 5-1, 44-24.
Adam produced a fine first lap to pass both Aces en route to second, while David led all the way. Surely the Wolves are safe now!
Heat 12 (re-run): Correy, Lindgren, Jaros (f.excl), Skornicki (f.excl), 58.07. 2-3, 46-27.
Take 1: Freddie leads the first lap before Jaros and Adam go for the same piece of track exiting turn four, resulting in a spectacular crash. Adam is excluded to the surprise of many.
Take 2: Into the first turn Jaros locks up on Freddie brining both down. Jaros is rightly excluded.
Take 3: Freddie makes a peach of a gate, but Ronnie takes him on turn two for a great comeback win.
Heat 13: Max, Bjerre, Crump, Howe, 57.81. 3-3, 49-30.
David put Crump wide on the first turn allowing Bjerre inside both. David held out Crump for a couple of laps (yes, really!) before the World Championship leader powered through.
Heat 14: Screen, Ermolenko, Neath, Robson, 58.08. 3-3, 52-33.
Just before this race Nigel Pearson commented that Sam was on a maximum, so the result was inevitable.
Heat 15: Crump, Max, Ermolenko, Correy, 58.33. 3-3, 55-36.
Crump led all the way, while Sam went around Ronnie (no, they weren’t team riding) o the first lap.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** Perfect.
Track conditions: ***** Perfect.
Attendance: ***** A stoat of a crowd.
Wolves Performance: ***** Excellent all round.
Entertainment value: ***** Home encounters with Belle Vue always offer superb racing, and tonight was no exception.
Man of the Match: It’s got to be Sam Ermolenko – please don’t retire yet Sam!
Referee (Graham Reeve): **** Not sure about Chris getting third in heat 7, and also heat 1 was called back for no reason.
Almost our first full house of fives!
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: **** Beat Crump in heat one, but failed to apologise for his pathetic performance at Swindon.
Fredrik Lindgren: **** Excellent racing with some fast gating.
Sam Ermolenko: ***** Beat Crump!
David Howe: **** Great racing, and holding Crump out in heat 13 was epic stuff!
Chris Neath: **** Much better form than of late.
Adam Skornicki: ***** Won’t be at reserve for long!
So, almost the perfect match from Wolves – let’s hope for more of the same this Wednesday at Kirky Lane, and also when the Beethens visit next week (on Wednesday remember, not Monday). Let’s hope the lads keep up their good form, and the rain keeps away from Manchester on Wednesday!
See you at the Green
Pieman.
PS: For those going on Wednesday, DON’T mention Swindon!
