Belle Vue 47 Wolves 46 Elite League 'B' 01/09/2004
Belle Vue Aces:
Ronnie Correy 0 1* 3 0 4+1
Rory Schlein 1 3 2 3 2* 11+1
Joe Screen 2* 2 3 m/f 2 2* 11+2
R/R 3 0 0 2 5
Jason Crump 1* 3 1 3 3 11+1
Jan Jaros 1 2* 0 0 3+1
Neil Collins 3 2 0 0 2 7
Parrys International Wolves:
Mikael Max 3 3 6 2 1 15
Freddie Lindgren 2* 1 2 X 2* 0 7+2
Sam Ermolenko F/X 0 1 3 3 7
R/R 1 1 X 3 5
David Howe 3 3 2 1* 9+1
Eric Carillo 0 1 0 1 2
Adam Skornicki 2 0 1* 1* 1 1 6+2
So, defending a 19 point lead, would the Wolves be able to take all 3 points at Kirky Lane?
Belle Vue won the toss and took gates 1 and 3
Ht 1 MAX, LINDGREN, Schlein, Correy ( 61.2) 1-5 1-5
From the gate, Mikael looks quick and wins by the length of the home straight
Ht 2 Collins, SKORNICKI, Jaros, CARILLO (60.5) 4-2 5-7
Aces gate, and Eric is forced wide on turn 2, falling but remounting, meanwhile Adam passes Jaros and sets off after Collins, only to lock-up on 4th bend of lap 3 when in a challenging position
Ht 3 Schlein, Screen, CARILLO, ERMOLENKO F/X (R/A) 5-1 10-8
First time out, Eric fell on 2nd bend, having been forced out by a combination of Sam and Screen........all 4 back.
In the re-run the Aces gate, but Sam brilliantly dives between them on the 4th bend of lap 1, and is pulling away until he loses it on 2nd bend, lap 3, resulting in him bringing Eric down again!
Ht 4 HOWE, Collins, Crump, SKORNICKI (61.0) 3-3 13-11
David made a great gate, and was leading the ginger whinger comfortably, when Crump decided to take a close look at the air-fence on the 2nd bend, third lap, allowing Collins into 2nd place, Adam off the pace in this one
Ht 5 MAX, Screen, LINDGREN, Collins (60.1) 2-4 15-15
Mikael gated, Freddie at the back, where, having tried just about every line there was, he found a way past Collins, coming off the final bend on the last lap.......good effort, we look up for this one tonight!
Ht 6 HOWE, Schlein, Correy, CARILLO (60.5) 3-3 18-18 David again looks good, and Eric held third for 2 laps, till the rocket passed him on turns 3/4 lap 2
Ht 7 Crump, Jaros, CARILLO, ERMOLENKO (61.0) 5-1 23-19
From the gate.........Sam fell and remounted on 1st/2nd bend lap 1
Ht 8 Schlein, LINDGREN, SKORNICKI, Collins (60.1) 3-3 26-22
Again, from the gate
Ht 9 Screen, HOWE, SKORNICKI, Jaros (61.1) 3-3 29-25
Joe and David away, Adam at the back and struggling for 3 laps till he suddenly closed fast on Jaros and dived underneath him exiting turn 4, lap 3
Ht 10 Correy, Schlein, ERMOLENKO, LINDGREN X (61.4) 5-1 34-26
First time of asking Freddie put the Rocket in the fence and was excluded. In the re-run the Aces gated with Sam at the back, but he made short work of Schlein and was all over Ronnie on the final bend when he over-cooked it and slid off
Ht 11 MAX (T/R), LINDGREN, Crump, Jaros (61.4) 1-8 35-34
Mikael in as a tactical ride off gate 4 (where David had been when he beat Crump!!!). Mikael flew out the gate and was joined by Freddie down the back straight. The ginger whinger was out the back for a full 3 laps before he passed his team-mate, but never got close to Freddie. The visiting supporters on the Grassy Knoll were now sensing a little more than the bonus point
Ht 12 ERMOLENKO, Collins, SKORNICKI, Screen (m-f) (61.9) 2-4 37-38
Adam in as a reserve replacement for Eric, and he and Sammo gated and were away as Screen had machine failure coming out of the 2nd bend. The 5-1 looked a formality, but somehow Collins managed to catch and pass Adam on the final lap. How important might this point turn out to be???
Ht 13 Crump, MAX, HOWE, Correy (60.7) 3-3 40-41
Crump gated as the Rocket hit the dirt on 2nd bend lap 1. Mikael was all over Crump all race without being able to pass and David was again not far behind.
Ht 14 ERMOLENKO, Screen, SKORNICKI, Collins (61.4) 2-4 42-45
Sammo gated but Adam didn't, however Collins fell on 2nd bend leaving Adam in 3rd. Screen was pretty close to Sam, who's choice of line made it impossible for Screen to pass. A good race between the 2 old boys and surely a great result???
The travelling fans gathered on the Grassy Knoll were split over how they thought Ht 15 would go. Some thinking Wolves had done enough, others fearing a repeat of Swindon. Surely Wolves would not concede a 5-1!!!!
Ht 15 Crump, Screen, MAX, LINDGREN (61.7) 5-1 47-46
No disrespect to Freddie but when he was first out the mood of the fans was suddenly very nervous. Crump duly gated and Screen went round the boards to join him for the only result that could cost the Wolves the meeting. Mikael tried hard for 2 laps but was never able to get close enough to the Aces
Without knowing who won the toss for Ht 15 2 questions come to mind - if we had won the toss how come we chose 1 and 3 when gate 1 had produced only 1 winner all night? And again, no disrespect to Freddie but why was David or Sam not in Ht 15 as David had ridden above my expectations and Sam seemed to get it right after a dodgy start?
Weather *****balmy late-summer evening
Track ***having had the stock cars there on Monday turns 1 and 2 caused all sorts of problems early on
Attendance ****seemed to be an above-average crowd with a good contingent of Wolves
Wolves performance ****great use of the tactical facility but why oh why did we not see Sam or David in Ht 15?
Entertainment value ****a good close meeting throughout even throwing up a little passing at the rear
Man of the match - was hoping to give it to Adam but found it really hard to choose between Mikael and David. Mikael had had an excellent night up until Ht 15, showing just what he is made of when doing his tactical ride against Crumpy, and even though David also showed Crump the quickest way round Kirky Lane Mikael's win was at a very important stage of the meeting, so my man of the match is MIKAEL MAX
Mikael *****on this my 4th visit to Kirky Lane this is far and away the best I have seen Mikael ride this track
Freddie ***would have been 4 stars but for fencing the Rocket in Ht 10. At that moment we were on a 4-2 but ultimately lost it 5-1. A big turning point perhaps???
Sam ***not vintage Sam but possibly should have been in Ht 15
David *****like Mikael, David exceeded my expectations tonight. His win over Crump in Ht 4 was superb, enough on it's own to earn him a Ht 15 ride
Eric **this kid has guts, was on the floor in his first 2 rides but showed plenty of effort for his 2 points
Adam ***paid 8 points is not a bad effort from reserve but not as aggressive as recent meetings and if only he had held onto 2nd place in Ht 12
So, to sum it up, another 2 points thrown away when the match was there for the taking. Freddie is an up and coming damn good rider, but at this moment in time I feel Ht 15 is just 1 step too far
