Daniel Nermark (3) (2) (2) (3) =(10)
David Howe 3 3 2* 2 1 =11+1

ASL Freight Panthers:

Henning Bager 0 1 1* 1 =3+1
Ales Dryml 1 0 2 1 =4
Lee Richardson 2 3 6 3 2 =16
Norbert Magosi 0 0 0 =0
Ricky Ashworth 1 0 3 1 0 0 =5
WALLOP! Those who predicted a big win for Wolves were for once correct! This was a superb all-round team performance, with many riders finding form when it was most needed. Adam Skornicki produced what was by far his best ever performance, Sam Ermolenko continued his incredible (last season?) form, and David Howe gave it his all in is quest for points, with all six Wolves making Peterborough look awful – Grand Prix riders Lukas and Ales Dryml made to look like Premier League also-rans on the night. The only downside was the injury to Freddie Lindgren in heat eight – best wishes for a speedy recovery Freddie.
Wolves took gates 1 and 3.
Heat 1: Max, Havelock, L. Dryml, Lindgren, 56.64. 3-3, 3-3.
Freddie took Dryml for third after half a lap, but the GP star swept back ahead on lap two…for his only point of the night.
Heat 2: Stead, Skornicki, Ashworth, Magosi, 58.98. 5-1, 8-4.
From the first turn.
Heat 3: Skornicki, Ermolenko, A. Dryml, Bager, 59.42. 5-1, 13-5.
From the gate, with Bager almost losing it at the end of lap one.
Heat 4: Howe, Richardson, Stead, Ashworth, 58.25. 4-2, 17-7.
Richardson gated but David rounded him to lead. Simon took until the end of lap two to take Ashworth, who was many people’s predicted spoiler for this one, but hadn’t threatened so far.
Heat 5: Havelock, Lindgren, Ermolenko, L. Dryml (double), 59.22. 3-3, 20-10.
Lukas was out for double points here, and there was concern as Peterborough gated. On turn four Freddie calmly bashed Dryml out wide to take second, and on the back straight next time around Sam went inside (also getting a tap in on the Czech!) for third. Make that a double zero then!
Heat 6 (re-run): Richardson, Max, Lindgren, Magosi, 57.97. 3-3, 23-13.
At the first attempt Richardson moved off early and the reds were out straight away. The rerun was a procession, despite Mikael trying hard around the inside.
Heat 7: Howe, Skornicki, Bager, A. Dryml, 58.67. 5-1, 28-14.
Dryml almost fell on the first lap, while Wolves cruised to the 5-1 and the 14-point lead needed for the bonus point was ours.
Heat 8 (re-run): Ashworth, Skornicki, Stead, L. Dryml (f.excl), Lindgren (f. inj), 59.63. 3-3, 31-17.
Dryml led but fell entering turn three at the fastest part of the track, with Freddie unable to avoid his machine. Both plunged into the fence, with Freddie sadly taken off in the ambulance and out of the meeting. Freddie’s injuries were confirmed as a badly bruised leg and a gashed chin – best wishes for a speedy recovery and a place in the playoff line-up Freddie! The rerun saw Adam in as a replacement, with Ashworth leading all the way to wreck Adam’s hopes of a first-ever maximum.
Heat 9 (re-run): Richardson (double), Skornicki, Ashworth, Ermolenko (f.excl), 59.01. 2-7, 33-24.
Sam went wide on the first turn gifting Richardson the lead, with Sam holding third behind Adam until inexplicably sliding off at the end of lap two, with Ashworth quickly laying down. Sam was excluded, and with Richardson leading all the way in the rerun, the bonus point suddenly looked unlikely.
Heat 10: Max, A. Dryml, Bager, Stead, 59.11. 3-3, 36-27.
From the gate, with Simon shut out from the start. With rain threatening, the heats were now being rushed through at a record pace.
Heat 11: Skornicki, Howe, Havelock, L. Dryml (ef), 59.54. 5-1, 41-28.
From the gate again (yes really!) with Dryml losing a chain after locking up on lap two.
Heat 12: Stead, Ermolenko, Bager, Magosi, 59.47. 5-1, 46-29.
A stunning race from both Simon and Sam to keep the visitors out from the first lap.
With 12 heats having been reached, an interval was now announced!
Heat 13: Richardson, Howe, Havelock, Max, 58.79. 2-4, 48-33.
Peterborough gated, but Mikael and Havelock made contact down the back straight allowing David around them into second. Mikael couldn’t catch Havelock and recorded a rare last place…OOPS!
Heat 14: Ermolenko, Skornicki, A. Dryml, Ashworth, 60.42. 5-1, 53-34.
What a race! Dryml led off but in two great moves Sam first went outside him, then Simon cut up the inside of him at the end of lap one. A superb 5-1 and all three points assured.
Heat 15: Max, Richardson, Howe, Ashworth, 59.83. 4-2, 57-36.
Bizarrely, Mikael was picked ahead of Sam for this one, while Trevor Swales’ nomination of Ashworth showed that Peterborough had run out of options – and riders! David led into the first turn, but then took Richardson wide and almost into the back straight fence, with Mikael going into the lead. David incredibly held out Richardson for two laps before the Panther came through on the inside. Awesome!
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: *** Quite cold, with rain threatening midway through.
Track conditions: ***** No problems at all.
Attendance: **** A large ferret of a crowd I think.
Wolves Performance: ***** Fantastic from all six team members.
Entertainment value: **** A couple of races were a bit processional.
Man of the Match: I really can’t decide on this one, so I’m going to be controversial and award it jointly to Adam Skornicki for his best ever performance in Britain (will this one ever be bettered?) and David Howefor some of the hardest riding we have ever seen from him.
Referee (Graham Flint): ***** Called back heat 6 correctly after Richardson moved at the tapes, and rightly excluded Dryml in heat 8.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: *** Last in heat 13, and appeared to lack some aggression.
Freddie Lindgren: **** Difficult to judge on only three rides, but his move on “double zero” Dryml in heat five was brilliant!
Sam Ermolenko: ***** Why he wasn’t in heat 15 is anyone’s guess.
David Howe: ***** One of his best performances in Wolves colours, only dropping points to Lee Richardson all night (and yet he still managed to bash him wide at one point!).
Adam Skornicki: ***** One word – BOSTIN’!!
Simon Stead: **** Some thought he looked slightly out of form, but he still scored paid nine!
So, a great night overall with three points in the bag and second in the table virtually assured. With Oxford also taking three points at Coventry, it looks like they will be the visitors next Monday as the playoffs get underway. Let’s hope that Freddie makes a quick recovery in time for when we reach the final!
See you at the Green (or at Brandon on Thursday if there is any truth in the rumour about this fixture!)
Pieman.
