I’m writing the report with a heavy heart and finding it difficult to look back at my program and remember the embarrassment. Obviously Poole were by far the better team and took a well deserved victory after superb team efforts in both legs of the final. I would have liked to come away with some pride from Poole last night but that was not to be. However, I do feel very proud of the way that our team has ridden throughout the season and I take great pleasure from the fact that we were contesting the Elite League Play-off Final when most so-called experts placed us in the bottom three league positions when asked back in March this year.
Having just looked at my programme I can see one good thing that has come out of last night’s meeting – I can copy and paste the description ‘from the tapes’ quite a lot of times in the heat by heat section below!!
You’ve all either seen the meeting or seen it on Sky but here are the painful details anyway. Poole won the toss and took gates 1 and 3 in heat 1.
Heat1. Pedersen, MAX. ADAM, Kasprzak. 3-3 / 52- 44
From the tapes. Pedersen made a great gate and looked very quick - Mikael looked out for Adam for a couple of laps and then chased after Pedersen and pushed him very hard in the last two laps.
Heat2. FREDDIE, Davidsson, Zetterstrom, MAGNUS. 3-3 / 6-6 / 55-47
Great start from Freddie - Davidsson leads around the first two bends but Freddie goes past down the back straight.
Heat3. Ferjan, Lindback, DAVID, ADAM(f/r/r). 5-1 / 11-7 / 60-48
David and Adam initially looked to have gated fairly well but both Poole riders pulled away up the back straight - both Wolves boys tried hard but Adam fell at the beginning of the 3rd lap and remounted.
Heat4. Sullivan, Zetterstrom, SAM, FREDDIE(e/f). 5-1 / 16-8 / 65-49
Freddie made a fantastic start and rode an intelligent first bend but then while leading easily he threw a primary chain on the approach to the finish line and was passed by all 3 riders. How unlucky can you be? It was very annoying to watch Sullivan celebrate a race win that he did not deserve.
Heat5. Lindback, Ferjan, MIKAEL (t/ride), ADAM. 5-2 / 21-10 / 70-51
From the tapes. Mikael was on a Tactical ride but was gated by the Poole pair and was unable to mount an effective attack despite being on their back wheels for the whole four laps. Slick dump!
Heat6. Pedersen, Kasprzak, SAM, MAGNUS. 5-1 / 26-11 / 75-52
Sam gated but was passed by both Poole riders up the back straight. Magnus was out of touch.
Heat7. Davidsson, FREDDIE(r/r), Sullivan, DAVID. 4-2 / 30-13 / 79-54
Again the Poole pair gated - David was trailing so Freddie wound it on until he caught and passed Sullivan on the back straight on lap 3. Superb.
Heat8. Kasprzak, FREDDIE(t/ride), Zetterstrom, ADAM. 4-4 / 34-17 / 83-58
From the gate. Freddie in as a tactical ride but can’t catch the fast gating Kasprzak.
Heat9. Lindback, SAM, Ferjan, MAGNUS. 4-2 / 38-19 / 87-60
Sam gets a good gate and tried to mix it up on the first bend showing plenty of determination. He manages to keep Ferjan behind him despite some hairy moments.
Heat10. Pedersen, FREDDIE(t/ride),Kasprzak, DAVID. 4-2 / 42-21 / 91 -62
Poole are league champions. Pedersen got past Freddie after a great gate from him. David looked poor again at the back but Freddie rode a good race.
Heat11. MIKAEL, Sullivan, ADAM, Davidsson. 2-4 / 44-25 / 93-66
From the tapes. Great start from Mikael - easy win. Adam a comfortable 3rd which gets Wolves first and only heat advantage!!
Heat12 re-run. Zetterstrom, Ferjan, DAVID, FREDDIE(f/x). 5-1 / 49-26 / 98-67
1st running - Freddie mixes it on 1st and 2nd bend but both Poole riders go past him and then Freddie lost it on the 3rd bend and was excluded. David doubled his points tally in the rerun!
Heat13. Pedersen, Sullivan, SAM, MIKAEL. 5-1 / 54-27 / 103-68
Mikael looks to have kept the from the gate but Pedersen eases under him and Sullivan passes him on the following lap - Sam throws himself into the mix - Mikael seems to be slowing and Sam takes over third place. Two passes!
Heat14. Davidsson, Lindback, FREDDIE, DAVID(r/r). 5-1 / 59-28 / 108-69
Lindback was at the back and David and Freddie were both challenging Davidsson. Lindback then made a sensational move to pass both Wolves riders going into 3rd bend 3rd lap to get another Poole 5-1.
Heat15. Sullivan, SAM, Lindback, MIKAEL. 4-2/ 63-30 / 112-71
Sullivan was an easy winner. Mikael and Sam seem to be in each other’s ways. Lindback moved into third but Sam held second place well.
Weather: *** Cool, autumnal and no sign of the rain we needed to mess up the track a bit.
Track conditions: * Smooth as a baby’s bum
Attendance: **** Fair sized crowd - although somehow lacking in enthusiasm
Wolves Performance: * Bordering on embarrassingly pathetic (sorry!)
Entertainment value: * A boring meeting partly due to Wolves poor gating and partly to track conditions
Man of the Match: No doubt whatsoever – Freddie Lindgren
Referee: **** No decisions to make (although he should have curtailed the trophy presentation to the crowd until after the racing had finished)
Five Star Ratings:
Mikael Max: ** Started reasonably but faded badly
Adam Skornicki: * Very lethargic
David Howe: * Underpowered and unable to find a decent line
Sam Ermolenko: *** Scraped 3 stars because it was his last league appearance
Magnus Karlsson: * Not at the races unfortunately
Fredrik Lindgren: **** By far the best Wolves rider on the night. Should have had three more points when his engine failed 30 metres from the finish. Terrific effort which will secure a 2005 future.
There’s no way that the team were not trying. I am sure they were up for the meeting but after heats 3 and 4 the heads went down and there was no way back. It was such a great shame to end an incredibly successful league campaign with such a whimper. Wolves Speedway team is far, far better than what was displayed last night and everybody who knows speedway knows that!
So let’s forget that disastrous meeting and leave Poole to celebrate a well-earned victory and an impressive second league title on the bounce.
Of course we are all wondering what is happening about Sam. I hear that he really is bringing the curtain down on his superb speedway racing career but I hope that we have not seen the last of him at Monmore Green because he surely has a tremendous mount to offer to our club. He will be riding in the Ladbroke Olympique on 25th October and I guess he will put us all in the picture and make his farewells if that is appropriate. I hear that he has a big farewell event lined up next season on 1st May so don’t miss Sam’s Super Sunday.
Wolves Speedway will be back next year and will hopefully once again be a force in the 2005 league, but whatever happens I still am, and always will be…………….
