The final event of the 2004 speedway season at Monmore was another cracking Ladbroke Olympique, with the line-up including several new faces and welcome returnees. Peter Karlsson performed as well as everyone expected on his return to the Green, and was only robbed of a run-off for the title by mechanical problems. But what a result for David Howe! After what he admits was not his best season ever, this was a massive morale-boosting win for the England international.
The only change to the line-up was due to the absence of Magnus Karlsson, who was helping Hull to a win at Reading. His place was taken by former Polish Under-21 champ Karol Malecha, better known as Adam Skornicki’s mechanic Karlos!
Numbers in brackets indicate handicaps.
Heat 1: Ermolenko (0), Karlsson (0), Neath (0), Harmatiuk (0), 57.89.
Sam – in what could be his last meeting as a full-time rider – held off PK all the way.
Heat 2: Lindgren (0), Gjedde (0), Rokeberg (0), Ashworth (0), 58.31.
From the gate.
Heat 3: Howe (0), Max (0), Nicholls (0), Tornqvist (0), 57.35.
David all the way, inflicting a surprise early defeat on Mikael.
Heat 4: Jensen (0), Skornicki (0), Larsen (0), Malecha (0), 58.09.
Jesper went from third to first in the early laps.
Heat 5: Nicholls (10), Ermolenko (20), Skornicki (15), Rokeberg (10), 58.28.
A ragged start saw Sam quickly into third, and he took second on lap two.
Heat 6: Karlsson (15), Howe (20), Gjedde (15), Larsen (10), 58.67.
PK went round Larsen to lead, with David stuck at the back until the last turn, when he pulled off one of the moves of the season to carve inside both Charlie and Larsen for second. It looked as though all three were heading for the fence, but somehow they all got round to finish. If one ride won the meeting for David, this was it!
Heat 7: Max (15), Lindgren (20), Malecha (0), Harmatiuk (f.rem) (0), 58.57.
Mikael went from third to first into turn three for the first time, just before Shaun slid off on turn four, remounting to finish.
Heat 8: Ashworth (0), Neath (10), Jensen (20), Tornqvist (0), 59.06.
Chris took newcomer Tornqvist for second on lap two, with Jesper following but unable to progress further.
Heat 9: Gjedde (10), Jensen (10), Max (20), Ermolenko (f.rem) (15), 59.64.
Sam took two laps to find a way past Jesper as Charlie led, but Jesper soon got Sam back, with the latter falling on lap three.
Heat 10: Karlsson (20), Tornqvist (0), Rokeberg (0), Malecha (10), 59.29.
Looking at the line-up for this one, it was surely going to be a fight for second. It took PK just one and a half laps to hit the front – will he return to British Speedway next year?
Heat 11: Larsen (0), Nicholls (20), Ashworth (20) Harmatiuk (0), 59.15.
Larsen all the way. Shaun showed again that he hasn’t quite mastered turn three by shooting straight on, clipping the fence an just staying on.
Heat 12 (re-run): Howe (15), Skornicki (10), Lindgren (15), Neath (10), 58.61.
The all-Wolves heat was red-flagged due to an unsatisfactory start, with the rerun seeing David take Adam round the outside for the win.
Heat 13: Ermolenko (0), Lindgren (10), Larsen (20), Tornqvist (15), 58.52.
From the first turn.
Heat 14 (re-run): Max (10), Karlsson (20), Skornicki (15), Ashworth (10), 58.10.
The race was stopped due to PK moving off early, with the rerun seeing PK and Adam both go inside Ashworth.
Heat 15: Jensen (15), Howe (20), Rokeberg (10), Harmatiuk (0), 58.95.
Shaun led the first lap only for Jesper to cut through to lead starting lap two. Shaun dropped to the back once again, although he did look slightly better in this one.
Heat 16: Neath (0), Nicholls (15), Gjedde (20), Malecha (0), 59.08.
Chris all the way, chased by Karlos until he fell away. Nicholls couldn’t quite catch Chris at the front.
Heat 17: Howe (15), Ashworth (0), Ermolenko (20), Malecha (0), 58.79.
David made up his handicap by half-distance, and took over in front down the back straight, with Karlos losing out to Sam at the same time.
Heat 18: Nicholls (15), Karlsson (15), Lindgren (15), Jensen (20), 59.59.
With David having finished with 13 points, PK had to win this one to set up a run-off. He took Nicholls for the lead on the first turn, with Freddie just failing to follow suit. A race-off seemed likely until the last turn when PK’s bike suddenly slowed, sadly allowing Nicholls through and handing David the Olympique title.
Heat 19: Gjedde (10), Skornicki (10), Tornqvist (0), Harmatiuk (f.rem), 59.15.
Shaun stayed close to the fast-starting Charlie early on before Adam slipped through. On lap three Shaun slipped off on turn three once again, while Charlie sped to victory. Adam treated us to a final donut of the season, almost sending Porky flying as he circled him!
Heat 20: Larsen (10), Neath (20), Max (20), Rokeberg (10), 59.42.
The final Wolverhampton Speedway heat of 2004 saw Larsen head Mikael all the way, while Chris very impressively chased down the Wolves number one, stealing second on the line. Did Mikael let him through? We will never know!
The meeting closed with the trophy presentation to the top three, and of course the firework display.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: **** No sign of rain, and who cares about the cold?
Track conditions: ** As bald as a badger’s backside (cheers Wolfgang for that one!).
Attendance: **** The proverbial stoat.
Entertainment value: ***** Not as good as the playoff semi! (sorry, but I’ll be saying that for ever!). This meeting saw the usual quantity of good racing thanks to the handicapping system.
Man of the Meeting: It’s got to be David Howe.
Referee (Graham Reeve): **** Amazingly, no decisions to make, buts gets a star knocked off for telling PK off for rolling at the start!
Rider ratings:
Sam Ermolenko: **** Was this the Legend’s last?
Peter Karlsson: ***** Victim of bad luck, as so often before.
Shaun Harmatiuk: ** Needs another year to learn the track (well, turns three and four anyway!).
Chris Neath: **** Much improved on his recent form.
Marius Rokeberg: *** A decent debut on British shores.
Charlie Gjedde: **** Looked fast all night.
Fredrik Lindgren: **** Plus a trophy!
Ricky Ashworth: *** Well on the pace throughout.
Scott Nicholls: **** Put up his usual good Monmore performance.
David Howe: ***** Simply superb.
Mikael Max: **** Plus a contract for next year……please?
Robin Tornqvist: *** Not bad for a virtual unknown.
Adam Skornicki: *** Only Wolves asset not to win a heat.
Josh Larsen: **** Fast out of the traps all night.
Karol Malecha: ** I’ll let Kate debate this one! ;D
Jesper B. Jensen: **** Will he be back in 2005?
So, that’s it for an entertaining and controversial Wolves 2004 season. We had great racing, excitement, disappointment, anger……but most importantly, a great time every Monday at the Green! Thanks to everyone at the club and on this forum for making 2004 such a great year. Roll on 2005 – let the rumours begin!
See you in 2005
