Fredrik Lindgren 2* 3 R 2 0 =7+1
Steve Johnston 3 1 2 X =6
David Howe 0 3 2 0 =5
Magnus Karlsson 3 0 1* 1 =5+1
Krzysztof Pecyna 0 2 2 0 =4
FoneStyle UK Aces:
Joe Screen 3 2 0 2* =7+1
Jason Lyons 0 0 3 3 =6
Kenneth Bjerre R 2 3 3 1 =9
Simon Stead 1 1* 0 3 =5+1
Jason Crump 3 3 3 3 3 =15
Andy Smith 2 0 1 1 2* =6+1
Steve Masters 1* 1 0 =2+1
Good meeting, wrong result. This was certainly below what several Wolves fans expected, with the side unable to find consistency for much of the night. While Freddie was desperately unlucky in heat nine with an engine failure (while beating Crump!), Mikael and David looked very out of sorts in several rides. Krys gated several times but then went backwards, while Magnus showed some form to steal important points from reserve, including holding off Screen in heat eleven.
Wolves won the toss and took the inside gates.
Heat 1: Screen, Max, Correy, Lyons, 58.89. 3-3, 3-3.
Lyons moved at the tapes, but Screen had gated so the referee let it go (cynical, me?). A slip at half distance let Mikael close in, but last bend move failed.
Heat 2: Karlsson, Smith, Masters, Pecyna, 59.88. 3-3, 6-6.
Wolves gated and held on for two laps until Spud went inside Krys, with the Pole then running wide allowing Lionel inside him for the third place.
Heat 3: Johnston, Lindgren, Stead, Bjerre (ret), 59.17. 5-1, 11-7.
Bjerre cleared off into the lead until his engine blew on lap three, handing Wolves a lucky first heat advantage of the night.
Heat 4: Crump, Pecyna, Masters, Howe, 58.56. 2-4, 13-11.
Crump went under the Wolves on turn two to lead, with a slip for David on lap two handing Masters third.
Heat 5: Lindgren, Screen, Johnston, Lyons, 58.68. 4-2, 17-13.
Freddie took Screen on the first lap for the lead, while Johno chased hard, but a last bend lunge failed.
Heat 6: Crump, Max, Correy, Smith, 57.62. 3-3, 20-16.
From the gate, as expected.
Heat 7 (re-run): Howe, Bjerre, Stead, Karlsson, 58.21. 3-3, 23-19.
The tapes were held for a long time, with the resulting ragged start meaning a re-run. David went round Bjerre to lead, and just held him off for a good win.
After this one it was announced that Screen had suffered pulled shoulder muscles but would continue riding, and also that several riders had complained about the slippery nature of the turns.
Heat 8: Lyons, Pecyna, Correy, Masters, 58.80. 3-3, 26-22.
Krys gated and led again as Ronnie took Masters on the back straight for third. Lyons and Ronnie closed in on Krys in the closing stages, with all three crossing the line together ending an excellent race. The Sky TV dead heat camera showed Lyons to be the winner by inches.
Heat 9: Crump, Johnston, Smith, Lindgren (ret), 58.64. 2-4, 28-26.
The unthinkable almost happened as Freddie made a peach of a gate from the outside and led Crump for three laps until his chain disintegrated, sending one of the youngster’s biggest heat wins in Britain spinning down the pan.
Heat 10: Bjerre, Max, Correy, Stead, 58.36. 3-3, 31-29.
Ronnie gated, but Bjerre went around both Wolves on turn two for the lead.
Heat 11: Lyons, Howe, Karlsson, Screen, 58.81. 3-3, 34-32.
Magnus was the early leader until Lyons made his move on turn four, with David also getting through to second. Magnus unexpectedly held off Screen for third.
Heat 12: Bjerre, Lindgren, Smith, Pecyna, 58.79. 2-4, 36-36.
Krys gated (again!) but fell to the rear over the last two laps.
Heat 13: Crump, Screen, Max, Howe, 58.34. 1-5, 37-41.
As so many had predicted, this was where Wolves lost out in this match. David ran wide on turn two and fell away, while Mikael also looked slow as Belle Vue sped to the 5-1. Mikael did try a last bend run, but Screen just got there for second.
Heat 14 (re-run): Stead, Masters, Karlsson, Johnston (exc), 59.24. 1-5, 38-46.
Wolves gated, but Johno and Spud made contact on turn two, resulting in the latter piling into the fence. A tricky call for the referee, but he excluded Johno after watching the replays. Whether his decision would have been different if Sky had not been present is a matter for debate. The re-run saw Magnus stick to the inside line even though all the grip was now on the outside, leaving Belle Vue for the 5-1.
Heat 15: Crump, Max, Bjerre, Lindgren, 59.03. 2-4, 40-50.
Mikael led briefly only for Crump to quickly take over, with Bjerre also momentarily getting ahead of the Wolves number one.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** Unusually fine for a Bank Holiday.
Track conditions: *** Slick on the turns, but fast times were recorded.
Attendance: ***** A Bank Holiday Badger of a crowd, including some very vocal Belle Vue supporters!
Entertainment value: ***** Good racing, but the wrong result.
Man of the Match: Only one rider was truly fast and consistent throughout the meeting, and that was Fredrik Lindgren (and he almost beat Crump!).
Referee (Graham Flint): **** The Johno-Spud incident was almost impossible to decide.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: ** Looked uncharacteristically slow.
Ronnie Correy: *** Mr Consistent.
Fredrik Lindgren: **** Almost beat Crump!
Steve Johnston: *** Unfortunate in Heat 14.
David Howe: ** All over the place for much of the night.
Magnus Karlsson: *** Learning fast.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Good gating, but not enough speed.
A West Bromwich Albion-style performance then (as in losing out late on), but as the old saying goes, things can only get better! Swindon on Thursday is the next obstacle, so can the boys pull off a surprise win?
Once a Wolf, always a Wolf
