Hands up if you expected Wolves to do this well in this match. Thought so! I for one certainly expected a heavy defeat, but was very pleasantly surprised. This was a truly fighting performance from the Wolves, pulling back level after a mid-match slump. If only our middle order had been fired up right from the start, things may have been different, but Wolves really had no answer to the sheer speed of Adams, Gjedde and Richardson. The fact that three Wolves were in action at Poole the previous evening in Magnus Zetterstrom’s testimonial may not have helped their preparation, but our reserves showed great improvement to produce a balanced performance.
After the riders had entered to the strains of “Red Red Robin” (“When the red red robin comes bob-bob-bobbin’ along”…… !), Wolves won the toss and took gates one and three.
Heat 1: Adams, Max, Correy, Alden, 64.68. 3-3, 3-3.
Mikael made a great first turn only for Adams to sweep round him and go on for his usual win. The track looked worryingly grippy on turn one, with riders unable to slide their bikes and having to ride longtrack-style through the first and second bends.
Heat 2: Pecyna, Karlsson, Allen, Tresarrieu (f.rem), 69.39. 1-5, 4-8.
Wolves gated and led all the way, with Tresarrieu spinning off at the end of lap one.
Heat 3: Gjedde, Davidsson, Johnston, Lindgren, 66.08. 5-1, 9-9.
Swindon all the way, with Freddie looking slow at the back.
Heat 4: Richardson, Howe, Pecyna, Allen, 66.71. 3-3, 12-12.
David made a good start, but Richardson battled inside him to force his way through by the end of the first lap. Krys stayed ahead of Allen throughout further back.
Heat 5: Gjedde, Max, Correy, Davidsson, 66.37. 3-3, 15-15.
After a delay due to Davidsson’s machine failing on the line (he switched to another with 15 seconds remaining!), Gjedde again led all the way despite a lock-up on the second lap.
Heat 6: Adams, Karlsson, Howe, Alden, 66.11. 3-3, 18-18.
From the gate, save for a slow-starting David taking Alden for third at the end of lap one.
Heat 7: Richardson, Johnston, Tresarrieu, Lindgren, 66.80. 4-2, 22-20.
Johno took the outside line on the Swindon pair on turn two to take second, with Freddie again last despite chasing Tresarrieu hard, and the deadlock was broken at last.
Heat 8: Alden, Pecyna, Correy, Allen, 68.80. 3-3, 25-23.
Krys made another good start only to be rounded by Alden, while Ronnie held off Allen all the way.
Heat 9: Gjedde, Karlsson, Davidsson, Howe, 67.20. 4-2, 29-25.
Wolves gated once again, but Gjedde soon carved through for another win. David then spun off starting the last lap while in third.
Heat 10: Adams, Lindgren, Alden, Johnston, 66.68. 42, 33-27.
Adams predictably led all the way, while Freddie brightened slightly by taking Alden for second on the back straight. Johno was stuck at the back, and the Wolves slipped back slightly.
Heat 11: Max, Richardson, Correy, Allen, 66.74. 2-4, 35-31.
Mikael made a quality first turn to round Richardson for the lead and the win, while Ronnie’s sequence of third places continued.
Heat 12: Lindgren, Karlsson, Tresarrieu, Davidsson, 68.58. 1-5, 36-36.
The Wolves pair made a great start and led all the way to level the score once again, with Magnus holding out Tresarrieu well.
Heat 13 (re-run): Richardson, Max, Karlsson, Adams (f.exc), 67.80. 3-3, 39-39.
A frantic first lap saw Swindon gate only for Mikael to go inside Adams at the same time as Magnus (replacing the struggling David) went outside the Aussie! Adams fought back only to fall on turn four, earning a rare exclusion and throwing Wolves a lifeline. Mikael tried hard in the rerun, but this time Richardson held him off.
Heat 14: Gjedde, Johnston, Tresarrieu, Pecyna, 67.68. 4-2, 43-41.
From the gate, leaving Wolves needing a 5-1 in the last heat to win.
Heat 15: Gjedde, Adams, Max, Karlsson, 67.08. 5-1, 48-42.
The declared Wolves line-up for this one was Mikael and Freddie, but after a protest Freddie was found ineligible, as he was not one of the top three scorers nor is he in the team’s top three averages (It is rare for Peter Adams to get his rules wrong, especially as this rule is printed in the Wolves programme every week.). Magnus replaced him, but whatever the line-up there was little chance of anything but a 5-1 to Swindon, and they duly obliged.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: * Freezing cold (as it always seems to be at Swindon!), and it also spat with rain later on.
Track conditions: ** Very grippy to start with, but improved later on.
Attendance: **** A middle-aged ferret of a crowd.
Wolves’ performance: **** The team tried very hard, not once giving up.
Entertainment value: **** An enjoyable meeting, especially when the track improved.
Man of the Match: For one of his best contributions so far, it goes to Magnus Karlsson.
Referee (Ronnie Allan): ***** An unusually quiet meeting for Mr Allan, with no decisions to make.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: **** Much improved on Monday.
Ronnie Correy: *** Mr Consistent once again.
Fredrik Lindgren: *** OK once he got going.
Steve Johnston: *** Did his job.
David Howe: ** Struggling a bit in recent meetings.
Magnus Karlsson: **** Probably tried the hardest of all.
Krzysztof Pecyna: **** Not bad for someone who had probably never see the track before!
Despite the lack of noise from the reduced turnout of Wolves fans (I tried, honest – I just need a bigger voice!), this meeting was enjoyable and a big confidence booster for the team ahead of the important Cup matches against Ipswich next week.
