^=Tactical Ride, double points.
Wolves win 99-81 on aggregate.
No, this is not a late April Fool – Wolves really did win by 26 points! This was the performance of the year so far, with all seven Wolves trying their hardest – including David, who rode hard for poor reward. Freddie finally completed a well-deserved first paid maximum, while Krys took a shock win over Lee Richardson in heat four. In between, the racing was first class in almost every heat.
There were doubts about whether the match would go ahead until around 6.30pm, with rain showers hovering around Wolverhampton, but thankfully these had receded by start time leaving the track in good condition.
Swindon won the toss and took gates one and three.
Heat 1: Max, Adams, Correy, Alden, 57.42. 4-2, 4-2.
The meeting got off to the best possible start, with Mikael taking Adams for the lead down the back straight, and holding on all the way for a good win.
Heat 2: Pecyna, Karlsson, Tresarrieu, Allen, 59.79. 5-1, 9-3.
Krys made a fast gate to take another heat two win, with Magnus backing him up all the way.
Heat 3: Lindgren, Johnston, Gjedde, Davidsson, 58.63. 5-1, 14-4.
Johno went inside both visitors at turn two for second behind Freddie, taking Charlie wide on turn four to keep the place. Charlie closed in on Johno, but the 5-1 was secure.
Heat 4: Pecyna, Richardson, Howe, Allen, 59.53. 4-2, 18-6.
A few Wolves fans bravely predicted a 4-2 in this one, but certainly not in this order! Krys made a lightning start and led all the way, while David tried to repeat Johno’s move on turn two, almost succeeding only for Richardson to power back inside him down the home straight. Krys held on for a totally unexpected win.
Heat 5: Lindgren, Johnston, Adams (double), Alden, 58.61. 5-2, 23-8.
I promise you, I’m not making this up! With Swindon twelve behind, it was obvious Adams would be on a double, but both Wolves outgated him, and co-operated well throughout the race to hold out the GP star for THE freak result of the season!
Heat 6: Richardson, Max, Correy, Tresarrieu, 59.20. 3-3, 26-11.
Swindon gated for the first time, but both home riders cut past Tresarrieu on the back straight and then team-rode (yes!) but Richardson was away and clear.
Heat 7: Karlsson, Howe, Gjedde, Davidsson, 59.25. 5-1, 31-12.
Wolves all the way once again, with Charlie trying everything to stay on level terms.
Heat 8: Correy, Tresarrieu, Pecyna, Alden, 59.26. 4-2, 35-14.
A classic speedway race, with Ronnie and Tresarrieu staying side by side virtually all the way. Ronnie finally just got in front on the final lap, while Krys chased them home in third and the bonus point was virtually assured.
Heat 9 (re-run): Johnston, Lindgren, Tressarieu, Richardson (double)(fell exc), 59.76. 5-1, 40-15.
Richardson was given the black and white helmet, but was bundled off on the first turn, then staying on the track. The race was stopped, and Richardson was surprisingly excluded, wasting a tactical ride for Swindon. Wolves led all the way in the rerun, with Tresarrieu trying hard until blocked by Johno.
Heat 10: Max, Correy, Davidsson, Gjedde (f, rem, ret), 58.57. 5-1, 45-16.
Mikael rounded the faster starting Charlie on turn two, with Ronnie going inside him for second on lap two. Charlie fought back well only to lift spectacularly on the back straight and fall. He gamely remounted and tried to finish, but Wolves were away for another 5-1 to seal the match. Credit to the Wolves fans as well for their encouraging Charlie for his hard efforts after the race.
Heat 11: Adams, Alden, Howe, Karlsson, 58.49. 1-5, 46-21.
Well, you have to be on the receiving end sometimes! Swindon led from the start, with David trying everything to catch Alden but the Swedish youngster was clear.
Heat 12 (re-run): Lindgren, Davidsson, Pecyna (ret), Tresarrieu (f.exc), 58.79. 3-2, 49-23.
Tresarrieu spun off on the first turn, with no visible contact, and then stayed on the track as the red light came on. He was excluded for his pains, and the rerun saw Wolves gate and lead until Krys suffered an engine failure. Even though it was the first lap Krys still pushed his bike down the home straight until lapped! Freddie stayed ahead of Davidsson to remain unbeaten.
Heat 13 (awarded): Adams, Max, Richardson, Howe (f.exc). 2-4, 51-27.
Adams rounded Mikael to lead, with David and Richardson scrapping for third. Going into the last lap David was in front, but Richardson drove hard underneath him sending David flying. The reds came out and, somewhat bizarrely, David was excluded. He soon showed his displeasure by ignoring the concerned first aid staff, leaping the safety fence and sprinting towards Richardson’s pit, though fortunately there was no trouble. The heat was awarded with Richardson third, and once again we had lost out in Heat 13.
Heat 14: Gjedde, Karlsson, Johnston, Allen (fell), 59.43. 3-3, 54-30.
Allen fell on turn two but made it to the centre, while Gjedde rounded Magnus for the lead on turn three, going on for the win.
Heat 15: Adams, Max, Johnston, Richardson, 58.13. 3-3, 57-33.
Wolves fans were celebrating even before the start of this one, as the fact that Freddie was not nominated meant that he had secured his first maximum. Richardson got the predictable greeting when he arrived on track, but remained last as Adams beat off Mikael and Johno for the win.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ** Drizzled almost throughout.
Track conditions: ***** Almost perfect after the earlier rain – shows what needs to be done before meetings.
Attendance: *** A ferret.
Wolves performance: ***** Brilliant.
Entertainment value: ***** Fantastic racing, especially in heat 8.
Man of the Match: Krys and Johno cam very, very close, but you can’t really ignore a first maximum, can you? Yes, it’s Fredrik Lindgren.
Referee (Robbie Perks): *** Stuck to the “exclude the rider who falls” policy, which only works 90% of the time.
Rider Ratings:
Mikael Max: **** Looked much faster than in recent weeks.
Ronnie Correy: **** Battled hard all night.
Fredrik Lindgren: ***** Fantastic!
Steve Johnston: ***** The “team” man of the night.
David Howe: **** Did not get the points his effort deserved.
Magnus Karlsson: **** Continued to pile up the points from reserve.
Krzysztof Pecyna: ***** Easily his best British meeting so far – no longer will fans in the UK say “Krzysztof who?”
I could find very little fault with this performance, so let’s hope it carries on to Poole on Wednesday night! Remember, Swindon were the side that put the Pirates out of this year’s KO Cup……
