So the usual Bank Holiday heavy showers forcast for the afternoon gave Monmore a wide berth but the thunder that was also forcast arrived to give us a night to remember.
The evening started with Jacqui,Gemma and Christine presenting Freddie with a cheque from our dear selves for £500 and Freddie in return giving Christine a signed photo and a big kiss(I dont know which embarrased her the most). A thank you must go to CVS and the management team for publicising this presentation in the programme with a good write up.
So with all the talk on the terraces of why and how Mikael and Magnus had failed to arrive, the mood seemed sombre as how could we possibly make a good meeting of it with 2 top riders missing and our limited choice of guests.
HEAT 1..Norris,CORREY,Moore,HARGREAVES..2-4 55.62
Norris gated off the inside with Jack Hargreaves almost alongside. Ronnie moved into second and then on turn 4 bulked Jack to allow Moore through togive Eastie a early advantage.
Norris' time was a new track record. He did win the heat comfortably but it is hard to believe this heat was 2 seconds quicker than anything else we would see all night. Congratulations to David Norris.
HEAT 2..Watt,Jensen,Atkin,Pecyna....1-5..3-9...57.44
Krysztof made his usual flying start but with Watt in persuit he drifted wide on the final bend of lap 1 allowing Watt through.Further mistakes let jensen past on lap 3 and then at the start of lap 4 Atkin also passed a very unhappy looking Pole.
6 down after 2 heats surely this was going to be a massacre.
HEAT 3..LINDGREN,JOHNSTON,Shields,Barker...5-1..8-10..57.17
Freddie flies from gate 4 but entering the first turn Jonno is last. Entering the back straight Jonno finds a line up the inside and dives under the 2 visitors and although Shields tries valiantly Jonno secures second. Barker looks totally uninterested and gives up on the final back straight. the wolves fight back.
HEAT 4..Pedersen,Watt,HOWE,PECYNA...1-5..9-15..57.53
From gate 2 Kryz drifts wide on the first bend and almost takes david out allowing the Eagles to race away down the back straight. David makes up ground on Watt and with a last lap inside challenge almost gets David an extra point.
HEAT 5 ..Norris,JOHNSTON,LINDGREN,Moore..3-3..12-18..57.58
Norris again gates but another back straight swoop by Jonno takes him into the lead, Norris though cuts under our skipper out of turn 4 and pulls away. freddie is content to tuck in for 3rd and keep a battling Moore at the back.
HEAT 6.. Pedersen,CORREY,Jensen,HARGREAVES f/x..2-4--14-22
Pedersen gates but jack makes another great start and is holding a very comfortable 2nd with Ronnie keeping his distance to shepherd the young Wolf home. exiting turn 2 for the final time jack lifts and although he manages to get the bike down the fence is looming. Jack hits the fence but his bike bounces across the track narrowly missing Ronnie, jensen is not so fortunate though and hits Jack's bike full on sending him flying through the air. Both riders lie motionless on the track but after a while both are up and make it back to the pits under their own steam. Jensen has an injured right leg and jack has damaged his right Knee which under doctors advice makes jack withdraw from the meeting.
HEAT 7..LINDGREN,HOWE,Shields,Barker..8-1..22-23..57.47.
With the wolves 8 down, Pete Adams uses the golden doube facility to put Freddie back 15 m in place of Atkin. David gates and is chased by Shields who forces his way past David on lap 2 David is soon back under the Aussie though as Freddie begins his charge around Barker on the 3rd lap. Entering lap 4 freddie makes an outside charge on Shields and takes second spot down the back straight with David looking left and right to try and see what is happening. David rides a wide final corner but with Freddie also out wide and Shields still threatening a maximum looks out of the question. However Freddie keeps it wound on against the fence and david just manages to slow enough to let the Swede win by about half a wheel.
A fantastic effort from the 2 Wolves who quite rightly get a standing ovation on their victory lap.
HEAT 8..CORREY,Moore,Watt,PECYNA..3-3..25-26
Ronnie is away from gate 3 but Krys again struggles to negotiate turn 1 from the inside gate and is tailed off. Moore chases Ronnie all the way but the 'Rocket' is never seriously threatened.
HEAT 9..Pedersen,LINDGREN,JOHNSTON,Jensen..3-3..28-29..57.11
Jensen misses the gate but the other 3 enter the first turn level.Jonno appears to try and ease Pedersen out who in turn gives Freddie a big elbow as well as flicking his back wheel out. Both Pedersen and Freddie go down with the Wolves man ending up on the dog track. Freddie jumps back onto the track to 'talk' to Pedersen. All of a sudden bodies appear from all over and a mass brawl ensues on the dog track.
I will not comment any further as I have no clear facts and I am sure in due course statements will be made etc about these unbelievable scenes which didnt seem to involve any riders who seemed to be trying to diffuse the situation.
Refs decision all 4 back.
Pedersen gates but Freddie chases all the way and on the final turn dives under the Eagle who keeps it wound on and wins by a bike length making totally unnessesary gestures as he crosses the line.
HEAT 10..Watt,CORREY,Shields,ATKIN..2-4..30-33 ..57.11
Watt gates but at the end of lap 1 Ronnie squeezes up the inside only for watt to retake the lead on lap 2. Shields briefly rounds Ronnie but the 'Rocket' holds his line and takes second place.
HEAT 11..HOWE,Norris,Moore,PECYNA..3-3..33-36..57.84
Norris again gates but David chases hard trying both inside and outside lines . On lap 4 Norris makes a slight mistake and moves out slightly and David siezes the oppotunity and dives under the shocked Norris to share the heat. Krys is a distant 4th.
Heat 12..PECYNA,LINDGREN,Barker,Watt..5-1..38-37..57.73.
The Wolves take the lead..
Krys gates and this time rides a good first lap. Freddie is tucked in behind and does an excellent job of guessing watt's line much to his annoyance with more hand gestures as he tails off last. Freddie follows Krys alll the way as the Pole looks completely transformed from the rider we have seen so far this evening.
HEAT 13..Pedersen,HOWE,Norris,ATKIN..2-4..40-41..57.28
Pedersen again with a tapes to flag victory but behind the 2 brits have a great battle with Norris leading only to be passed on the inside on turn 4 on lap 2. Norris fights back and retakes David on the next turn. david will not be out done though and ending lap 3 he again cuts under Norris and this time pulls away to secure a vital second spot.
HEAT 14..JOHNSTOn,Shields,Watt,PECYNA..3-3..43-44..58.07
Jonno again misses the gate but makes a 'long, back straight to fly from 4th to 1st. Watt is at the back but on lap 2 follows Jonno's line to dive past Krys and ensure the points are shared.
HEAt 15.. Pedersen,HOWE,LINDGREN,Norris..3-3..46-47..57.55
Another comfortable win for the Dane. Norris lifts exiting turn 2 on the opening lap and is out of contention. Freddie runs very wide on turns 3 and 4 which puts him adrift of David who is second but never likely challenge for the lead.
A tremendous effort from ALL the boys who defied all our expectations and took a full strength Eastboune team to a last heat decider.
Five Star Ratings
Weather **** A dry warm evening
Track Conditions **** Seemed heavy for a few heats but considering another dodgy forcast stood up and produced many racing lines.
Attendance **** A good healthy stoat.
Wolves Performance ***** no one can be faulted for their efforts.
Entertainment ***** with meetings like this who needs GP's
Referee Chris Durno *** Only 1 decision tomake and in my opinion he bottled it and took the easy option
Man of the Match Freddie? David? Ronnie? Jonno? all have a very strong case but for all his efforts in a s eason which so far has been far from easy, my man of the match award goes to DAVID HOWE.
STAR RATINGS
Jack Hargreaves ***** Gated with the best and was looking comfortable for a second spot before lifting. Hold your head high Jack.
Ronnie Correy **** Won the crucial heat 8 and looked after his younger partner where he could.
Freddie Lindgren **** A breathtaking ride for double points. Another stylish nights work fully justifying his paid 18.
Steve Johnston **** Has found an amazing line off the first corner. Won heat 14 and picked up points consistantly all night.
David Howe **** This is the david we know is in there. A couple of great battles with Norris which he won both times and a terrific ride to beat shields and then allow frddie through in heat 7
Tony Atkin ** Tried his hardest all evening but the pace was just too quick for him.
Krysztof Pecyna ** Looked strangely out of sorts from his performances of late. Did win a heat late on to keep us in with a chance of victory.
