The talk on the terraces centred around last week’s drama against Eastbourne… Coventry’s recent worrying run of success on away tracks… and the rumours that tonight’s local derby would be refereed by a trainee on her final test. Nice.
Have you ever noticed how meetings at Monmore Green run beautifully alongside the excellent sound system from the centre green? No? Thought not…
Heat 1 - Mikael Max ; Andreas Jonsson ; Ronnie Correy ; Chris Harris ; (4-2)(4-2)
“You’ve gotta roll with it” sing the Oasis boys, and the riders take it a little too literally as Correy, Jonsson and Harris all hit the deck in a tight first corner. All four back looks a decent decision. In the rerun Mikael streaks away in the second fastest time ever at Monmore (55.81). Ronnie passes Harris on the 2nd lap and has almost caught Jonsson by the finish. The track looks superb –very grippy again. So it’s time for a Mikael victory lap to the sound of…
“Hey Mickey you’ve been fined
Because your planes don’t leave on time
Hey Mickey…”
Heat 2 - Magnus Karlsson ; Tomas Topinka ; Martin Smolinski ; Krzysztof Pecyna(Fx) ; (3-3)(7-5)
The music helps the Coventry fans feel welcome as the riders come to the line to the sound of “Common People” by Pulp. Hopefully nobody gets beaten to one this week. KP hits the turn first, literally, as he slides off in front of Smolinski who lays it down. Strangely the blue exclusion light comes on well before the red stop lights, and for one moment it appears that the race will continue with both riders still on the deck. Pecyna is excluded. Magnus makes a poor gate in the rerun but uses his track knowledge to the full to take advantage of the Coventry pair drifting wide out of the 2nd bend. Magnus takes the plaudits to the bizarre combination of the theme from Mastermind (Magnus – geddit?) and “Place Your Hands” by Reef. Didn’t even know he smoked. Two heats, two first bend pile ups and still no fights. There’s already a queue of people asking for their money back at the speedway office…
Heat 3 - Fredrik Lindgren ; Rory Schlein ; Steve Johnston ; Morten Risager ; (4-2)(11-7)
It’s “OK Fred” time as Mr Lindgren rides a thrilling wide line to overtake both Bees (who gated for the 5-1). Johnno soon deals with Risager but can’t catch Schlein for 2nd place.
Heat 4 - Scott Nicholls ; David Howe ; Martin Smolinski ; Krzysztof Pecyna(R) ; (2-4)(13-11)
Smolinski gets away with a blatant rolling start that Hamill would be proud of… and the ref lets it go. David rounds the German on the 3rd bend but Nicholls is way in front. Pecyna barely completes a lap before his bike stops. Two rides, one lap, no points.
Heat 5 - Steve Johnston ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Andreas Jonsson ; Chris Harris ; (5-1)(18-12)
In another nod to the Coventry fans, the riders come to the tapes to the sound of Simple Minds. Alive and Kicking… insert your own joke about last week here. The tapes are up very quickly and the Wolves riders react first… Freddie rides a superb four laps to block everything that a quick looking Jonsson can throw at him.
Heat 6 - Mikael Max ; Ronnie Correy ; Scott Nicholls ; Tomas Topinka ; (5-1)(23-13)
Ronnie makes a lightning start, Mikael is right behind him until almost hitting the back of him going into the 3rd bend. Nicholls spots his chance to overtake, only for a determined Mikael to take the outside line and blast past him on the 2nd bend of lap 2. Excellent stuff from both Wolves and the Bees big guns are 5-1’d in successive heats!
Heat 7 - Morten Risager ; Rory Schlein ; David Howe ; Magnus Karlsson ; (1-5)(24-18)
Oh dear. A gift 5-1 for the Bees as David and Magnus contrive to produce an awful first lap of poor starting and mistakes leaving them far too much to do. Risager celebrates like he has just won the World Title, and frankly makes a bit of a tit of himself. (Old English phrase).
Heat 8 - Ronnie Correy ; Chris Harris ; Martin Smolinski ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; (3-3)(27-21)
So we have Coventry, “Bomber” Harris and a German in the same race. For a moment I feel like I’m trapped inside a Stan Boardman joke book… I escape in time to witness another terrible start as Ronnie and Risager are both moving before the tapes go up. No rerun again, Ronnie wins the race comfortably with Pecyna a poor last in his third (and final) ride.
Heat 9 - Scott Nicholls ; Steve Johnston ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Tomas Topinka ; (3-3)(30-24)
The track is noticeably drying out now. Johnno produces his trademark drive off the second bend to overtake Nicholls in aggressive style, only for Nicholls to come storming back under him on the 3rd bend of lap 2 for the win. Freddie’s wide line on the first turn leaves him stranded in 3rd and he can’t recover in time.
Heat 10 - Mikael Max ; Ronnie Correy ; Rory Schlein ; Morten Risager ; (5-1)(35-25)
U2’s “Pride” becomes Wolves Fans’ Pride as Mikael and Ronnie team ride to easily outpace the Bees pairing to increase the lead to ten. Ronnie hugs the inside, Mikael’s out in the dirt at about half throttle! No silly dance from Risager this time.
Heat 11 - Andreas Jonsson (Tactical Ride) ; David Howe ; Magnus Karlsson ; Chris Harris(X) ; (3-6)(38-31)
Controversy time… you knew there had to be some didn’t you? AJ seems to have the black and white helmet colour on long before the end of the previous heat to signify a golden double points whatsit ride (or something, like.) He gates but is stunned by a superb ride from Magnus who rides right around the fence on the first lap to take the lead. David spots his chance and storms up the inside to join him. AJ is stunned. Harris is stunned. I’m pretty surprised myself. “Dive Bomber” Harris (copyright Wolfgang 2005 - all rights reserved) goes down on the 3rd bend of lap 2, conveniently forgetting to get up in time before the race is stopped. This looks a clear “professional foul” but the trainee ref declines the option to award the heat and orders a rerun. “Stick to baking cakes!” shouts a WOMAN next to me. Jonsson gates in the rerun as you’d expect with David and Magnus way behind… only for his bike to start to splutter on the last lap. Somehow, the Wolves pair are so far behind they can’t take advantage.
Heat 12 - Fredrik Lindgren ; Tomas Topinka ; Rory Schlein ; Magnus Karlsson ; (3-3)(41-34)
Seven points is a nice advantage, so we’re hoping for 3 points or 5 (but not 4) out of this heat… and its OK again for Fred who makes a poor start but storms his way to the front inside two laps. Schlein passes Magnus for 3rd, and Coventry can’t use another double golden tactical whatsit in heat 13.
Heat 13 - Scott Nicholls ; Andreas Jonsson ; David Howe ; Mikael Max ; (1-5)(42-39)
It’s heat 13 which is usually spelt “o-n-e-f-i-v-e” down our way. And so it continues as Mikael makes a poor start and is unable to find a way past David who barely gets close to the Bees’ top stingers. The lead is suddenly down to three points and with heat 15 looming we need a heat advantage from heat 14…
Heat 14 - Steve Johnston ; Tomas Topinka ; Morten Risager ; Magnus Karlsson ; (3-3)(45-42)
A superb captain’s ride from Johnno and a vital heat win… Coventry are away for the 5-1 but Johnno is having none of it, he takes Risager on the second lap and drives hard underneath Topinka entering the last lap. Excellent, determined, aggressive stuff from the skipper, but another poor ride from Magnus at the back leads us into a last heat decider.
Heat 15 - Mikael Max ; Andreas Jonsson ; Scott Nicholls ; Fredrik Lindgren ; (3-3)(48-45)
I’d have favoured the fast starting Ronnie Correy in this one, but the Undertones’ superb “Teenage Kicks” heralds the arrival of Freddie as Mikael’s partner. It’s another ragged start and Freddie and Scott Nicholls engage in a furious battle for third place, allowing Jonsson and Max to pull away. Nicholls finally passes Lindgren but Mikael is safe in second when Jonsson slows again… this time losing the lead. We’ve done it! Phew… that was hard work.
