^^ - tactical ride from 15 metres.
This was supposed to be the match where PK and Sam returned to Monmore and showed us why they should have been included in our squad this year…WRONG! Wolves surprised many with a comfortable win, largely thanks to the sterling efforts of David and Freddie and good gating from all seven members of the side – in fact many races were decided on the first lap, leaving little action for the Sky cameras.. Every Wolf got at least one paid win, with Peterborough only taking two heat advantages.
There was a slightly worrying moment before the start, as a Hi-Q service van (ironic or what?) was parked on the track attending to a puncture on the water cart. It could not be repaired, and the cart was out of action for the rest of the night. What bearing would this have on the track…?
Heat 1 (re-run): P Karlsson, Max, M Karlsson, L Dryml (f.exc), Correy (exc, 2 mins), 56.05. 3-3, 3-3.
Problems with the cut-out meant that Ronnie’s bike refused to fire up on the startline and he was excluded, with Peter Adams replacing him with Magnus. PK led the first lap before Dryml fell and went into the air fence on turn two. He was excluded, and the three Karlsson brothers had the track to themselves for the rerun! PK cleared off in front for the win.
Heat 2: M Karlsson, Pecyna, Lee, Bager, 57.39. 5-1, 8-4.
Wolves gated, with Bager trying the inside of Krys for second only to slip behind Lee.
Heat 3 (re-run): Lindgren, A Dryml, Kylmakorpi, Johnston, 56.40. 3-3, 11-7.
The tapes go up erratically and hit Johno in the face, with the referee calling a re-run. On the restart Freddie led all the way, with the Peterborough pair taking Johno in one move on turn one and holding him off.
Heat 4 (re-run): Howe, Ermolenko, Lee, Pecyna (ret-puncture), 56.99. 3-3, 14-10.
At the first attempt David moved off well before the tapes rose, with Sam staying on the line and pointing at David’s gate as if to say “Where was he going?” The rerun saw a surprise as David and Krys held sway over Sam for the first lap only for Krys’s back tyre to blow out. David kept it smooth for the win.
Heat 5 (re-run): Lindgren, Johnston, L Dryml, P Karlsson (f.exc), 57.59. 5-1, 19-11.
PK went wide on turn two and slid into the fence in a carbon copy of his partner’s Heat 1 fall. He was excluded after the referee viewed the TV replays, and Wolves were clear for the 5-1 in the rerun.
Heat 6: Max, Correy, Bager, Ermolenko, 57.98. 5-1, 24-12.
No, you’re not seeing things! Mikael gated and led as Sam almost went straight on at turn two, dropping to the rear. Wolves were left clear for another surprise 5-1.
Heat 7: Howe, Kylmakorpi (double), M Karlsson, A Dryml, 57.47. 4-4, 28-16.
Kylmo got the best start in the black and white, but David shot down the inside of him on the back straight, going on to take a great second win.
Heat 8 (re-run): Pecyna, Correy, Lee, L Dryml (f.exc), 58.33. 5-1, 33-17.
Dryml repeated his heat 1 fall and was excluded once again, with Krys gating well and taking the rerun from Ronnie.
Heat 9: Lindgren, Johnston, Bager, Ermolenko, 57.56. 5-1, 38-18.
Wolves gated and led all the way (see a pattern emerging?) while the Panthers almost fell over each other at the back on several occasions. Sam who?
Heat 10: A Dryml, Correy, Max, Kylmakorpi, 58.09. 3-3, 41-21.
A ragged start saw Dryml emerge in front, with Wolves staying close together in his wake.
Heat 11: P Karlsson (double), Howe, L Dryml, M Karlsson, 57.87. 2-7, 43-28.
From the gate, with PK’s double putting the bonus point slightly in doubt.
Heat 12: Lindgren, A Dryml, Bager, Pecyna, 58.37. 3-3, 46-31.
From the gate – was another maximum on the cards for Freddie?
Heat 13: Max, P Karlsson, Howe, Ermolenko (f.rem), 57.56. 4-2, 50-33.
Yes, a heat advantage in Heat 13! Sam spun off at turn one but quickly remounted, while Mikael won with David pushing PK hard for second.
Heat 14: Johnston, Kylmakorpi, M Karlsson, A Dryml (tac sub, 15 metres), 58.52. 4-2, 54-35.
Johno took the lead on turn two and stayed ahead, with Magnus just failing to catch Kylmo for second. Dryml’s slightly pointless 15-metre tactical ride yielded nothing and prompted quote of the night from forum member Lupus: “Ales? Who the **** is Ales?”
Heat 15 (re-run): P Karlsson, Kylmakorpi, Max, Lindgren (exc), 58.37. 1-5, 55-40.
Peterborough led the first lap only for Kylmo to straighten up and fall on lap two at turn two. The TV replays showed that Freddie had made contact with the Finn, and after deliberation the referee excluded Freddie, dashing his hopes of a maximum. The visitors led the rerun all the way.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ** Dry, but cold and windy.
Track conditions: *** The combination of the problems with the water cart and the blustery weather meant that the track was much drier and less grippy than it could have been.
Attendance: **** Despite the lure of the TV, a large weasel of a crowd was in attendance.
Wolves’ performance: ***** A true seven-man effort.
Entertainment value: * Sadly, only one notable passing move all night.
Man of the Match: David Howe gets it this week for a good upturn of form.
Referee (Stuart Wilson): **** All decisions correct in my eyes, though some will probably dispute Heat 15.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: *** A little below his usual standard.
Ronnie Correy: *** Got faster as the night went on.
Fredrik Lindgren: **** Unlucky not to score a max.
Steve Johnston: *** Also improved as the night progressed.
David Howe: **** Looked much more rapid than of late.
Magnus Karlsson: *** Tried hard all night.
Krzysztof Pecyna: ** Let down by a puncture while ahead of Sam.
This win sets the balance nicely for the second leg at the Showground on Friday, but will 15 points be enough? Some of our riders have shown their dislike for the Peterborough circuit before, but will we be able to pull together and achieve the impossible?
