Race Details:
Heat 1
Karlsson, MIKAEL, L Dryml, RONNIE 4-2 4-2
The track was heavily watered to try and deal with the extremely high temperatures – 30 degrees as we drove down the A14, and 27 at the track. P’boro won the toss and chose 2 and 4. The first race of this meeting probably confirmed our worst fears about how it would progress as PK gated and led from start to finish and the other three spread out in line astern. Mind you, PK was only 0.2 seconds outside the track record!
Heat 2
Bager, MAGNUS, Lee, KRYZSTOF 4-2 8-4
Much the same as heat 1 – from the tapes. Magnus challenged Bager for a lap and a half but then drifted backwards. Krys missed the start (!) and trailed home.
Heat 3
A Dryml, FREDDIE, Kylmakorpi, JOHNNO 4-2 12-6
Now we got a glimpse of the excellent racing that was to follow as Freddie Lindgren and Ales (Who the ……!) Dryml raced side by side for the first two laps before Dryml prevailed. Johnno missed a golden opportunity to pass Kylmakoorpi as he messed up the first bend of the last lap but Steve was too far behind having seemingly settled for last place. How costly could this be later on?
Heat 4
Ermolenko, DAVID, KRYZSTOF, Lee 3-3 15-9
A good start from Krys to follow Sam around the first bend and then David made a superb third/fourth bend outside move to go round both Lee and Krys but did not really trouble Sam out in the lead.
Heat 5
A Dryml, MIKAEL, RONNIE, Kylmakorpi 3-3 18-12
From the gate. Mikael challenged Dryml for a lap or so, and Ronnie held off a determined Kylmakoorpi.
Heat 6
Karlsson, L Dryml, DAVID, MAGNUS 5-1 23-13
At the first attempt it looked like David moved too early and the ref stopped the race and brought them back. In the restart PK led with David and Magnus holding the minor places. Lukas Dryml then picked off Magnus at the end of the first lap and chased David who made a mistake on the last bend of the race to allow P’boro the 5-1. Another costly mistake!
Heat 7
JOHNNO, FREDDIE, Bager, Ermolenko 1-5 24-18
Big discussion before this race amongst the fans about who should have the tactical ride in this race. In the event the opportunity to double our points, at no risk, was squandered and the TR was not used. Why? Rumour has it that it had been offered by Peter Adams to both Freddie and Johnno but both had turned it down. Surely PA should have told them rather than ask. In the end, this decision alone did not lose us the meeting but it may have made a difference to our rider’s psychological approach to later races. It was a brilliant race with all four riders deserving great credit as they were so close to each other as they raced. Johnno rode the most outrageous outside line and got a great deal of drive from it but when, in lap 3 Sam tried the same line he fell foul of the extra dirt and slid off allowing our Wolves pair to keep Bager out and record a terrific 1-5.
But – three very important TR points were dropped in this race.
Heat 8
KRZYSTOF, RONNIE, L Dryml, Lee 1-5 25-23
First attempt stopped by ref. No-one can see anything wrong with the start. In the re-run Wolves gate! Krys rides off smoothly into the sunset – almost literally. Dryml made the Rocket work very hard to maintain his second place but Ron put the bike in the right place in the bends (where Dryml was quicker) and stretched away on the straights. Only two points behind now - what a comeback!
Heat 9
A Dryml, DAVID, Kylmakorpi, MAGNUS 4-2 29-25
Another great race in which Wolves were on a 5-1 as David gated and then Magnus drove around the outside to team up with him. But Dryml had other ideas and first passed Magnus and then David in spectacular fashion to win the race. Kylmakoorpi challenged Magnus for three and a half laps and then took third place from him on the last bend of the race.
Heat 10
FREDDIE, Karlsson, JOHNNO, L Dryml 2-4 31-29
A brilliant win from the start for Freddie who showed no respect for PK’s reputation and blitzed him. Johnno swapped places several times with Lukas Dryml but held on for the third place.
Heat 11
MIKAEL, Ermolenko, RONNIE, Bager 2-4 33-33
Mikael led from the start but Sam and Ronnie had a ding-dong battle for second place which Sam managed to win. Mikael appeared to have a machinery problem on the last home straight and slowed dramatically as Sam closed him down very quickly but Mike just made it over the line for the win. It was suggested that he had suffered a puncture but I cannot confirm this. Whatever – the scores were now level and the excitement factor on the back straight was at fever pitch – and Freddie’s in the next heat!
Heat 12
FREDDIE, A Dryml, Bager, MAGNUS 3-3 36-36
This has got to be one of the best races I have ever seen. Freddie completely missed the start and must have been 20 metres behind the P’boro pair and Magnus as he exited the second bend. But then he wound on the gas and chose the widest line possible around the third/fourth bends and simply flew past Magnus and the very quick Bager as if they were spectators. Then he set off after Ales Dryml who at this point was unbeaten and appeared unbeatable. Fred doesn’t know what those words mean and so reeled him in over the next three laps and then powered once again around the very widest line and blew Dryml away on the run in to the finishing flag. Completely breathtaking speedway and sure proof that we have got one of the world’s very best riders in our team – and he’s only NINETEEN! Go Freddie….
Heat 13
Karlsson, MIKAEL, Ermolenko, DAVID F/X 4-2 40-38
In the first running of the race David fell as he entered the first bend and hit the safety fence very hard. He was down for a long time but did return to the pits, limping heavily, where he confronted Sam presumably in the belief that he caused the incident. The ref saw it differently and excluded David from the restart. I can’t say that I saw the accident clearly enough to comment. Unfortunately I heard on our way home that David has been subsequently taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle. Best wishes to him for a swift recovery.
In the rerun PK led from the start to win the race and Mikael tried out the wide line to stay just ahead of Sam who rode a very tight inside line for the whole race.
Heat 14
Kylmakorpi, JOHNNO, Bager, Kryz 4-2 44-40
Johnno led for half a lap but battled with Kylmakoorpi who got the better of him as the finished the first lap and the positions remained the same to the finish.
Heat 15
FREDDIE, A Dryml, Karlsson, MIKAEL 3-3 47-43
We need a 5-1 to force a draw! For three and a half laps we’ve got a 5-1!!
If heat 12 was one of the best races I have ever seen then this one was very nearly as good. All four riders were within a few feet of each other for the whole race and places were swapping but Wolves seem to keep coming out of the bends in the 5-1 positions and we were ecstatic along the back straight. However, Ales Dryml made a very daring move on the inside of Freddie as they entered the last lap, last bend at very high speed. Fred had to take evasive action and moved a little wider which completely compromised Mikael’s line and slowed him dramatically. Dryml then passed Freddie and PK passed his brother but Freddie was not prepared to settle for second place and found the dirt line and a huge handful of throttle and screamed down the home straight to retake first place from Dryml as they passed the chequered flag. An excellent finish from him but just not quite enough for Wolves. No criticism whatsoever of Mikael – he had done it all correctly in that race but was forced to shut off the throttle as Freddie was moved wide by Dryml. Got to applaud Dryml for this firm but fair move which secured the match points for his team.
Considering the pasting we normally suffer at the Showground this was an epic performance from Wolves and we all walked away very proud and satisfied with what we had seen even though the win had slipped from our grasp. I know it is ‘ifs and buts’ but if only we had used the Tactical Ride when it was on offer, and if only those couple of important mistakes on the last bends had not happened we could have done the almost impossible and taken away the whole three league points.
As it is I would like to thank the Peterborough team for contributing to what was a truly memorable meeting and to especially thank our team for their incredible efforts and for entertaining me in absolutely first class fashion. Thanks guys.
It has now been confirmed that David has broken his ankle and will be out of action for about six weeks. Get well soon David.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** Couldn’t be much better - beautifully warm and sunny.
Track conditions: **** Very good, especially considering the hot weather. Many tracks should take notice of the excellent level of watering and amount of dirt which made for a top class racing surface. Well done.
Attendance: *** Not a massive crowd but those that weren’t there will regret their decision to do something else instead.
Wolves’ performance: ***** First class
Entertainment value: ***** You don’t see many meetings as entertaining as this was.
Man of the Match: Freddie Lindgren – without a shadow of a doubt!
Referee (PAUL ACKROYD): *** A couple of strange restart decisions, and then the Sam/David incident which I am unsure about.
Rider 5 Star Ratings:
Mikael Max: *** Better than I would have expected after recent form at P’boro but only average stars because he didn’t beat Ales Dryml or his brother.
Ronnie Correy: *** Great third ride – otherwise did his job well.
Fredrik Lindgren: ***** Couldn’t have been more committed. Simply superb.
Steve Johnston: **** Good performance apart from missing a big chance in heat 3.
David Howe: *** As with Mikael, better than recent P’boro meetings.
Magnus Karlsson: ** Never seemed to get to grips with the meeting after his first race.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** When he gated he rode well but didn’t look like passing anyone.
This was one of those meetings that we will look back on in future seasons and remember how well we worked as a team and also the individual performance of Fredrik Lindgren. After the meeting he expressed how please he was with the way he had ridden and how much he had enjoyed himself.
We all left the track buzzing with conversation about the various incidents and excellent racing and that is what I think speedway is all about. Winning or losing is not quite as important as seeing a bostin’ meeting – and hell’s teeth, did we see a bostin’ meeting last night!!!
Very proud to be a Wolf
