This wasn’t just a big win, it was an absolute Hammering! The scoreline sadly does not belie the quality of the racing as Wolves outgated and outclassed the visitors, with Magnus recording a well-deserved first paid maximum including a superb Heat 15 win. Mikael also flew to a full Max – is this the first time that two brothers have scored maximums in the same match? The fact that Arena only took two heat advantages all night – including a six-point tactical ride – underlines Wolves’ dominance.
Heat 1 (re-run): Max, Correy, Hurry, Havelock (f.excl), 56.50. 5-1, 5-1.
Havvy got the best start as Ronnie used a wide line to go second. Havvy then locked up on turn two next time round, leaving Ronnie nowhere to go but into the back of him, with the red lights on immediately. Both riders stayed down for a time, but eventually got to their feet although Havvy looked shaken. Referee Peter Clarke decided Havvy was at fault after studying video replays. Mikael led all the way on the restart as Ronnie went inside Hurry for second, with Hurry then strangely falling on the home straight on his own! He remounted and struggled round for a point.
Heat 2: Pecyna, Karlsson, Larsen, Povazhny, 58.52. 5-1, 10-2.
From the gate, with Krys using an incredibly wide line to blast around for the win.
Heat 3: Lindgren, Johnston, Lanham, Darkin, 57.72. 5-1, 15-3.
Freddie led all the way, with Johno going inside both Hammers in one move on turn two for second.
Heat 4: Max, Shields, Larsen, Pecyna (fell), 57.25. 3-3, 18-6.
Mikael rounded Shields for the lead on the first turn, with Krys missing the gate and dropping away at the back. He then ran very wide on the last turn and clipped the air fence to fall.
Heat 5: Lindgren, Johnston, Hurry, Havelock (ret), 57.90. 5-1, 23-7.
Wolves led from the start once again, with Havvy later pulling up and withdrawing from the meeting with bruising from his earlier crash. Hurry closed in on the Wolves, but it was another 5-1 with Johno looking to be just ahead of Freddie on the line, but the referee called it differently.
Heat 6: Max, Povazhny, Shields, Correy, 56.51. 3-3, 26-10.
Arena gated but Mikael rounded both on turn two to lead once again. Ronnie slid wider and wider at the rear, but avoided the fence.
Heat 7: Lindgren, Karlsson, Darkin, Lanham, 58.33. 5-1, 31-11.
Wolves from the gate, crossing the line together. I thought Magnus had got there but the referee gave it to Freddie.
Heat 8: Correy, Pecyna, Hurry, Larsen, 57.83. 5-1, 36-12.
Krys gated and the Wolves led, but Krys went wide and the visitors both went inside him down the back straight. Krys then went for his outside line and amazingly rounded both Hammers out of turn four for second! Ronnie continued for the win, and Wolves had already all but sealed the win.
Heat 9: Shields (double), Lindgren, Johnston, Povazhny, 57.49. 6, 3-39-18.
Shields was handed the black and white helmet in this one, and the “Schlein Slayer” (try and say that out loud!) led all the way to end Freddie’s maximum hopes.
Heat 10: Max, Correy, Darkin, Lanham, 57.15. 5-1, 44-19.
Straightforward from the gate once again, with Wolves now 25 points up and assured of victory.
Heat 11: Johnston, Karlsson, Hurry (double), Larsen, 58.46. 5-2, 49-21.
Hurry was “doubled” in this one as Arena desperately tried to close the gap for the second leg, but it was to no avail as Magnus led all the way, with Johno taking both Hammers on the back straight once again for second.
Heat 12 (awarded): Lanham, Povazhny, Pecyna (f.rem), Lindgren (fell). 1-5, 50-26.
There always seems to be one heat in every home match where the Wolves lose out big time, and this was it this week. The home pair gated but ran wide on turn one handing the visitors the advantage. Freddie almost fell on turn four, before Krys came down at the end of lap three. As he remounted Freddie lost it on turn one and sustained a blow where it hurts most, with the race being halted to allow Freddie a safe exit from the track.
Heat 13: Max, Correy, Povazhny, Shields (f, rem, ret), 57.67. 5-1, 55-27.
Mikael led throughout again, with Shields falling on turn two and remounting only to slow up and retire.
Heat 14: Johnston, Karlsson, Larsen, Darkin, 59.14. 5-1, 60-28.
Johno led all the way as Magnus and Larsen raced side-by-side all the way in the best race of the match by far. Magnus took the place and celebrated his first ever paid maximum, only to be named in Heat 15 along with Johno!
Heat 15: Karlsson, Shields, Lanham, Johnston, 58.42. 3-3, 63-31.
There were doubts over Magnus’s maximum before this one, but he blew all the worries away by holding off Shields to take a brilliant win. Johno gave it his all at the back but couldn’t catch Lanham.
Five star ratings:
Weather: ***** Amazingly good for a Bank Holiday.
Track conditions: *** The riders seemed to struggle in the early stages, although the track looked OK. The blue groove, however, did appear in the last three heats.
Attendance: **** A young stoat.
Wolves performance: **** A good all-round performance, but Arena were pretty poor to say the least.
Entertainment value: ** Only a couple of passes once again.
Man of the Match: Absolutely no contest – it just has to be Magnus Karlsson.
Referee (Peter Clarke): *** Good use of the video replay, but couldn’t call two close Wolves finishes properly.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: ***** A full Max.
Ronnie Correy: *** His usual full effort.
Freddie Lindgren: **** Great early on, then a rather painful incident.
Steve Johnston: **** Tried to race everyone all night.
Magnus Karlsson: ***** Magnificent.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Did his job at reserve.
A great performance to fire up the team with two away matches coming up later this week. Let’s hope our great form continues and we can maybe – just maybe – pick up our first away win of the year.
