Wolves win 100-88 on aggregate.
Wolves chalked up another comfortable win on their home race strip, with only one visiting rider really troubling them once again. The star of this match was undoubtedly Krzysztof Pecyna, who racked up his highest score in Britain to date and was only led home by Greg Hancock. Mikael and Johno returned to form after their poor displays at Oxford last week, with Mikael coming close to a full Max. All six members of the side mucked in once again to produce a good match, with some good racing punctuated by a couple of nasty-looking crashes.
Heat 1: Max, Hancock, Correy, McGowan, 56.40. 4-2, 4-2.
A predictable result, with Mikael leading from the tapes. Ronnie chased Hancock well but remained behind.
Heat 2: Pecyna, Karlsson, Bajerski, Makovsky, 58.80. 5-1, 9-3.
The Wolves gated, with Krys leading as Magnus went inside Bajerski on the back straight for second. Bajerski closed up before Krys slowed suddenly with half a lap to go, with Magnus also slowing down and holding out Bajerski to save the 5-1.
Heat 3 (re-run): Jensen, Johnston, Coorrey, Iversen (f.exc), 56.60. 3-3, 12-6.
Oxford gated and “Puk” Iversen led for a lap, only for his engine to stop rounding the pits turn. As he threw his hand aloft to signal the problem, his team mate was powerless to avoid running into the back of him. Ronnie laid down the instant he saw Puk slow, but couldn’t avoid the pile-up. Jesper was down for a short time afterwards, but eventually got to his feet to a good reception from his former club’s fans. He was obviously unhurt as he led all the way in the rerun.
Heat 4: Pecyna, Lindgren, Jensen, Bajerski, 57.07. 5-1, 17-7.
Krys led all the way once again, while Freddie went side by side with Jesper early on, with Freddie cutting through on the inside on lap two. Jesper almost fell ending lap three, and another 5-1 was secure.
Heat 5: Hancock (double), Johnston, McGowan, Karlsson, 57.52. 2-7, 19-14.
Nigel Wagstaff has never been known to hang around when it comes to tactics, and the double rule was out as soon as possible. Hancock led all the way as further back Johno produced a hard piece of riding to take McGowan wide for second on lap one, and held on to follow Hancock home.
Heat 6: Max, Iversen, Correy, Makovsky, 56.63. 23-16.
Puk punted Ronnie wide on the first turn only for Mikael to take the Oxford man for the lead on the inside. Ronnie tries but fails to catch Puk for second.
Heat 7: Jensen, Lindgren, Iversen, Karlsson, 57.09. 2-4, 25-20.
Oxford led off but Freddie tried hard to take Jesper wide, remaining in second. Puk almost fell on the final lap, but kept ahead of Magnus for Oxxford’s second, and final, heat advantage of the night.
Heat 8: Pecyna, Correy, Bajerski, McGowan, 57.99. 5-1, 30-21.
Krys kept up his unbeaten run by leading all the way, while there was a good race behind him. Ronnie and both Oxford riders all went side by side out of turn two, with Ronnie keeping to the inside line to hold second all the way.
Heat 9: Hancock, Pecyna, Johnston, Makovsky, 57.81. 3-3, 33-24.
Krys’s run came to an end as Hancock led throughout, but Krys did try the outside on turn two and almost collected the fence.
Heat 10: Max, Correy, Jensen, Iversen (double), 56.36. 5-1, 38-25.
From the gate, with Jesper appearing not to realise his partner was on a double – bit of a Puk-up there, Oxford!
Heat 11: Hancock, Lindgren, Karlsson, McGowan, 57.25. 3-3, 41-28.
Wolves all but sealed the win by team riding (yes, really!) round behind Hancock.
Heat 12 (re-run): Johnston, Bajerski, Jensen, Pecyna (f.exc), 57.86. 3-3, 44-31.
Oxford led away as Krys fell on turn two and was slow to remount, with referee Graham Flint having no option but to stop the race. Krys was excluded, and Oxford gated again only for Johno to shoot down the inside of both out of turn two for the lead, going on for the win.
Heat 13: Hancock, Max, Lindgren, McGowan, 57.01. 3-3, 47-34.
And so to the dreaded heat 13 – would our changed line-up make any difference? Not quite this time, as Hancock held on around the outside for the win. Freddie held third throughout, despite a scary moment on the pits bend on lap three.
Heat 14 (re-run): Pecyna, Johnston, Bajerski, Iversen (ret), 58.60. 5-1, 52-35.
As the riders left the start the red lights went on - the replays showed no apparent reason for this. As they did so Jesper made contact with Krys on the first turn, sending him spinning off onto the outside. Johno was powerless to avoid him and ran over his bike, the impact catapulting Johno headlong into the air fence in a frightening crash. Amazingly both Wolves got to their feet and were ready for the rerun, which saw Krys take Bajerski for second on the back straight as Puk led. Puk’s engine then went bang exiting turn four, with the Dane scraping the fence but somehow holding on and making it to the centre. This latest Puk-up left Wolves clear for the 5-1 – especially after Bajerski also slowed down on the last lap.
Heat 15: Max, Hancock, Jensen, Lindgren, 56.17. 3-3, 55-38.
Mikael blasted round the boards in the fastest time of the night (in the last race!) for the win, while Oxford team-rode to keep Freddie at the back.
Five star ratings:
Weather: ***** No complaints at all.
Track conditions: **** Better than expected, with some very fast race times.
Attendance: *** A normal Monmore crowd (if there is such a thing…).
Wolves’ performance: **** Quelled what resistance Oxford could offer – anything was better than last week’s away leg!
Entertainment value: *** Some heats were a little processional, but with some close racing in between.
Man of the Match: It’s got to be Krzysztof Pecyna for his superb points haul.
Referee (Graham Flint): **** Not sure why heat 14 was stopped (before the crash), other than that OK.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: **** A great improvement on his away form.
Ronnie Correy: *** Packed the places as usual.
Steve Johnston: **** Some daring moves and a lucky escape for our never-say-die captain.
Fredrik Lindgren: *** Settled into his new team spot well.
Magnus Karlsson: *** Put in his usual hard effort.
Krzysztof Pecyna: **** Superb.
Well, with such an evenly matched team, it will be interesting to see them take each other on in next week’s individual meeting. Will one of them come out on top, or will a new face triumph? Either way, let’s hope that no injuries result (I’m lying on a wooden table as I type this) and that Adam Skornicki has a successful return to Monmore – yes folks, the Rockman is back!
