Despite this match being a good all-round performance from the Wolves, two men stood out from the pack. Krys produced four superb rides for his first ever paid maximum in Britain – surely no longer an unknown reserve! – while Adam Skornicki rode as if he had never been away from Monmore to reach the nominated heat and top score. Wolves took the big win that several were predicting, despite the best efforts of PK and Sam.
One unusual sight before the start was what looked like green sawdust spread across the inside of turn one. After some deliberation between forum members Lawt and MM2, it was decided that the substance was dried, hydrogenated snot.
Wolves won the toss and took gates one and three.
Heat 1: Max, P Karlsson, Correy, L Dryml, 56.38. 4-2, 4-2.
Mikael passed his brother heading into the Park turn for the first time to win in a very quick time, while Ronnie took the wide-riding Dryml for third on the back straight.
Heat 2: Pecyna, M Karlsson, Bager, Hawkins, 58.59. 5-1, 9-3.
Krys led all the way with Magnus following, while Hawkins looked very unsettled at the back.
Heat 3: Skornicki, Ermolenko, Johnston, A Dryml, 58.46. 4-2, 13-5.
Adam rode an almost inch-perfect race for the win, while Sam and Johno – debuting a brand new bike – had a good scrap behind, with Sam eventually taking Johno slightly wide on lap three for the place. Mmmm doughnuts!
Heat 4: Pecyna, Ermolenko, Hawkins, Lindgren (ret), 57.81. 3-3, 16-8.
Freddie retired after two turns, while Krys led throughout for his second win in a respectable time. (Thanks to Lawt for filling me in on the early stages of this one, as my phone rang at the most inappropriate moment!)
Heat 5: P Karlsson, Skornicki, L Dryml, Johnston, 57.13. 2-4, 18-12.
Peterborough gated and led the first lap until Adam went underneath Dryml, but there was no catching PK this time. Johno’s new black and orange bike – dubbed “The Flymo” by one fan – looked very slow at the back.
Heat 6: Max, Ermolenko, Correy, Bager, 58.17. 4-2, 22-14.
Mikael led all the way, but behind him Ronnie had a great race with both visitors, almost making contact with Badger a few times. Badger almost went into the fence on the last turn, allowing Ronnie to take a safe third behind Sam.
Heat 7: Lindgren, Bager, M Karlsson, A Dryml, 58.53. 4-2, 26-16.
Freddie led all the way, while Magnus found a gap outside Dryml out of turn two, and pressured Badger with contact almost occurring.
Heat 8: Pecyna, L Dryml (double), Correy, Bager, 57.88. 4-4, 30-20.
Krys led all the way for the third time despite locking up on turn two, with Ronnie taking third from Badger on lap three, but failing to catch Dryml who took four points.
Heat 9: Skornicki, Johnston, Hawkins, Ermolenko (fell, rem, ret), 59.00. 5-1, 35-21.
Sam led until falling at turn four and was almost hit by Adam, but the Donut King continued to lead home Johno for the 5-1. Sam remounted but pulled off into the pits on the last lap. Mmmm doughnuts!
Heat 10: L Dryml, Max, Correy, A Dryml (fell, rem), 58.29. 3-3, 38-24.
Ales Dryml spun off on turn two, remounting to finish at the back. Mikael stayed behind Ronnie for three laps, before passing to challenge Lukas for the lead, but the Czech took Peterborough’s second heat win of the night.
Heat 11: P Karlsson (double), L Dryml, M Karlsson, Lindgren, 57.34. 1-8, 39-32.
Freddie gated and held out PK until taken wide at the start of lap two, with Freddie almost falling and dropping to the back. Panthers continued for the 8-1.
Heat 12: Skornicki, Pecyna, Bager, A Dryml, 58.63. 5-1, 44-33.
Adam led all the way for the win and more doughnuts, while Krys superbly swept around Badger on the home straight for second to seal the win for Wolves – yes, a pass from Krys!
Heat 13: P Karlsson, Lindgren, Max, Ermolenko, 56.70. 3-3, 47-36.
PK led all the way to win in a very fast time, while Freddie went inside Mikael and Sam in one move for second on lap one.
Heat 14: M Karlsson, Johnston, Ermolenko (15m double), A Dryml (ret), 58.46. 5-2, 52-38.
Magnus led from the gate, while Johno worked hard to hold out Dryml until he pulled up starting lap three. Sam made little impression at the back from his handicap.
Heat 15 (re-run): P Karlsson, Max, Skornicki, L Dryml (fell, excl), 57.21. 3-3, 55-41.
Dryml spun off on the first turn, with Adam also coming down for the only stoppage of the night. Dryml was correctly excluded as there had been no contact, and PK led the re-run all the way from Mikael and Adam, who still celebrated with doughnuts.
Five star ratings:
Weather: ***** In this country, you can never really complain that it’s too hot, can you?
Track conditions: **** Sticky throughout, but not 100% consistent.
Attendance: **** A fairly big crowd, doubtlessly increased by the weather.
Wolves’ performance: **** Johno’s new bikes did not seem quick, but there were no other faults.
Entertainment value: ***** There were one or two processions, but an enjoyable night was had by all.
Man of the Match: I’ll probably get some criticism for this, but you can’t ignore a first British maximum – Krzysztof Pecyna gets the award.
Referee (Robbie Perks): ***** Called Heat 15 perfectly.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: **** Looked as fast as ever.
Ronnie Correy: *** Did his usual consistent job.
Adam Skornicki: ***** Far above the expectations of many.
Steve Johnston: ** New machinery not quite up to scratch.
Fredrik Lindgren: *** Problems not entirely his own fault.
Magnus Karlsson: *** Did his job from reserve.
Krzysztof Pecyna: ***** Simply stunning.
This will certainly give us hope for the bonus point, and also fire us up for the trip to Swindon on Thursday. I know that a lot of Wolfies are making the trip down to Blunsdon, so let’s be sure to make plenty of noise for the team.
Once a Wolf, always a Wolf
