WOLVES 47 IPSWICH 43, ELITE LEAGUE, MONDAY 27TH JUNE
Parry’s International Wolves:
Mikael Max 2 3 3 3 3 =14
Ronnie Correy 1* R 2* 2 =5+2
Adam Skornicki 0 3 2 1* =6+1
Steve Johnston 2 1 1* 1* =5+2
Fredrik Lindgren 2 3 2 R 0 =7
Magnus Karlsson 2* 0 0 =2+1
Krzysztof Pecyna 3 1* X 2 2 =8+1
Evening Star Witches:
Hans N. Andersen 3 2 1 1* 1* =8+2
Robert Miskowiak 0 0 3 3 =6
Kim Jansson 3 2 1 3 =9
Chris Louis 1 1* 0 3 =5+1
Piotr Protasiewicz 3 2 3 2 2 =12
Karol Baran 0 1* 0 =1+1
Kevin Doolan 1 0 1 0 0 =2
Wolves may have taken a fine win, by not nearly by as much as most fans expected. With no Daniel King, and Karol Baran a doubt owing to a recent injury, the Witches looked easy targets, but things are rarely that way at Monmore. While Mikael was by far the star of the night, the rest of the team packed out the placings to just about pull it off amid some excellent racing. Ronnie’s mechanical woes have yet to leave him, while Magnus rode well for almost no reward.
Heat 1: Andersen, Max, Correy, Miskowiak, 56.73. 3-3, 3-3.
Ipswich gated, but Mikael and Ronnie both flew past him down the back straight. Mikael closed in on the leader and went for a last bend pass, but the Dane just took the win.
Heat 2: Pecyna, Karlsson, Doolan, Baran, 57.75. 5-1, 8-4.
From the gate.
Heat 3: Jansson, Johnston, Louis, Skornicki, 57.65. 2-4, 10-8.
Jansson led at the first turn, and took the challenging Adam wide down the back straight dropping him to last. Next time around Adam took third from Louis after coming from a long way back only for Louis to retake him seconds later. Adam tried his hardest but a lock-up on lap three confined him to the back.
Heat 4: Protasiewicz, Lindgren, Pecyna, Doolan, 57.37. 3-3, 13-11.
Krys tried the inside of Pepe only for Freddie to superbly go inside both. Pepe stole the lead back on the second lap, with Freddie trying the inside line on him throughout, before switching to the outside for a last bend lunge which just failed.
Heat 5: Skornicki, Andersen, Johnston, Miskowiak, 56.83. 4-2, 17-13.
Adam led from the gate, heading Andersen home for a sugar doughnut of a win. Johno started slowly but caught Miskowiak with a good outside move at half distance.
Heat 6: Max, Protasiewicz, Baran, Correy (ret), 56.70. 3-3, 20-16.
Pepe led the first lap until going wide allowing Mikael up the inside of him, while Ronnie was throwing everything at the Pole behind. He finally took second on lap three after finding grip on turn two, but sadly it all came to nothing as his bike let him down starting the last lap. Baran also slowed up at the same moment, but managed to keep going for third.
Heat 7: Lindgren, Jansson, Louis, Karlsson, 57.15. 3-3, 23-19.
Freddie all the way this time, with the Ipswich pair staying close to keep Magnus at the back.
Heat 8 (re-run): Miskowiak, Correy, Doolan, Pecyna (f.exc), 58.37. 2-4, 25-23.
Krys made his usual good start, and as usual moved for the wide line into turn two. Unfortunately Ronnie (who has apparently transferred to Ipswich, according to an Express & Star picture caption!) was already there and the pair clashed and went into the air fence! Krys was excluded, and both were fortunately OK. The rerun saw Ipswich gate, with Ronnie taking second out of turn two and challenging Miskowiak all the way, but the World Under-21 champion held on for his first points.
Heat 9: Protasiewicz, Skornicki, Johnston, Baran, 57.80. 3-3, 28-26.
The track was drying out by this point, and the action was reduced. Pepe led all the way in this one, despite Adam trying the now favoured outside line.
Heat 10: Max, Correy, Jansson, Louis, 58.56. 5-1, 33-27.
The tentative gap was stretched slightly in controversial fashion as Mikael tracked the leading Jansson for much of the way, before stuffing him wide ending the third lap, the visitor almost falling. “Shades of Peter” was the comment on the terraces! This also ensured that Ronnie was through for second, and much disbelief followed from Wolves fans – although Mikael looked as bored as he does after any win!
Heat 11: Miskowiak, Lindgren, Andersen, Karlsson (f.rem), 58.99. 2-4, 35-31.
Magnus went out wide to chase the leading Miskowiak, but unfortunately went a little too wide and came down ending lap one, remounting to finish last. Freddie tried hard but locked up exiting the last bend, although he stayed ahead of Andersen.
Heat 12: Jansson, Pecyna, Skornicki, Doolan, 57.99. 3-3, 38-34.
There was an amusing moment before the start of this one, as Krys accidentally let his clutch out and shot through the tapes as Porky began to announce the line-up! As the green light was not yet on, he was not excluded, although he made an apologetic gesture to the referee! When the race got going Wolves’ two Poles rounded Doolan in one move for second and third, before clashing handlebars down the home straight – it looked as though Adam thought Doolan, and not Krys, was outside him. Jansson, meanwhile, had escaped for another win.
Heat 13: Max, Protasiewicz, Andersen, Lindgren (ret), 57.39. 3-3, 41-37.
Pepe made the most of a blatant jump start to lead, while Andersen almost took Freddie into the fence on the first turn, the clearly unhappy Swede slowing and pulling into the pits next time around. Meantime Mikael had rounded Pepe for the lead, and held on to win on what was now a decidedly slick surface.
Heat 14: Louis, Pecyna, Johnston, Doolan, 58.07. 3-3, 44-40.
Ipswich led from the start once again, only for Krys and Johno to power inside Doolan out of turn two. Doolan closed in on Johno on the last lap, but a shared heat was secure.
Heat 15: Max, Protasiewicz, Andersen, Lindgren, 57.56. 3-3, 47-43.
Ipswich needed a 5-1 to draw the match, but a very rapid Mikael ensured that they did not get near it, riding well to find the last few areas of grip close to the fence after taking the lead from Pepe starting lap two. Freddie stayed at the back throughout, almost slipping off on turn two second time around.
Five star ratings:
Weather: ***** Perfect, if a little too hot – I always have to moan about something, don’t I?
Track conditions: *** Fine for first half of match, but slickened off in familiar style later.
Attendance: ***** A very reasonable crowd.
Wolves’ performance: *** Perhaps we’ve been spoiled by the number of big home wins recently, but the Wolves only just held the lead throughout, and the bonus looks questionable.
Entertainment value: ***** Given the later track conditions, this was an excellent meeting, highlighted by Mikael’s move on Jansson.
Man of the Match: Just one man stood out this week – of course it’s Mikael Max.
Referee (Graham Reeve, I think!): **** One star knocked off for ignoring Pepe’s “anticipated” start in heat 13.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: ***** Increased his pace as the night went on.
Ronnie Correy: *** Desperately unlucky in heat 6.
Adam Skornicki: *** Only one doughnut this week!
Steve Johnston: *** Still does not look quite as quick as he could be.
Freddie Lindgren: ** Appeared to struggle with the track.
Magnus Karlsson: ** After performing beyond everyone’s expectations several times, anyone can have an off night!
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Second highest scorer, but not so many flying starts.
Ipswich certainly appear to be our “bogey” team this year, with the Wolves seemingly unable to beat them out of the starts. Let’s hope that the boys can pull off their first away win of 2005 this Wednesday at Arena-Essex – pies and doughnuts will be available in the Live Updates forum!
