Did this Wolves team really win by 24 points away from home last week? The inconsistencies of our 2005 team were shown magnificently in this match as Wolves delivered their worst home performance for a long time. Only Mikael, Freddie and Krys looked on the pace for most of the meeting, with the side gaining only one heat advantage all night – and that was a double tactical ride from Mikael, supported by Ronnie in his only decent ride of the day. The rest of the side looked a shadow of their usual selves, leading to much anger from Wolves fans and glee for the opposition’s large travelling contingent.
There was consternation before the start as it was announced Kylmo would ride for Coventry after all – as a guest! Now I do not know the rules 100% (this year, who does?) but surely a rider with no permanent British club is ineligible to guest, and guest appearances are only usually allowed for heat leader positions. It remains to be seen what will develop from this. Also, it was later discovered that Jonsson, who was on rider replacement, had ridden in Poland the previous day – interesting!
Anyway, this is not the place for controversy, so let’s review the action.
Coventry won the toss and took the inside gates.
Heat 1: Max, Kylmakorpi, Risager, Correy, 55.81. 3-3, 3-3.
Mikael led all the way to win in a very quick time, with the Coventry pair team-riding to keep a closing Ronnie behind.
Heat 2: Harris, Karlsson. Pecyna, Smolinski (fell), 57.30. 3-3, 6-6.
The Wolves and Bomber were together coming out of turn two, with Krys trying the outside of Bomber who flicked him wide dropping him to last. Smolinski fell at half distance and dropped out, while Krys could not make up any ground on Magnus or the victorious Bomber.
Heat 3: Risager, Janniro, Skornicki, Johnston (f.rem), 57.56. 1-5, 7-11.
Coventry led for the start, with Johno bizarrely sliding off on his own starting lap two, remounting for last – the track looked to be at fault. Perhaps it was the strange green substance spread over turns one and two?
Heat 4 (re-run): Nicholls, Lindgren, Pecyna, Smolinski, 58.44. 3-3, 10-14.
A messy first corner saw Nicholls lock up sharply, while behind Krys fell and the race was stopped. All four were allowed in the rerun, which saw Wolves completely miss the start only for both to pass Smolinski on lap one. Meantime Freddie tracked Nicholls all the way, with a last bend lunge just failing.
Heat 5 (re-run): Kylmakorpi, Johnston, Skornicki, Janniro (f.excl), 57.56. 3-3, 13-17.
Kylmo led as BJ tried the outside of Adam for second, with Johno joining the battle on lap two only for BJ to round both Wolves in one move. Starting lap three BJ went down while close to Adam, but the replay showed no contact and BJ was excluded. The rerun Kylmo simply pull further away from the Wolves throughout.
Heat 6: Nicholls, Harris, Max, Correy, 57.23. 1-5, 14-22.
Ronnie tried for the lead in the early stages, with Mikael in third, but both seemed to switch off on lap two allowing the visitors to take an easy 5-1.
Heat 7: Lindgren, Janniro, Risager, Karlsson, 57.64. 3-3, 17-25.
Freddie made Wolves’ first decent start since heat two, but Janniro led the first two laps until Freddie found grip on the inside to take the lead. Risager went inside Magnus for third on lap three.
Heat 8: Pecyna, Kylmakorpi, Smolinski, Correy (ret), 57.70. 3-3, 20-28.
Krys led all the way as Ronnie pressured Kylmo hard for second for three laps, only for his bike to break down once again starting the last lap.
Heat 9: Nicholls, Harris, Johnston, Skornicki, 57.25. 1-5, 21-33.
Coventry gated, with Johno trying briefly for second on lap one but to no avail.
Heat 10 (re-run): Max (double), Correy, Janniro, Risager (f.exc), 57.64. 8-1, 29-34.
Mikael was given the black and white helmet in order to try and recover the Wolves’ deficit, and it worked. Risager slid wide and fell on the first turn, staying down and raising his arm to the referee. His protests were futile as the race was stopped and the Dane was excluded. Mikael team-rode with Ronnie for the 8-1 in the rerun, for the only real high point of the night for Wolves fans.
Heat 11: Nicholls, Lindgren, Kylmakorpi, Karlsson, 58.99. 2-4, 31-38.
Freddie scrapped with the visitors in the drizzle for much of the way, before losing out to Nicholls on lap three. Magnus looked well out of it at the back.
Heat 12: Janniro, Harris, Pecyna, Skornicki, 59.59. 1-5, 32-43.
Coventry gated, and it was all over from then.
Heat 13: Max, Nicholls, Kylmakorpi, Lindgren (double), 57.62. 3-3, 35-46.
Mikael led from the start, while Freddie’s double ride yielded nothing despite him holding off Kylmo for two laps.
Heat 14: Risager, Smolinski, Pecyna, Johnston, 60.35. 1-5, 36-51.
Krys locked up on turn two to gift Coventry the lead and another 5-1, while Johno looked pathetically slow at the back.
Heat 15: Nicholls, Max, Kylmakorpi, Lindgren, 57.81. 2-4, 38-55.
Mikael pressured Nicholls on lap two, but the England skipper held on to win to the cheers of the visiting fans.
Five star ratings:
Weather: * Light rain throughout.
Track conditions: ** Despite being watered (with the obvious threat of rain!) before the start, the surface was very inconsistent.
Attendance: ***** The one plus point of the night.
Wolves’ performance: * I’ll put it plainly and simply – awful.
Entertainment value: *** Some reasonable racing in the first half of the match.
Man of the Match: Mikael Max takes it for being the highest scorer.
Referee: ***** Called all first bend decisions correctly.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: *** Did his expected job, and rode a good tactical ride.
Ronnie Correy: * Yet another breakdown – something surely needs to be done.
Adam Skornicki: * Only scored points as a result of falls.
Steve Johnston: * Only beat Adam all night, and barely looked interested – clearly the wrong attitude for a captain.
Freddie Lindgren: *** OK when he gated.
Magnus Karlsson: * Nowhere all night.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Pulled in his usual points.
The most important lesson to be learnt here is not to let one bad performance affect the team too much. They will doubtlessly be feeling depressed after this heavy defeat, but they still deserve as much support as possible for the rest of the season, and especially at table-topping Poole this Wednesday night. The sport of speedway is never all about winning, as this match shows, but any encouragement always helps the team psychologically – keep getting behind the Wolves through thick and thin.
