WOLVES 49 EASTBOURNE 41, ELITE LEAGUE B, MONDAY 18TH JULY
Parry’s International Wolves:
Mikael Max 3 2 3 2 2 =12
Ronnie Correy 0 1* 1* 0 =2+2
Steve Johnston F 0 1* 3 =4+1
David Howe 2 3 2 3 =10
Fredrik Lindgren 2 2* 2 T 1* =7+2
Magnus Karlsson 2* 2 1* 1 =6+2
Krzysztof Pecyna 3 0 3 1 1* =8+1
Eagles:
David Norris R/R 1* 2 3 0 =6+1
Adam Shields 2 1* 3 X 0 =6+1
Dean Barker 1* 1 0 1* 2 =5+2
Joonas Kylmakorpi 3 2 1 2 2 R =10
Nicki Pedersen 3 3 3 3 3 3 =18
Richard Hall 0 F 0 =0
Andrew Moore 1 1 0 0 0 =2
After the consternation surrounding the recent team changes, this win certainly lifted the spirits of may Wolves fans, with David proving any doubters wrong by showing that he is fully back to race fitness. Johno’s form was the only real concern of the night, but the rest of the Wolves pulled together well for a much-needed victory.
Eastbourne won the toss and took gates one and three.
Heat 1: Max, Shields, Barker, Correy, 55.49 (new track record). 3-3, 3-3.
The opener did not seem a particularly fast race, so it was a surprise to learn that Mikael had retaken the track record from the absent David Norris – a great way to begin his 400th Wolves meeting, and after being sent wide on turn one by Barker. Ronnie stayed fourth all the way, despite closing in on Barker towards the end.
Heat 2: Pecyna, Karlsson, Moore, Hall, 57.62. 5-1, 8-4.
Krys led from the gate and held on despite locking up on turn two.
Heat 3: Kylmakorpi, Howe, Barker, Johnston (fell), 56.93. 2-4, 10-8.
Kylmo led all the way with David trying the inside but settling for second. Johno looked slow, and slid out wide on turn four to hit the fence and fall all on his own.
Heat 4: Pedersen, Lindgren, Moore, Pecyna, 56.72. 2-4, 12-12.
Nicki led from the gate, with Krys failing to make progress after missing the start, and losing out to Moore on lap three.
Heat 5: Howe, Kylmakorpi, Shields, Johnston, 56.86. 3-3, 15-15.
Johno gated but was quickly passed by Kylmo, who led only for David to swoop around him on the home straight, going on to silence his critics with a fine win. Johno slipped back behind Shields on lap two and looked hopelessly slow at the back.
Heat 6: Pedersen, Max, Correy, Hall (fell), 56.03. 3-3, 18-18.
Nicki led lap one until Mikael brilliantly took him wide on turn four, but Nicki daringly swept round him on turn two to retake the lead, while Hall fell on turn four and retired to the centre. Mikael chased hard around the outside line, but on the last turn Hall was still sitting on the inner kerb as Mikael went for the white line, meaning that Mikael could not lean into the turn and had to shut off. I’ve certainly never seen anything like this before, and it could have presented a very dangerous situation.
Heat 7: Pecyna, Lindgren, Kylmakorpi, Barker, 57.13. 5-1, 23-19.
Freddie went inside Kylmo for second on the first lap, and held off the Finn to complete the 5-1.
Heat 8: Shields, Karlsson, Correy, Moore, 58.09. 3-3, 26-22.
Shields outdragged Ronnie off the line, with Magnus then taking second leaving Ronnie to battle Moore for third. Ronnie eventually took Moore wide on turn two for the place.
Heat 9: Pedersen, Howe, Johnston, Hall, 57.79. 3-3, 29-25.
Johno gated but ran wide on the first turn, dropping to third and leaving Nicki to head David home.
Heat 10 (re-run): Max, Kylmakorpi, Barker, Correy, 57.33. 3-3, 32-28.
Ronnie appeared to jump the start and the red lights were on straight away. Predictably, he was last away in the rerun, which saw Mikael round Kylmo for the win. Ronnie just lost out to Barker for third.
Heat 11 (re-run): Pedersen, Lindgren, Karlsson, Shields (exc, unfair riding), 58.10. 3-3, 35-31.
All four riders were close early on, with Eastbourne holding the advantage until Magnus rounded Shields. The Aussie then showed the effects of being Nicki Pedersen’s team partner by sending Magnus flying into the air fence on turn three, also going in himself for a stoppage. Shields was rightly excluded, and the interval was called early to allow the track staff to re-inflate the fence. The rerun saw Freddie go inside both Nicki and Magnus on turn two only for Nicki to retake him, holding on to win despite Freddie’s best efforts.
Heat 12: Johnston, Barker, Pecyna, Moore, 59.09. 4-2, 39-33.
Barker looked set to win for three laps of this one, with Krys taking Moore for third on lap three. Going into the final lap Johno’s pressure paid off as he took the slowing Barker for lead and the win.
Heat 13 (re-run): Pedersen, Max, Pecyna, Shields, Lindgren (exc, tapes), 57.35. 3-3, 42-36.
Freddie ploughed into the tapes on the first attempt, and Krys was brought in for the rerun. There was some comedy after the stoppage, as the tapes had caught in Shields’ back wheel and the track staff showed no interest in helping him remove them! The rerun was Nicki all the way, with Mikael closing in late on.
Heat 14: Howe, Kylmakorpi, Karlsson, Moore, 58.64. 4-2, 46-38.
Eastbourne tried to team ride behind David until Kylmo locked up on lap three, slowing Moore and allowing Magnus to challenge. Magnus went inside Moore on the last lap down the back straight for third, while David took his second win.
Heat 15: Pedersen, Max, Lindgren, Kylmakorpi (ret), 57.59. 3-3, 49-41.
Nicki led all the way to complete an excellent six-ride maximum, while behind Freddie took third on turn two, with Kylmo later slowing and retiring.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** A perfect evening for speedway.
Track conditions: **** A bit dry towards the end.
Attendance: *** There seemed to be as many people on the centre green as the terraces at times!
Wolves’ performance: *** A fairly average session for most of the lads.
Entertainment value: *** A fair bit of good racing, and a little controversy.
Man of the Match: Difficult choice this one, but I’ll go for David Howe for his impressive return to action.
Referee (Dave Dowling): ***** Called everything correctly.
Rider ratings:
Mikael Max: **** New track record, but failed to beat Nicki.
Ronnie Correy: ** Still doesn’t look up to scratch.
Steve Johnston: * One good ride from the captain is not enough to cover up three awful ones, so one star it is.
David Howe: **** A fine return to action.
Fredrik Lindgren: *** Rode well, but hit the tapes.
Magnus Karlsson: *** Looked quicker than of late around the Green.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Good when he gated.
A busy period on the road follows for the Wolves, with a visit to Belle Vue tomorrow (Wednesday) night, and the return to Coventry on Friday. Hope to see you there to get behind the Wolves, and let’s hope for some more Arena-style riding from the team.
