Belle Vue 58 Wolves 38. Elite League B. 20th July 05.
Belle Vue
Kenneth Bjerre 3 3 1 3 3 = 13
Andy Smith 0 1 2* 3 = 6+1
Joe Screen 1* 2 3 2* = 8+2
Jason Lyons 2 0 2* 2 = 6+1
Jason Crump 3 3 3 0 1 = 10
Rusty Harrison 2* 0 1 1* = 4+2
Simon Stead 3 2* 3 3 = 11+1
Wolves
Scott Nicholls (G) 2 3 2^ 2 1* 0 = 10=1
Ronnie Correy 1* 1 0 0 = 2+1
Steve Johnston 0 1* 0 1 = 2+1
David Howe 3 2 2 6^ = 13
Freddie Lindgren 1 2 1 4^ 2 = 10
James Grieves 0 F 0 = 0
Krzysztof Pecyna 1 F/X 0 F/X = 1
Pre-match talk on the Grassy Knoll mainly involved Sugababe and her attempts to see Freddie in the changing room (she even had binoculars in her bag). Also noted was the fact that the PA system was slightly improved, and from the Wolves perspective was good to hear the Belle Vue announcer relaying details of Mikael's accident.
So, how would the Wolves perform without Mikael and Magnus?..................Scott Nicholls in as guest for Mikael and James Grieves thrown in at the deep end for his seasonal debut.
Belle Vue won the toss and chose gates 2 and 4.
Heat 1:
Bjerre, NICHOLLS, CORREY, Smith 59.1 3-3, 3-3
Aces gated on a 5-1 but both Wolves easily passed Smith, who fell at the end of Lap 1.
Heat 2:
Stead, Harrison, PECYNA, GRIEVES 59.8 5-1, 8-4
First attempt James touched the tapes and Krys was warned for rolling. James therefore off 15 metres. Second attempt, from the gate, well spaced out.
Heat 3:
HOWE, Lyons, Screen, JOHNSTON 59.8 3-3, 11-7
Screen gated but David took him on the inside coming out of turn 2 lap 1. Lyons passed Screen late on, Johnno nowhere to be seen (Adam might well have made this a 5-1, sorry couldn't resist!!!)
Heat 4:
Crump, Stead, LINDGREN, PECYNA (f/x) 59.1 5-1, 16-8
First running the Aces gate. At end of lap 1 Krys lifted, fell and slid under the air fence. Second running Crump gated but Freddie was alongside Stead, however Stead took Freddie so wide his race was effectively over there.
Heat 5:
NICHOLLS, Screen, CORREY, Lyons 59.4 2-4, 18-12
Screen gated but Scottie flew round his outside, and drew away for an impressive win. Ronnie chased hard in 3rd.
Heat 6:
Bjerre, LINDGREN, Smith, GRIEVES 59.2 4-2, 22-14
James fell under pressure from Smith at the end of lap 1. Bjerre won easily, but Smith was all over Freddie.
Heat 7:
Crump, HOWE, JOHNSTON, Harrison 59.0 3-3, 25-17
From the gate but Johnno struggling in 3rd, only just holding Harrison off.
Heat 8:
Stead, Smith, NICHOLLS, CORREY 60.1 5-2, 30-19
The question has to be asked here, what the hell was Mr Adams playing at? A track where passing is non-existent, and possibly the best reserve in the league and Mr Adams puts Scottie off 15 metres???
Anyway, Aces gated, Scottie took a lap to close up (as you would expect) then appeared to be held up by Ronnie for a lap. Personally I think the tactical genius got it wrong, and if the meeting wasn't lost before this heat, it sure was now!!
Heat 9:
Screen, Lyons, LINDGREN, PECYNA 60.5 5-1, 35-20
Aces gate again, Freddie looks quicker this time but can find no way past Lyons. Krys had mechanical gremlins at the back.
Heat 10:
Smith, HOWE, Bjerre, JOHNSTON 59.9 4-2, 39-22
The Wolves gate! However, a really tight first turn took Smith past both Wolves and Johnno was again lacking as Bjerre had taken him before the 3rd bend lap 1.
Heat 11:
Crump, NICHOLLS, Harrison, CORREY 59.9 4-2, 43-24
Crump gated but Scottie didn't, however a fabulous first corner saw Scottie move into second. Ronnie was comfortable in third when a puncture floored him on the second lap.
Heat 12:
Stead, Screen, JOHNSTON, GRIEVES 61.0 5-1, 48-25
From the gate. James well adrift.
Heat 13:
Bjerre, LINDGREN, NICHOLLS, Crump 60.0 3-5, 51-30
Freddie given the black and white helmet (again off gate 4?). The Wolves gated but Bjerre picked off Freddie quite easily, then as Scottie was looking for Freddie he must have thought he was in second, seemed to slow at the end of lap 1, but it was Bjerre that said thankyou very much. Scottie chased hard, so hard in fact that the Wolves contingent thought he had forgot to let Freddie past on the line. Official verdict however was Freddie second.
Heat 14:
HOWE, Lyons, Harrison, PECYNA (f/x) 60.6 3-6, 54-36
David on a tactical. Gates and flies away, however Krys fell and slid under the air fence at the end of lap 1. In the re-run David capped a superb night's work by again gating and riding off into the sunset.
Heat 15:
Belle Vue win the toss and choose gates 2 and 4. Crump off 2, Bjerre off 4.
PA goes with Scottie off 3, Freddie off 1.
Bjerre, LINDGREN, Crump, NICHOLLS 59.1 4-2, 58-38
Bjerre gated and won comfortably, but there was probably the only good race of the night going on behind. Freddie was second, with Crump all over his back wheel, and Scott very close to Crump throughout. The fact that no-one managed to pass summed up the night. It really was a gater's paradise!
RATINGS
Weather*** a balmy evening but probably not conducive to good racing.
Track* no shale, therefore no grip. no water at any point through the night.....is this becoming the new Wimborne Rd??? only got one star as the tractors were out on a regular basis.
Attendence** certainly not supported like Wolves are
Wolves performance**Wolves always get beaten at Kirky Lane, but this was basically a 3-man effort.....again!!!
Entertainment value..........yes, NO STARS.......it was THAT bad!!! As Pieman said, if Crump can't pass at Kirky Lane it shows you how bad the track is!!!
Man of the Match.....head and shoulders (even above Scott Nicholls)....DAVID HOWE. He is again showing the kind of form we know he is capable of.
Referee*** didn't catch his name, and he had an easy night, but still think he called Heat 13 result wrong, as did most people on the far side.
RIDER RATINGS
Scott Nicholls*** effort was there all night, but from 6 rides I would fully have expected a paid 14 out of him.
Ronnie Correy** must be the unluckiest rider currently riding in the Elite League.
Steve Johnston NO STARS (Adam would have had one star just for turning up). Johnno's 2+1 was obtained by beating Rusty Harrison and a Krys machine failure. NOT GOOD ENOUGH SKIPPER!!!
David Howe***** this is the David Howe we should see week in week out. He looked at ease on his bike, and was FAST. Well done David!!!
Freddie Lindgren*** unusual for Freddie not to take a heat win, but did as much as could be expected in the dreaded number 5 position.
James Grieves* really up against it on his seasonal Elite League debut.
Krzysztof Pecyna* this guy was winning us meetings a few meetings ago. What's happened to his gating skills?
A difficult meeting at any time of the season, wasn't helped by the loss of Mikael and Magnus, however I have seen Wolves ride Kirky Lane better than they did tonight. Am surprised neither Scott or Freddie could manage a heat win, and amazed to see Krys at the back each time the tapes went up. Wasn't helped by one of the worst tracks I have seen. There was simply no grip and the racing was little more than processional all night. Aces fans loved it, but if that's their idea of entertainment it shows why the crowd was quite small. Belle Vue do look a strong side, and I would fancy them to beat Poole in the play-off final, however with tracks prepared like this, surely the fans will dwindle away from the sport.
The bonus point is now out of the question, but can we put a dent in their title ambitions on Monday?
See you there,
