Wolves fans made the short trip down the M6 to Brandon firmly clutching their rain off tickets from the postponed meeting way back on April 15th. Rumour has it that CVS had asked Nicki Pedersen to guest for the injured Mikael Max, but by the day of the meeting it was announced that Lee Richardson was the man. So it has come to this¡K Lee Bloody Richardson riding at number one for Wolves. Lee Richardson riding in a Coventry v Wolves match¡K for Wolves! Lee Richardson? Oh.
Oh yes, and James Grieves gets another outing to replace the injured Magnus Karlsson as Wolves try to defend a 3 point lead for the bonus, though how you defend a 3 point lead in speedway escapes me so I don¡¦t really know why I said that but you know what I mean. Anyway, here¡¦s the action.
Heat 1 - Lee Richardson ; Joonas Kylmakorpi ; Billy Janniro ; Ronnie Correy ; (3-3)(3-3)
Our Lee makes a superb start and wins easily with Ronnie well adrift at the back. Maybe he¡¦s not so bad after all. Coventry line up for heat 1 with riders 9 and 10¡K another inspired speedway rule change!
Heat 2 - James Grieves ; Chris Harris ; Martin Smolinski ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; (3-3)(6-6)
Wolves fly out of the start in front. Referee Robbie Perks has obviously seen a few Wolves matches and assumes the gate must be playing up or something and calls it back. Guess what? We do it again ¡V a Wolves 5-1 into the 1st bend but KP simply isn¡¦t quick enough and is mugged by both home riders who almost hit the back of him in their rush to get past. James doesn¡¦t look particularly fast either, but rides an excellent race to block Chris Harris for a surprising win.
Heat 3 - Joonas Kylmakorpi ; Morten Risager ; Steve Johnston ; David Howe ; (5-1)(11-7)
David¡¦s off gate 4 and takes a big shove going into the first bend and disappears behind the air fence. He takes a while to get up but there is no word on his fitness. In fact there is no word on anything from our vantage point on the first bend because we are being tortured by the worst loudspeaker that has ever been invented. It¡¦s pitched at the same level as a whole squadron of RAF jets taking off three feet from your left ear the morning after you¡¦ve had 18 pints of Badger¡¦s Knob bitter in the local real ale pub. No idea what was being announced because the sound was so distorted that Peter York sounded like he might know what he was talking about. Sorry, I¡¦m easily distracted, where were we? In the rerun, the Coventry pair gate and have the easiest of 5-1¡¦s with neither Steve ¡§Elliot¡¨ Johnston or David ¡§Howie¡¨ Howe in contention.
Heat 4 - Scott Nicholls ; Martin Smolinski ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; Fredrik Lindgren ; (5-1)(16-8)
Another embarrassingly easy 5-1 for Coventry as Freddie looks really unhappy at the back, missing the start and making several mistakes during the race. When¡¦s Lee out again?
Heat 5 - Lee Richardson ; Joonas Kylmakorpi ; Morten Risager ; Ronnie Correy ; (3-3)(19-11)
Here he is! ¡§Come on Lee ¡V I¡¦ve always loved you¡¨ Another easy win for our guest but Ronnie is well off the pace again and starts staring down at his bike as early as lap 2 this time.
Heat 6 - Morten Risager ; Billy Janniro ; James Grieves ; Fredrik Lindgren(F) ; (5-1)(24-12)
Risager is nominated as RR in this one and we have a delay to allow him extra time, during which he strolls from the pits all the way to the starting gate to check out gate 4. Problem is, he¡¦s not off gate 4 until his next programmed ride in heat 9 and it is soon clear that he doesn¡¦t even know he¡¦s in the next heat! Never mind, we all stand there bored while Morten strolls aimlessly around Brandon and the Abominable Showman Peter York keeps us all entertained with his own unique brand of childish inane drivel. To be fair, childish inane drivel is quite good compared to York. Did you know that he wrote a forward for Hans Nielsen¡¦s book where he manage to mention in the space of a few words how much he hated working at Monmore Green because the fans were so vile to him? Ever since I¡¦ve read that, I always bring a large stock of rotten fruit to Monmore on Monday night¡¦s just in case he turns up again and I¡¦d advise you to do the same.
Oh sorry, the speedway! Another very easy 5-1 for the irritating buzzy lot, Freddie falls in 3rd place after he appears to have a bike failure, possibly a chain, but he looked very unlikely to pass the home riders at that stage.
Heat 7 - Chris Harris ; Scott Nicholls ; Steve Johnston ; David Howe ; (5-1)(29-13)
This really is embarrassing. Nicholls has time to stop for an ice cream on the 2nd bend while he waits for Harris to join him at the front who sweeps round Elliot with little resistance from our skipper. David is making Johnno look fast tonight.
Heat 8 - Martin Smolinski ; Billy Janniro ; James Grieves ; Ronnie Correy(R) ; (5-1)(34-14)
KP is scheduled off gate 1 in this one but is taken out again. Interesting¡K which is more than can be said for the race. Ronnie stops at the back and is clearly unhappy with the bike again.
Heat 9 - Joonas Kylmakorpi ; Fredrik Lindgren (Tactical Ride) ; Morten Risager ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; (4-4)(38-18)
We¡¦ve had precious little racing and passing so far. Is it the track or the fact that Wolves are just so awful? It¡¦s the latter¡K Freddie makes a good start but Eunice rides a very wide line and finds a lot of grip to fly past him. An excellent move.
Heat 10 - Scott Nicholls ; Steve Johnston ; David Howe ; Billy Janniro(F) ; (3-3)(41-21)
Finally we get a bit of fight and aggression from the Wolves riders! David drives hard underneath Janniro going into the 1st bend and Johnno dives through the gap into 2nd. David still looks to be struggling for pace but Janniro¡¦s wild attempts to pass him end with him in the airfence on the last bend.
Heat 11 - Scott Nicholls ; Lee Richardson (Tactical Ride) ; Chris Harris ; James Grieves ; (4-4)(45-25)
After a long and painful interval where the speaker on our bend resists all the debris we can throw at it and carries on pumping out the most unspeakable sounds. I¡¦m convinced that a family of badgers have crawled into the amplifier and died a painful death, or perhaps it¡¦s just Peter York¡¦s unique brand of entertainment again. In the pits, there is frantic work on David and Johnno¡¦s bikes but Ronnie is packing his stuff away already¡K he¡¦s withdrawn from this one as Nicholls outgates our Lee at the front while Harris finds a way past the battling Grievesy at the back.
Heat 12 - James Grieves ; Steve Johnston ; Morten Risager ; Martin Smolinski(R) ; (1-5)(46-30)
What the &*^%$¡¦s going on here? A Wolves 5-1! Johnno rides an aggressive first bend as Grievesy winds the power on all the way around the fence on the 3rd and 4th bend to emerge in front. A superb ride from the Scot who takes the win followed by a rejuvenated (maybe) Johnston.
Heat 13 - Lee Richardson ; Scott Nicholls ; Billy Janniro ; Fredrik Lindgren ; (3-3)(49-33)
Two races in one as Richardson holds off Nicholls as Freddie just fails to find a way past Janniro at the back.
Heat 14 - Chris Harris ; David Howe ; Joonas Kylmakorpi ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; (4-2)(53-35)
David rides another more aggressive 1st bend but Harris has the lead by the 3rd bend. Pecyna again looks lost at the back.
Heat 15 - Lee Richardson ; Scott Nicholls ; Steve Johnston ; Joonas Kylmakorpi ; (2-4)(55-39)
Richardson again outpaces his British team mate with Johnno again looking much faster in 3rd.
Five Star Ratings
Weather **** Dry and quite warm.
Track Conditions *** Looked pretty good from the terraces.
Attendance *** The stand was pretty full though why there was an ice cream van on the 3rd bend to serve the 5 people stood there is a mystery.
Wolves Performance * If you take out the excellent Lee Richardson and the battling James Grieves (who aren¡¦t regular Wolves) then our regular riders were dreadful. On paper there is little to choose between these two sides but they are two clubs heading in different directions with Coventry heading for the playoffs and Wolves season falling away alarmingly.
Entertainment Value * I can¡¦t believe I paid money to be tortured by the sound system and humiliated by Coventry. I suppose it could have been worse ¡V I could have paid twice! ƒº
Referee: Robbie Perks. *** Not much to do really. He could have put Risager on 2 minutes while he was walking the track though!
Rider Ratings
Man of the Match: Mr Lee gets the vote, but I suppose we can¡¦t really award it to a guest so James Grieves gets it for sheer effort. Otherwise I¡¦d probably give it to Mikael Max for (hopefully) being on the road to recovery!
Lee Richardson: ***** I¡¦ve always admired his 100% effort and thrilling riding. Seriously he was an excellent guest and saved us from total humiliation (just).
Ronnie: zero. His season is certainly at crisis point. Whether it is him or the bikes only he can say but it¡¦s simply not working.
Johnno: ** Not sure what happened after his 2nd ride but he looked a different rider in his next three. That¡¦s encouraging but we were already 20 points behind at that stage and it was simply too late.
David: * I¡¦m not aware of what effect his first race fall had but he looked short of pace all night. Battled hard in his last two races but by then the match was lost.
Freddie: * I have great sympathy for him riding in the number 5 position which is a disaster for Wolves riders this season but he had a very disappointing meeting. You wouldn¡¦t expect him to lose to Smolinski, Risager and Janniro¡K
James: **** A battling performance from out number 8. Put our regular team members to shame.
KP: zero. Well off the pace on a track which you would expect to suit him perfectly. I understand he moves into the top five for August¡K
Verdict: CVS and Peter Adams must have left the stadium worried men. Don¡¦t be fooled by the scoreline, this was a terrible effort from the Wolves who were outclassed by their local rivals¡K and don¡¦t forget they did the same to us at Monmore a few weeks ago. A poor showing at Belle Vue was put down to the effect of Mikael¡¦s terrible injury the previous night but we should seek no excuses for this one. Richardson and Grieves scored more than we could have hoped from the Karlsson brothers but our regular team members were awful. Monday¡¦s televised match with high flying Belle Vue looks a very worrying prospect and our (very) faint playoff hopes would be extinguished with another home loss. Unhappy days ¡V but we can only hope the lads can bounce back on Monday.
