In all honesty as I entered the stadium I really didn't know what to expect from the evenings racing. After the defeat by Belle Vue some 2 weeks ago,a missing Monday and watching a dominant Poland trounce the rest of the world(even put together would never have beaten 'em) my speedway emotions were somewhat in turmoil.
I was initially exciting by the prospect of a very favourable guest,Scotty Nicholls. His execution of the Monmore track some 4 weeks earlier gave me a timely boost only for 1) the ever dependiable Track shop Dave not having an available piccy of Scotty(a promise to my smitten niece of the popular Brit, that I would get a signed picy of him) and 2) The missing Brit from pit area and track inspecting Wolfs.Apparently his van had broken down on the A14 and was stranded.Jonah had arranged for the collection of machinery and British captain.
My fears were soon put to bed some 5 mins prior to parade when a visible bike bearing the infamous 'Ham Racing' could been seen from the terracing. My,once again poor Sweepstake draw of Ryan 'Pants' Sullivan was forgotton...we had our guest,Ronnie was in a position in the teams he'd longed for.....let the racing begin..............
Swindon won the toss and elected to bat first....gates 1 and 3
Heat 1
Adams,Nicholls,Davidsson,Pecyna (f) EX 2-4,2-4 56.73
First running Krzy made a grate start from the outside only to spin and fall on entering turn 2,correct decision in excluding the rider in blue.Re-run Aussie made the gate,Scotty looked a little sluggish out the start, perhaps events earlier on the A14 played its part.
Heat 2
Correy,Alden,Karlsson,Allen 4-2,6-6 58.12
Great start to the reserve berth for the Rocket, had to hunt down the impressive gating Alden, made his 'swoop' coming out of bend 2 on the 2nd lap, vintage.
Heat3
Howe,Gjedde,Johnston,Ljung 4-2,10-8 57.95
I love this bloke-what an entertainer,Charlie will always give his all, whatever the track, bloody nice bloke too. However, his style of racing will always give you a chance and fair play to Dave.Dave flew out of gate 2 but outside of him,Charlie made his move on turns 3/4 and went, however turns 1/2 would prove to be Charlie's nightmare for the rest of the night. On the 3rd lap he bucked and headed for the tractor,Dave took his chance with aplomb, sweeping underneath with style and power...thankyou.David is looking quick
Heat 4
Richardson,Lindgren,Correy,Alden 3-3,13-11
Freddie pushed Richardson all the way,at times he appeared quicker than the in-form Brit, but couldn't quite get the required line to overtake.Ronnie after a poor gate made a good move on the inside of Alden to take a worthy point.
Heat 5
Howe,Adams,Davidsson,Johnston 3-3,16-14 56.64
David's hard work was undone by some sloppy riding by the captain losing what should have been a comfortable 3rd place.Adams is no mug to this game, but he had no answer to some clever and defensive riding from David.
Heat 6
Nicholls,Richardson,Pecyna,Allen 4-2,20-16 56.89
This bloke wants to be in Wolves colours in 2006.What a move swooped on Richardson before showing a quick turn of pace to come underneath his fellow Brit on turn 4 lap 2.Wasn't interested in the minor placing, top drawer speedway.
Heat 7
Lindgren,Ljung,Gjedde,Karlsson 3-3,23-19 56.75
A fair but very aggresive move by young Freddie gave Charlie nowhere to go on the back straight of lap 1,Charlie moved outside to challege Freddie but he'd gone.Sorry but Mags looks off the pace tonight, perhaps his injury is playing its part.
Heat 8
Davidsson,Correy,Pecyna,Alden 3-3,26-22 57.62
Alden appeared to jump the start,Ref Allan let it go which benefited the Swede from gate 4,the rest is history as they say!
Heat 9
Howe,Richardson,Johnston Allen (f) EX 4-2,30-24 56.64
Gating at its best. Not once, not twice but 3 times a lady. After Allen had bailed out on the first run, then decided to give Bartercard some lengthy advertising with another spill David produced some of the greatest gating i have seen and perhaps messers Rickardsson,Pedersen and Crump would have been proud of.If you weren't there to see it,tough, you should have been.Really pleased for the chap, looks well on the pace.Credit also to the skipper for this one,was on Richardson tail all the way, sniffing for a chance.
Heat 10
Nicholls,Gjedde,Pecyna,Ljung 4-2,34-26 56.0
"Sign him up,whatever the cost,he knows this is a better club"
Heat 11
Lindgren,Adams,Karlsson,Davidsson 4-2,38-28 57.01
To beat Leigh Adams in the Elite League is always an achievement,BUT to beat him over 5 laps is very rare, who will do it again this season.....my money is on no-one!!!!!!He rarely makes mistakes once in the lead, but credit to Freddie to perhaps forcing an error out of this talent from Mildura.Well done Fred!
Heat 12
Correy,Johnston,Ljung,Alden 5-1,43-29 57.52
Confidence,confidence,confidence....tell that to Ronnie tonight,he has so much of it,what transformation.I wasn't around to see Ronnie in his prime, but I wager he never got so close to the boards then as he did in this one tonight.A classic move from 3rd to 1st in a move, great entertainment......Thanks Ron! Jonno gets a dubious call for 2nd....but who cares! the bloke is down right now and could do with it,perhaps his change to 'tractor sized' tyres helped with the close call!!!!!!
Heat 13
Nicholls,Adams T/R,Richardson,Lindgren E/F 3-5,46-34 56.48
the nemesis of heats for Wolves,BUT NOT tonight, cheers Scotty, quality overtake on bend 2,wound it on,kept it on and went away.Gee this bloke could have turned up,took his money and gone, but no,a genuine racer....who cares what colours he wears week in week out this bloke was born to entertain and he certainly does. You can have Beckham,Rooney,Ferdinand,Lampard even Emile Heskey on their millions, but no thanks.....GET HIM IN!!!!!
Heat 14
Howe,Correy,Gjedde T/R,Alden 5-1,51-36 57.03
I think this heat was the heat of the season for me.2 Wolves boys, for differing reasons coming through their own personal problematic season and showing some blistering form.David looks quick tonight, even had to work to get around Ronnie.Well done boys very proud.
Heat 15
Adams,Howe,Richardson,Nicholls E/F 2-4,53-40 57.47
Who cares, the won has been completed, the bonus point put to bed.Scotty's bike decided it had had enough and seized, who would deny this engine its moment of peace,David to his credit appeared in the final heat of the night and gave his all.Adams had long gone, but the little rat got all over Richardson and pounced on the line to take a deserved 2nd spot.A maximum he deserved, but nice to see Dave's name on page 366 of Ceefax as Wolves top point scorer of the night.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather **** beautiful early on,went a little chilly late, but hey it is August
Track **** Grip where needed, a little slimy early, but gave some great racing conditions
Attendance***Ok considering its the school hols, even Lawt on his hols!!!!!
Wolves Performance****some great racing from the boys,David,Ronnie and Freddie especially, well on the pace, good guest booking
Entertainment*****BLOODY GREAT
Man of the Match: This is very tough,Scott performed superbly and I an very grateful for his true professionalism to the sport. Its got to be between David and Ronnie tonight, because of there problems encountered, but it goes to David Howe by a very short-head.
Referee:Ronnie Allan:**** held the tapes consistantly all night,no major decisions to make
Rider Ratings:
Scott Nicholls *** Top quality No1,we know Mikey won't be back in 2006,I would be more than happy to see him move further up the M6
Krzysztof Pecyna**Needs a fews rides at this tough position. If he can stay on and get past turn 2 in ht 1 i'm sure he will adapt.Give him time.
Steve Johnston*Tough times for the skipper, doesn't need moronic boos during his post match interview,at the end of the day he still wears OUR colours so we need to get behind him.Yes,I believe Adam would be a better selection, but he's not here at the moment,so hopefully Jonno can turn the corner.Put in some extra laps after,he wants to do well.
David Howe:****Welcome back son, keep it up,we need you now more than ever
Fredrik Lindgren:***Always on the pace, maybe his experience of recent weeks will help him adapt to this tough position in the team.I've every confidence in the lad.One day he'll repeat his Heat 15 antics of Peterborough a few weeks ago
Magnus Karlsson**perhaps not fully fit, showed at times
Ronnie Correy:***Close call between Ron and David, forgive me Ronnie for giving it to Dave.Really pleased to see such a beaming smile on Ronnie's face upon his return to the pits, top bloke
Well the Posh on Wednesday,Eastbourne Friday. Two really tough away meetings before Oxford visit the Green next Monday.Messers Nicholls,PK and Loram will be honourable Wulfs over the next fews days, riders i gladly will love to see in 2006.We shall see.Great evenings entertainment.
Cheers
