Wolves win 94-92 on aggregate.
The scoreline does not fully reflect just how close-fought this fixture was, with the lead swapping repeatedly throughout. If only Wolves had not lost David, whose seems to be cursed every time he rides at Peterborough, we may well have pulled this one off. The teams were never more than four points apart for the first 13 races as Wolves put in a real team effort, but two 1-5s in the last two heats saw them slip back slightly, although the bonus was safe. Lukas Dryml’s new position at reserve certainly paid dividends – when was the last time an Elite League reserve scored a full five-ride maximum?
Peterborough won the toss and took gates two and four.
Heat 1: Nicholls, P Karlsson, Pecyna, Bager, 59.8. 2-4, 2-4.
The Wolves took everyone by surprise by making a flying start, with Krys holding out PK until lap two, doing well to hold off Bager and put Wolves into the lead.
Heat 2: L Dryml, Correy, M Karlsson, Davidsson, 61.1. 3-3, 5-7.
Magnus gated but Lukas took him for the lead on the back straight (if there is such a thing at Peterborough!), with Ronnie displaying form far better than his usual Showground performances to come from last to second.
Heat 3 (re-run): Ermolenko, Johnston, Howe, Jensen (excl), 59.9. 3-3, 8-10.
Sam went inside David and Jesper out of the first turn to lead, before David’s Alwalton jinx struck yet again as Jesper calmly took his front wheel away sending him crashing hard into the turn four fence. It looked serious at first but David was eventually up and walking back to the pits. Jesper was rightfully excluded, and the rerun saw Sam hold off Johno all the way. David was a fair way behind in third, and withdrew after the race having taken a knock on the head in the crash.
Heat 4: L Dryml, Lindgren, A Dryml, Correy, 60.5. 4-2, 12-12.
This heat may have been sponsored by the Muffin Oven of Whittlesey, but the action was far from half-baked. Lukas went inside the fast-starting Freddie for the lead and pulled away as Ronnie tried valiantly to hold off Ales, but lost out exiting the last turn to concede third right on the line. D’ough!
Heat 5: Nicholls, Jensen, Pecyna, Ermolenko (ret), 60.5. 2-4, 14-16.
Sam’s bike failed on the startline, and for a second it looked as if he was not going to leave the track. Jesper had noticed this, and the setting sun shining on the red stop lights may well have confused him, as he slowed at turn three giving Scott the only invitation he needed to blast through into the lead. Krys kept up for third, and Wolves were back in the lead.
Heat 6: P Karlsson, Lindgren, Bager, M Karlsson, 60.8. 4-2, 18-18.
The setting sun had by now dipped behind the grandstand and the fans on the hummock were able to see properly at last. Freddie held the early lead with Bager applying most of the pressure, only for PK to go inside both of them on lap two.
Heat 7: A Dryml, Johnston, Correy, Davidsson, 60.3. 3-3, 21-21.
Ronnie gated but went wide on the first turn, allowing Ales and Johno through.
Heat 8: L Dryml, Correy, Bager, Pecyna, 61.5. 4-2, 25-23.
The Muffin Oven were heat sponsors once again, and a close early scrap saw Ronnie lead until taken wide at turn four by Lukas. Bagel and Krys looked slightly stale in the closing laps.
Heat 9: Lindgren, Jensen, M Karlsson, Ermolenko (ret), 61.8. 2-4, 27-27.
Sam led the first lap until his bike died once again, handing Freddie the lead, and he defended well from Jesper to take a great win.
Heat 10: P Karlsson, Johnston, Bager, Correy, 60.9. 4-2, 31-29.
PK predictably led all the way, but Johno put in a good effort to chase down Bager and rounded the Dane on lap two.
Heat 11: A Dryml, Nicholls, Pecyna, Davidsson, 60.2. 3-3, 34-32.
From the gate, with Nicholls gradually closing in on PK but just failing to catch him, tasting his first defeat of the evening.
Heat 12: L Dryml, Johnston, Correy, Jensen, 61.5. 3-3, 37-35.
Peterborough gated only for Ronnie to burst into the lead, but there would be no stopping Lukas who took over at turn three. Jesper tried to follow only for Ronnie to take him very wide and allow Johno inside both of them.
Heat 13: P Karlsson, Nicholls, A Dryml, Lindgren, 60.5. 4-2, 41-37.
PK used the grass to go inside Scott on turn two for the lead, with Ales taking second on lap two. A lap later Scott repeated PK’s use of the “Jason Crump line” around turn two to take second and keep the gap to four points. Could Wolves pull off a huge shock?……
Heat 14: L Dryml, Ermolenko, Correy, M Karlsson, 62.2. 5-1, 46-38.
……Err, no! Ronnie tried to take Sam wide on the first turn but the ex-Wolf wound it on to use the grip (yes, there was some there!) and take second behind Lukas, who completed his maximum.
Heat 15: A Dryml, P Karlsson, Johnston, Lindgren, 61.2. 5-1, 51-39.
Freddie looked slightly put out to be nominated for yet another heat 15 ahead of Scott, and in the race it was Peterborough all the way despite Johno’s efforts, leaving a scoreline which flattered the home side slightly.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: ***** Excellent, if a little windy (and not because of the Muffin Oven!)
Track conditions: **** Surprisingly good for Peterborough, but slightly dusty.
Attendance: * There seemed to be more Wolves fans than Panthers fans in attendance.
Wolves’ performance: *****+ One of their best away performances of the year, even after the demoralising loss of a team member.
Entertainment value: ***** Far better than most Peterborough matches.
Man of the Match: Very tricky to call this one, but Steve Johnston put in much more effort than in recent weeks, so it goes to the skipper.
Referee (Mick Posselwhite): ***** Only had one decision to make, and called it correctly.
Rider ratings:
Scott Nicholls: **** Not sure why he wasn’t in heat 15.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Looked reasonably quick from his new team slot, and displayed his usual fast gating.
Steve Johnston: **** Maximum effort all the way.
David Howe: Impossible to judge from two turns, so no rating given – can the Official Star Counter please omit this appearance from the records?
Fredrik Lindgren: *** Looked fast in his early rides.
Magnus Karlsson: ** Does not yet look fully fit.
Ronnie Correy: **** Excellent form for the Showground.
This performance was certainly more than a lot of fans expected, and will no doubt fire the team up for their crucial trip to Eastbourne on Friday. The good news is that David has declared himself fit to ride, while Eastbourne riders are currently dropping like flies. It will certainly be a close encounter – hopefully not of the “thud” kind!
