Davey Watt 2* 2 2* 1* 3 10 + 3

Peter Karlsson 3 3 3 1 X! 3 13
Krzysztof Pecyna 0 1 2 1 4
Steve Johnston 0 1* 0 3 4 + 1
David Howe 1 2 1 2 6
Fredrik Lindgren 2 Fx 3 Fx 1 6
Magnus Karlsson 1 1 0 2
Ronnie Correy 3 1* 1* 1 6 + 2
Wolves head to Sussex to face an injury hit home side. With both sides missing their number ones, the Eagles had Chris Harris and R/R instead of the injured Adam Shields and David Norris. A precious away win was a strong possibility…
Heat 1 - Peter Karlsson ; Chris Harris ; Dean Barker ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; (3-3)(3-3)
Impressive win for PK, but KP almost comes to grief on the 2nd bend of lap 2, bouncing off the fence.
Heat 2 - Ronnie Correy ; Andrew Moore ; Magnus Karlsson ; Steen Jensen ; (2-4)(5-7)
Jensen touches the tapes and goes back 15 metres. It’s a Wolves 5-1 from the gate in the rerun until a brave move around the outside of bend 4 on lap 3 sees Moore take 2nd place from Magnus. Ronnie looks impressive at the front.
Heat 3 - Dean Barker ; Davey Watt ; David Howe ; Steve Johnston ; (5-1)(10-8)
The home pair gate but Johnno looks fast and aggressive in 3rd and powers inside Watt on the 4th bend of lap 2. He challenges Barker who makes a huge mistake on the 2nd bend, almost falling and virtually stopping. Johnno just manages to avoid collision and loses all speed dropping to the back. A really lucky and undeserved 5-1 for the home side. Had he hit Barker then Barker would surely have been excluded, his reward for missing him was last place… go figure!
Heat 4 - Mark Loram ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Ronnie Correy ; Andrew Moore ; (3-3)(13-11)
Ronnie nips inside Moore on the 2nd bend to share the heat for Wolves.
Heat 5 - Peter Karlsson ; Davey Watt ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; Dean Barker(F) ; (2-4)(15-15)
Great start from KP on the inside and Barker makes the same mistake on the 2nd bend again only this time he falls gently, much to the Wolves fans’ amusement (see heat 3). Easy win for PK but Watt rounds KP on the 4th bend.
Heat 6 - Chris Harris ; Davey Watt ; Magnus Karlsson ; Fredrik Lindgren(Fx) ; (5-1)(20-16)
Harris leads with Freddie chasing until the last lap where Freddie picks up an alarming amount of grip on the 2nd bend and comes flying off the back of the bike and bouncing down the back straight. Magnus takes to the grass to avoid man and machine and is awarded 3rd place. Freddie walks away to change his underpants.
Heat 7 - Mark Loram ; David Howe ; Steve Johnston ; Steen Jensen ; (3-3)(23-19)
Jensen slides off on the 1st bend as the Wolves pair fall over themselves to give chase to the quick looking Loram.
Heat 8 - Chris Harris ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; Ronnie Correy ; Andrew Moore ; (3-3)(26-22)
The Wolves pair gate but Ronnie takes KP wide on the 2nd bend and Harris takes the lead.
Heat 9 - Fredrik Lindgren ; Dean Barker ; Davey Watt ; Magnus Karlsson ; (3-3)(29-25)
Freddie takes the win on PK’s bike but it could have been so much better… an aggressive first lap from Magnus right round the outside and he takes 2nd, but is slowly reeled in by the home pair who both overtake him on the last two laps. Damn!
Heat 10 - Mark Loram ; Chris Harris ; David Howe ; Steve Johnston ; (5-1)(34-26)
Oh dear… this always looked a dodgy race and so it turned out. The home guests take maximum points as David and Johnno again fall over one another in trying to make a pass.
Wolves try to regroup in the interval as the fans continue to celebrate Lupus’ 40th birthday courtesy of banners and confetti from Nicko and delicious chocolate Swedish balls from Sugababe (don’t ask).
Heat 11 - Peter Karlsson ; Mark Loram ; Krzysztof Pecyna ; Steen Jensen ; (2-4)(36-30)
The lead is pegged back to 6 after another fine win from PK and a safe 3rd from KP.
Heat 12 - Steve Johnston ; Dean Barker ; Ronnie Correy ; Andrew Moore ; (2-4)(38-34)
A vital win from the Wolves skipper… he rounds Barker on the 2nd bend only for the home rider to drive hard inside him on the 4th bend. Johnno is having none of it and returns the favour, charging under Barker on the 1st bend… good aggressive riding. Ronnie secures 3rd and Wolves creep ever closer.
Heat 13 - Mark Loram ; Chris Harris ; Peter Karlsson ; Fredrik Lindgren(Fx) ; (5-1)(43-35)
A disastrous result for Wolves and the match is effectively lost here. Freddie makes a great start from the outside and joins PK at the front on the 1st bend. Peter never looks across though and forces his team mate wide and into the fence! Referee Barry Richardson excludes Freddie as the cause of the stoppage much to the Swede’s disgust. Peter compounds his vital error in the rerun by missing the start and trailing home in 3rd place. Eagles now lead by 8 points and the aggregate score is level.
Heat 14 - Davey Watt ; David Howe ; Andrew Moore ; Peter Karlsson(X!) (Tactical Sub) ; (4-2)(47-37)
Peter Adams boldly goes for broke in this race. Rather than protecting the bonus point he goes for the win, replacing Ronnie with PK off 15 metres (and for double points). A maximum 8-1 here would give us a chance in the last, but we need a good gate from David. We don’t get it as he misses the start and Davey Watt pulls away for the match winning heat win. David quickly passes Andrew Moore, as does Peter and David ensures Peter in 2nd over the finishing line. So it should be a 5-3 to Wolves, and a six point deficit… except it isn’t. After a long delay it is eventually announced that Peter Karlsson has been excluded for wearing the yellow helmet colour rather than a black and white one! This is an unbelievable decision from referee Barry Richardson – surely the race would never have started had HE noticed. And what price speedway’s credibility? All this squad number and helmet colour nonsense is frankly ridiculous and does nothing to enhance the sport. Are Sky’s viewers really so stupid that they can’t understand Red, Blue, White and Yellow and numbers 1 to 7 or is someone at the TV channel having a laugh at the promoters’ expense?
Heat 15 - Peter Karlsson ; Mark Loram ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Chris Harris ; (2-4)(49-41)
The Eastbourne announcer, the incredibly irritating Kevin Coombes desperately tries to build up the non existent tension for the race for the bonus point. After the helmet colour fiasco, we have the sight of the bonus point decider being contested by 3 guests! PK wins from the gate and Freddie wins an excellent battle with Chris Harris for 3rd and we have a run off. Frankly, the travelling fans couldn’t care less about the bonus… other than we don’t want Eastbourne to get it so undeservedly! Even Jon Cook admits over the PA that the referee got it completely wrong by excluding PK and that Eastbourne didn’t deserve to win the bonus.
Bonus Point Run Off: Peter Karlsson beat Mark Loram (excluded).
So the guest number ones face off for the bonus. Loram bizarrely comes out in blue and Peter in green for anyone keeping notes! Loram gates, PK passes him on the inside down the back straight and Loram cuts in and dives inside going into the 2nd lap, getting it wrong and taking both riders into the fence. Referee Richardson excludes Loram, presumably for causing the fall though it may have been because he doesn’t like the colour blue… and Wolves get the bonus. Loram apologises to PK for the error and we’re all friends again.
Five Star Ratings
Weather *** The storm clouds gathered overhead in a midnight blue shade (!) but the rain kept away.
Track Conditions ***** Very good, plenty of overtaking and good work carried out during the interval.
Attendance *** Haven’t been since the playoff final… there were a few more there that night!
Wolves Performance ** The match was there for the taking with the home side looking weak… but once again we came up short.
Entertainment **** Excellent. Great racing, a close meeting marred only by the referee.
Referee: * Barry Richardson is reputed to be retiring soon. Good.
Peter: **** Great to see him back in a Wolves racejacket… back where he belongs. His commitment was superb, rode 4 races in succession at the end, including a tactical sub ride from 15 metres back and loaned his bike to Freddie earlier in the meeting. Terrific stuff… but sadly his heat 13 ride was decisive. He turned a potential Wolves 5-1 into a 1-5 and virtually handed the home side the win. A cruel twist after an otherwise superb display.
KP: *** Tried as hard as ever and took the points you would hope he’d score.
Johnno: *** Very unlucky in his first ride and redeemed a poor 3rd ride with a vital win over Barker in heat 12. Looked fast but if only his gating was better…
David: * A poor night where he beat only the reserves. This match came only two days after David took a really heavy fall at Peterborough and I’m not sure how much this affected him… to be honest I was surprised to see him riding.
Freddie: *** Picked himself up from a scary looking fall in his 2nd ride only to suffer a completely unjustified exclusion in heat 13. Despite these setbacks he battled hard and scored some vital points, particularly the one in heat 15.
Magnus: * Tried really hard but hasn’t looked right since returning from injury.
Ronnie: *** Should be a trump card at reserve, unfortunate to miss out on a 5th ride in heat 14.
Man of the Match: Peter Karlsson was by far the best Wolf on view, but as he’s officially a guest I’ll give it to Freddie Lindgren for his fine efforts despite the bad luck.
Final Verdict: A playoff contending side would have won this meeting (like the Oxford away match you have to take advantage of the home side’s problems). Unfortunately, the 2005 Wolves side has very rarely looked like playoff contenders and failed again. We are fast approaching the time when the management have to be big enough to admit to the fans that they got their team planning badly wrong this season. They can’t say that we didn’t warn them!
