3. Steve Johnston - 3-3-2-4-0 12

5. Mark Loram - 2-1-2-2* 7+1
6. Magnus Karlsson - 3-0-0-0 3

It was good to be starting the meeting with a four point lead (for the bonus point!) and the slight possibility that we could take something home with us. Unfortunately that wasn’t to be the case but at least we were provided with a last heat decider for all three points.
Thinking about taking something home with us – if each Wolves fan had taken a handful of shale away as a ‘keepsake’ we would have removed the lot. And there were only about a dozen of us there!! The failure to present a ‘racing’ surface removed almost all of the entertainment value from the fixture. Those of us who were able to make the 380 mile round trip journey did so because we wanted to see some exciting speedway racing – we wasted our money and time! Shame on you Ipswich for sterilising the meeting to the point of it being simply a gating competition which could have taken place on a 50 metre strip of the car park. At this stage of the season and especially with Wolves’ and Ipswich’s relative league positions it was a real opportunity to entertain the public without play-off places being at stake.
1. Andersen, LINDGREN, PECYNA, Miskowiak. 3-3. 60.0
Andersen led from the gate off the inside. Krys missed the gate but powered round Miskowiak on the 1st bend and there were no further changes (a feature that will become repetitive!!).
2. KARLSSON, Stancl, CORREY, King. 2-4, 5-7. 61.3
Magnus gated well from gate 1 and led the Ipswich pair up on the back straight. He slowed the Ipswich pair slightly and King made a booboo and Ronnie slipped through on lap 2 for the third place.
3. JOHNSTON, Louis, Jansson, HOWE. 3-3, 8-10. 61.0
Johnno flew from the gate (!) and made no mistakes as he went on to win easily. David tried inside and out for 4 laps but there was no drive. The track was bare!
4. Protasiewicz, LORAM, CORREY, King (Fx) 3-3, 11-13. 60.2
Pepe moved at the start and gained an advantage but it was all four back. Good move from the ref.
In the re-run Pepe gated but Danny King fell on the 3rd bend and was excluded. He damaged his knee and later withdrew from the meeting.
In the re-re-run Pepe gated again, Loram tried everything but there was no grip to be found anywhere.
5. Louis, PECYNA, LINDGREN, Jansson. 3-3, 14-16. 60.3
Jansson was moving at the start and moved back as the tapes went up... unlucky! Louis rode around our two on the first bend after a good gate and that was end of story.
6. Andersen, Miskowiak, LORAM, KARLSSON. 5-1, 19-17. 60.6
From the gate, Loram tried all lines to pass Miskowiak but couldn’t find any of the 14 pieces of shale. Magnus looked out of it a long way back.
7. JOHNSTON, Protasiewicz, HOWE, Stancl. 2-4, 21-21
JOHNNO wins again! Everybody else lost the gating competition and settled for what they had got.
8. Miskowiak, Stancl, PECYNA, CORREY. 5-1, 26-22. 60.9
The two Wolves riders reared at the start and there is no way back! Ronnie struggled a long way behind after the first half lap.
9. Jansson, LORAM, Louis, KARLSSON. 4-2, 30-24.
Loram and Magnus gated but Jansson went round the outside on bend 2 and Louis inside Magnus on bend 2 as both Ipswich riders had generated more speed before entering the first bend. End of.
10. Miskowiak, JOHNSTON, Andersen, HOWE. 4-2, 34-26. 61.2
Miskowiak gated. Andersen didn’t! End of.
11. Protasiewicz, LINDGREN, Stancl, PECYNA. 4-2, 38-28. 61.6
Freddie passed George Stancl on the back straight of lap 2. Hells Teeth – a pass!
12. Jansson, JOHNSTON (TR), Stancl, KARLSSON. 4-4, 42-32. 61.2
Johnno comes out in what must be the most talked about black and white helmet cover in the league. He also passed Stancl for second on the home straight of the first lap! Don’t get too excited though – that is the end of the overtaking for this meeting.
13. LINDGREN(TR), LORAM, Andersen, Protasiewicz. 1-8, 43-40. 61.2
Freddie wearing that hat again, and he gated. Loram took those four handfuls of throttle out of turn 2 and joined him on the back straight. 8-1 to Wolves... in heat 13!!! Now there’s a shock. At this point I wondered whether Ipswich regretted the decision to go slick as a badger’s bum…….
14. CORREY, Stancl, Louis, HOWE. 3-3, 46-43. 61.5
Superb ride from Ronnie off the outside gate. The Ipswich pair team rode and David failed to make any impression because of………you know, don’t you?
15. Louis, Andersen, LINDGREN, JOHNSTON. 5-1, 51-44. 61.3
Missed the gate – all three league points down the pan.
I think it was testing good fortune right to the limit to include Steve J in this race. Loram for his ‘balls out style’ or Ronnie for his quick start in the previous race, should have been used here with Freddie instead of Johnno.
As I mentioned at the start, this was an opportunity to provide a really entertaining lower end of the table meeting. What a shame the chance was missed.
Wolves rode well enough but were unable to be sufficiently dominant out of the starts and into the first turns to win the meeting but a last heat decider at least kept the suspense going until the end of the meeting.
The highlights for me were Johnno’s sudden-found gating ability (well done to MrWulfAndrew for forecasting this), Ronnie’s heat 14 race and the excellent rides by both Freddie and Loram in heat 13 to achieve their 8-1.
The obvious downsides were losing the league points (I know it doesn’t really matter but it’s the principle), David's return to poor form, and the totally crap track preparation (have I mentioned that before?).
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: **** Lovely warm evening.
Track conditions: * As slick as it gets.
Attendance: *** Better than in the past – a sunning lizard.
Wolves Performance: *** We were in it until the last race so I’ll give them three stars.
Entertainment value: * I want to see racing – there was very little.
Man of the Match: Despite fading in the last race it is the captain who received the accolade this meeting for turning his performance round against the odds and keeping us in the meeting right up to the last heat. Well done Steve Johnston.
Referee (Dale Entwistle): **** Only made two, but was consistent in his starting decisions.
Rider ratings
Mark Loram (G): ** Well below what I would expect from a heatleader guest.
Ronnie Correy: *** One good race. A bit fortunate to keep three stars.
Fredrik Lindgren: **** Struggled with the starts and first turns again apart from heat 13 when he was excellent.
Steve Johnston: **** Just what you need from a captain but it’s come a little too late hasn’t it? Hope this meeting boosts his confidence a little.
David Howe: * Couldn’t gate – couldn’t pass. This disastrous combination probably lost us the meeting!
Magnus Karlsson: ** Good first ride but out of touch after that.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Krys attacked the track and was always chasing his opponents hard.
See you soon,
