1. Freddie Lindgren 3,3,3,1*,1 = 11+1 (5)
2. Krzysztof Pecyna F,1,3,0 = 4 (4)
3. Steve Johnston 3,2*,2*,2 = 9+2 (4)
4. David Howe 2*,3,3,3,3 = 14+1 (5)
5. Scott Nicholls 3,3,3,2 = 11 (4)
6. Magnus Karlsson 2*,1,0,1 = 4+1 (4)
7. Ronnie Correy 3,1,2*,0 = 6+1 (4)
Ipswich 34
1. Hans Andersen 2,2^,2,3,2 = 11 (5)
2. Robert Miskowiak 1*,0,0,1* = 2+2 (4)
3. Chris Louis 1,0,1*,3 = 5+1 (4)
4. Kim Jansson 0,2,2,4^,0 = 8 (5)
5. Pepe Protasiewicz 2,2,X,0 = 4 (4)
6. Carl Wilkinson Fx,0,1,1 = 2 (4)
7. Kevin Doolan 1,0,1,0 = 2 (4)
Rain fell on Monmore Green overnight to mid morning and when the fans entered the stadium at 6.30pm onwards the track staff were working flat out to blade and regrade the track. They did an excellent job and the meeting started on a clearly but slightly chilly August evening.
Heat 1 Lindgren, Andersen, Miskowiak, Pecyna (FELL) 57.01 3-3 3-3
This took three attempts to run. First time out Freddie went down after a nudge from Andersen, and next time KP and Miskowiak slid off on the first bend. All four back was the correct decision each time. Finally we get a race as Freddie rides a brave first bend to squeeze past Andersen into the lead and he pulls away for a fine win. At the back, KP and Miskowiak battle for the odd point until KP locks up on the last bend and takes to the grass, making the track staff nervous until laying the bike down!
Heat 2 Correy, Karlsson, Doolan (F,rem), Wilkinson (Fx) Awarded 5-1 8-4
Doolan slides off on the 1st bend and the home pair are on a 5-1 when Wilkinson hits the fence on the 2nd bend of lap 2. The race is stopped and a 5-1 awarded to Wolves in one of the quickest finishes ever seen at Monmore.
Heat 3 Johnston, Howe, Louis, Jansson 58.41 5-1 13-5
A good gate and easy win for the Wolves as the Witches pair ride an awful race.
Heat 4 Nicholls, Protasiewicz, Correy, Doolan 56.61 4-2 17-7
Sluggish start from gate 4 for Nicholls who then rides a sensational 2nd bend to fly between the visiting pairing. Ronnie catches Doolan and goes underneath him on the 2nd lap for the point.
Heat 5 Howe, Johnston, Andersen (TR), Miskowiak 57.40 5-2 22-9
A very early tactical ride for Andersen but he gets lost out wide on the 1st bend and the Wolves Demon Duo(?) bag another 5-1, well OK a 5-2.
Heat 6 Lindgren, Protasiewicz, Pecyna, Wilkinson 56.83 4-2 26-11
Another excellent ride from Freddie who easily outpaces Pepe. KP recovers from a poor gate to put Wilkinson to the sword down the back straight (geddit?)
Heat 7 Nicholls, Jansson, Karlsson, Louis 56.10 4-2 30-13
Jansson gates but Scotty’s at it again and charges underneath him on the 4th bend with the sort of body language which says “Out of my way son or else…” Chris Louis is nowhere at the back.
Heat 8 Pecyna, Correy, Doolan, Miskowiak, 58.32 5-1 35-14
Wolves pile on the points with another easy 5-1. KP treats us to an excellent celebration – feet up on the handlebars and leaning back as though he’s having a nap. He might have done it on the 2nd lap and still won the race… is this really the same Ipswich team that thrashed us in the KO Cup?
Heat 9 Howe, Johnston, Wilkinson, Protasiewicz(X) 57.59 5-1 40-15
A third successive maximum from the Howe/Johnston pairing who race away for an easy win. Ipswich’s humiliation is almost complete when Pepe earns an exclusion for diving underneath Wilkinson who bails out.
Heat 10 Lindgren, Jansson, Louis, Pecyna 57.21 3-3 43-18
Freddie gets forced wide on the 1st turn but produces a superb outside move on the 3rd and 4th bend to round everyone and take the lead. KP misses out in a tight first lap and is left stranded at the back.
Heat 11 Nicholls, Andersen, Miskowiak, Karlsson 56.53 3-3 46-21
By now the fans are willing Nicholls to miss the start as we know what will follow. He obliges again, charging underneath Andersen on the 2nd bend for his third win of the night.
Heat 12 Louis, Johnston, Wilkinson, Correy (Never started) 57.78 2-4 48-25
A complete mess of a start. Louis is gardening on the line for an age and the start marshal walks away and the referee lets the tapes up just as Ronnie pulls back, leaving the American stranded at the start. Paul Ackroyd allows the race to continue even though Ronnie stays alarmingly close to the racing line as they come round on lap 2 as he refuses to leave the track in protest. Fortunately, the race ends without incident, notable only for a very fortunate first heat winner for the inept Witches as Louis holds off Johnno’s strong challenge.
Heat 13 Andersen, Nicholls, Lindgren, Protasiewicz 57.43 3-3 51-28
For once Scott is unable to find a way past as the fast starting Dane takes the victory.
Heat 14 Howe, Jansson (TR), Karlsson, Doolan 57.86 4-4 55-32
The track is quite slick now and David completes his 4th unbeaten ride in front of Jansson as Magnus just holds off a strong challenge from Doolan at the back.
Heat 15 Howe, Andersen, Lindgren, Jansson 56.89 4-2 59-34
An excellent start from David from the outside as he bags a paid 15 point maximum. Freddie is poised to pass Andersen for 3 laps before losing momentum slightly and having to settle for 3rd.
Verdict: A surprisingly easy victory over a very poor Ipswich side. Local radio reports suggested that Ipswich were unhappy with the track before the start but in reality the staff produced an excellent race surface in under an hour.
Five Star Ratings
Freddie: ***** A superb night. It’s easy to forget that this is Freddie’s first full season and he’s moved from number 7 to number 1 in the space of less than a season. And he’s nineteen. N-N-N-N- nineteen.
KP: *** A battling performance and he was close to scoring many more. Certainly not being disgraced since moving to number 2.
Johnno: ***** His best Monmore showing for months, he beat Andersen and Protasiewicz, dropping his only point after a scrappy start in heat 12.
David: ***** A paid 15 point maximum and he finally breaks his heat 15 duck with an excellent win over Hans Andersen. Superb gating and he never looked like losing.
Scott: ***** The perfect guest again, his commitment and overtaking were superb.
Magnus: ** Still well below his best and seems to be riding with a lack of confidence.
Ronnie: *** Revitalised by the move to reserve, and looks confident again. Robbed in his last race but I wish he’d cleared the track a little earlier…
Track: **** Rode extremely well considering the state it was in when we got there.
Weather: ** Overnight rain caused a lot of problems.
Crowd: *** No better than average, poor results perhaps having an effect. A disillusioned hamster perhaps.
Referee: * Paul Acroyd must have been the only man in the stadium who thought the start of heat 12 was good.
Entertainment Value: *** A huge Wolves win is always welcome but Ipswich were awful.
Wolves Performance: ***** An excellent performance which left you wondering… if they can ride like that how come we’ve lost five home matches this year? Maybe the “Jekyll and Hyde Wolves” would be a more appropriate nickname?
Man of the Match: The top four were all excellent but David Howe takes tonight’s award without question.
Final home league match of the season next week (and it’s still August!) before we move on to the REAL business this season… the Craven Shield. Our best (read: only) chance of silverware apart from maybe the Olympique.
Mark.
