A new sponsor, some new faces, and a new champion – the 2005 Olympique had it all. What it sadly did not have, however, was a decent racing surface, with a tricky track leading to some spectacular spills alongside a few decent races. Freddie, however, overcame this to beat Hans Andersen in a run-off for the title, capping a superb season.
Before the start it was announced that Chris Neath would not be appearing, after the management received a text message from him at 4.30 pm. This left no time to arrange a replacement, so the reserves had to fill in his rides.
Numbers in brackets indicate handicaps.
Heat 1: Lindgren (0), Skornicki (0), Ermolenko (0), Priest (0), 58.44.
Adam made the best gate but Freddie showed his intentions by shooting around the outside on turn two. Sam - in possibly his last Monmore appearance before his farewell meeting – chased Adam until running wide.
Heat 2 (re-run): Nicholls (0), Nermark (0), Hougaard (0), Pecyna (f.excl) (0), 58.96.
Krys looked as though he had been sampling the Banks’s prior to this one, as he almost hit the fence while lining up before falling on turn four while leading. He picked himself up and rejoined only to do exactly the same a lap later for a stoppage. Nicholls led all the way in a slow-looking re-run – which would prove to be the first of many.
Heat 3 (re-run): Howe (0), Andersen (0), Correy (0), Hefenbrock (0), 59.11.
“Take Me Out” sang Franz Ferdinand before the start of this one, and Ronnie duly obliged by taking out David on the first turn, with all four allowed in the rerun. This saw David round Hans to lead and go on for a good win, while Hefenbrock Looked reasonable in his first Monmore ride.
Heat 4: P Karlsson (0), McGowan (0), M Karlsson (0), Johnston (ret) (0), 59.49.
As expected PK led all the way, while Johno held third until his bike expired – just about summing up his season.
Heat 5 (re-run): Andersen (15), McGowan (15), Nicholls (20), Ermolenko (f.excl) (10), 59.89.
Sam went into the air fence ending the first lap (keeping up his custom of one fall in almost every Monmore appearance!), and was excluded from the rerun. Hans led this all the way, with Nicholls trying but failing to make up his handicap on the rapid McGowan.
Heat 6: Correy (10), P Karlsson (20), Lindgren (20), Nermark (15), 59.53.
PK made such a quick start that he was in second by turn two, but Ronnie held on to win with Freddie taking welcome returnee Daniel on lap two for third.
Heat 7: Hefenbrock (0), Skornicki (15), M Karlsson (10), Hougaard (10), 60.22.
Hefenbrock led impressively all the way, while fellow newcomer Hougaard held second until his bike failed on the last lap, coasting over the line last.
Heat 8: Howe (20), Johnston (0), Pecyna (0), Hargreaves (ret) (0), 60.48.
David produced the ride of the night to take second starting lap two, before catching and passing Johno on the final lap to win from 20 yards.
Heat 9 (re-run): Nermark (0), Ermolenko (0), Johnston (15), Hefenbrock (f.excl) (20), 59.90.
Hefenbrock spun off at the first turn and was excluded, with Daniel leading the rerun all the way.
Heat 10: Nicholls (10), Lindgren (10), Howe (20), M Karlsson (10), 58.85.
From the gate, save for David taking a slow-looking Magnus wide for third.
Heat 11 (re-run): Pecyna (10), Andersen (20), P Karlsson (15, then 25), Skornicki (15), 59.67.
A couple of crazy races followed. The first saw Krys jump the start although he was allowed in the rerun. At the second attempt PK moved off early and was moved back a further 10 yards for his crime. The rerun saw Krys lead all the way, although he was almost caught by the flying Andersen who shook off a battling PK.
Heat 12 (re-run): McGowan (15), Hougaard (0), Priest (0), Correy (f.excl) (20), 60.39.
Ronnie appeared wearing the wrong helmet colour, and his mechanic dashed onto the track with the correct one to the appropriate accompaniment of the Benny Hill theme music! McGowan took Priest for the lead as Hougaard slowed slightly and dropped to fourth, before Ronnie’s chain snapped on turn four sending him falling hard face-first onto the shale. The chasing Hougaard was left with two options: hit Ronnie, or hit the fence. He took the latter, piling hard into the air fence, while McGowan fell on turn two as the red flags flew. Thankfully no injuries resulted, and the rerun saw McGowan pass both Priest and Hougaard for a good win.
Heat 13 (re-run): Howe (10), Ermolenko (15, then 25), Hougaard (15), P Karlsson (f.excl) (10), 59.34.
PK locked up on the first turn thanks to the track conditions, and David and Sam were unable to avoid piling into him. All parties eventually got to their feet, although PK and David certainly looked in some discomfort. PK was excluded, and the rerun saw Sam move off early and be penalised to 25 yards – a decision which he disapproved of. David led all the way at the third attempt, with Sam taking Hougaard for second mid-race.
Heat 14: Lindgren (15), Hefenbrock (0), McGowan (20), Pecyna (20), 60.26.
Freddie took the lead from Hefenbrock ending lap one to keep his title hopes alive, while McGowan just failed to catch Hefenbrock for second.
Heat 15: Skornicki (0), Correy (0), Nicholls (20), Hargreaves (0), 59.79.
From the tapes, save for Nicholls taking third early on from Hargreaves, who had replaced Johno for reasons unknown. Perhaps the Flymo had run out of petrol?
Heat 16: Andersen (15), M Karlsson (0), Nermark (20), Priest (0), 60.47.
Magnus led the first three laps, but Andersen came though to take the win confirming his status as a title favourite.
Heat 17: Pecyna (0), M Karlsson (15), Ermolenko (15), Correy (15), 60.04.
Ronnie held second behind Krys all the way, only for his chain to break once again on the last turn.
Heat 18: Lindgren (20), Andersen (20), Hargreaves (0), Hougaard (fell) (10), 59.37.
Freddie tucked in behind Hans as the pair powered their way to the front, before taking the lead from the Dane on the home straight, leaving them level on points. Hougaard held third only to fall on the last turn.
Heat 19 (re-run): McGowan (10), Skornicki (20), Howe (ret) (20), Nermark (f.excl) (10), 59.98.
McGowan sent Daniel flying on the first turn for a stoppage, with the Swede strangely excluded. David had to score a second place in the rerun to force a three-man runoff for the title, and looked set to pass Adam when his bike failed on lap two, ending his hopes of a rostrum place.
Heat 20: Nicholls (10), Hefenbrock (15), Priest (0), Hargreaves (0), 59.89.
PK elected not to race after taking a knock in his earlier crash, so only one man was really going to win here, and he duly took the lead on the back straight swiftly followed by Hefenbrock.
When the points were added up, Freddie and Hans remained locked together on 12 points, with Nicholls and McGowan also tied on 11, so two run-offs would ensue.
Run-off for 3rd: MCGowan (outside gate), Nicholls (inside gate), 60.13.
McGowan rounded off an impressive evening by taking Nicholls on the back straight for the win and a podium place.
Run-off for 1st: Lindgren (inside gate), Andersen (outside gate), 60.40.
The inside gate did not seem a good choice for Freddie, but he countered this by taking a strange inside line at turn one to go inside Hans and lead him home for a famous victory.
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: **** Great for an October evening.
Track conditions: ** Too slick throughout – not what we wanted for the most attractive meeting of the year.
Attendance: **** Reasonably good.
Entertainment value: *** The racing was not half as good as in previous Olympiques, but the meeting still provided it sown unique brand of entertainment.
Man of the Meeting: Everyone!
Referee (Graham Flint): *** Fine except for the heat 19 decision.
Rider ratings:
Sam Ermolenko: *** A typical Monmore performance.
Fredrik Lindgren: ***** A worthy champion.
Adam Skornicki: *** Good middle-order riding.
Scott Nicholls: **** His usual fast Monmore pace.
Daniel Nermark: *** Looked a little rusty on his return to the track.
Patrick Hougaard: **** A very good debut – belied his 16 years.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** A typical Olympique score.
Hans Andersen: **** Showed his liking for our track once again.
Ronnie Correy: *** Unlucky with engine problems.
Christian Hefenbrock: ***** Very impressive for a newcomer.
David Howe: ***** Deserved a top three place.
Travis McGowan: **** Where has this guy’s sudden form come from?
Peter Karlsson: *** OK until his heat 13 crash.
Magnus Karlsson: ** Looked slow and below his usual form.
Steve Johnston: ** No comment!
Luke Priest/Jack Hargreaves: *** Did their job as was expected.
The meeting was concluded by the annual firework display, for which the remote controls failed halfway through – nothing ever seems to work properly at Monmore this season, does it? The result was some hilarious scenes as one of the firework company’s staff set them off by hand – though it was certainly far from hilarious for him I’m sure. I will award him 5 stars for bravery as a reward! *****
Just two more meetings to go in 2005 – the home and away challenge against Coventry. Let’s hope for a big turnout of Wolves this Friday at Brandon, and also next Monday at the Green!
