Figures in blue are for the ridiculous ‘clutch destroyer’ heats 15 & 16
Score charts ripped off from the Wolfcry Fans’ Forum! (ack. Sugar Baby Love)
It was very difficult to summon up much enthusiasm for this fixture and it seems that the riders also felt the same as their performance was hardly inspired. There were probably less than twenty Wolves fans in attendance at Brandon although the home crowd was a reasonable size.
Wolves took gates one and three in heat one.
Heat 1 - Harris, Ulamek, Correy, Lindgren 5-1
Freddie gated but was pushed very wide by Harris in the first turn and both Coventry riders, and Ronnie, passed him on the inside. Ulamek passed Ronnie in the same move up the back straight.
Heat 2 - Smolinski, Risager, Karlsson, Pecyna 5-1 10-2
Magnus gated but Smolinski went inside him up the back straight. Risager passed Magnus at the end of lap two – also on the inside (this was to become a pattern). Krys was a long way back.
Heat 3 - Kylmakorpi, Howe, Janniro, Johnston 4-2 14-4
Wolves were on a 4-2 from the gate with David leading until Kylmo took the lead on the first bend of lap 2. Then Janniro passed Johno out of bend 4 and Johno tailed off at the back. David Howe’s machine was smoking heavily as he left the track.
Heat 4 - Hamill, Nicholls, Pecyna, Smolinski 2-4 16-8
Wolves were on a 5-1 from the gate until Nicholls went round Krys at the end of the 1st lap. Nicholls closed in on Hamill and pushed hard but couldn't catch him while Krys was under pressure from Smolinski. This was it folks – the only heat advantage of the meeting! Enjoy it now……
Heat 5 - Kylmakorpi, Lindgren, Janniro, Correy 4-2 20-10
Wolves gated and were on a 5-1 (again) but Ronnie went from 2nd to last on turn 4 and at the same time Kylmakorpi went from 3rd to 1st as Freddie messed up that fourth turn.
Heat 6 - Ulamek, Hamill, Harris, Karlsson 4-4 24-14
Billy Hamill tactical ride. Coventry gated but Hamill went under Harris on turn 4 after he made a mistake there. Magnus was way back and uncompetitive.
Heat 7 - Nicholls, Howe, Risager, Johnston 4-2, 28-16
From the gate.
Heat 8 - Ulamek, Smolinski, Pecyna, Correy 5-1 33-17
From the Gate despite Ronnie trying the outside until Smolinski took the Rocket slightly wide in turn 4 and he tailed off at the back as Krys came through.
Heat 9 - Kylmakorpi, Hamill, Janniro, Karlsson 4-2 37-19
Kylmakorpi gated whilst Hamill took Janniro wide on the first turn before speeding into the lead on the back straight. Kylmo re-took the lead on the inside of the fourth bend again and cleared off.
Heat 10 - Ulamek, Johnston, Harris, Howe 4-2 41-21
Ulamek all the way. Johno and David were 2nd and 3rd until Harris went round David on the 4th bend of the first lap.
Heat 11 - Nicholls, Risager, Correy, Lindgren (Ret) 5-1 46-22
Fredrik was 2nd for the first lap but went in way too deep on turn 4 and pulled up. (you would have thought that we would have worked out by now that the outside of that bend was NOT NOT NOT the place to ride! Bring back Pavlov’s dogs!). Ronnie was nowhere.
Heat 12 - Janniro, Smolinski, Howe, Karlsson 5-2 51-24
David Howe tactical ride. First time away and Wolves gated but it was called back. Couldn’t see a lot wrong with it – apart from the obvious! Second start Coventry gated. David was taken wide on the first turn. Magnus was 2nd until turn 3 when Smolinski passed him. It was so easy for Janniro he was pulling wheelies down the straights.
Heat 13 - Hamill, Harris, Nicholls, Lindgren 3-3 54-27
Wolves were on a 5-1 from the gate but Fredrik made a mess of turn 2 and both Coventry riders went past him on the inside. Freddie continued to struggle with the bike later in the lap as he tried to make up lost ground. Clear win for Hamill.
Heat 14 - Kylmakorpi, Pecyna, Risager, Johnston 4-2 58-29
Krys made a ‘Pecyna’ flying start but Kylmakorpi once again got past on turns 3 and 4 (but round the outside!). Johno may as well have stayed in the pits.
Heat 15 - Janniro, Risager, Pecyna, Karlsson 5-1 63-30
Lap 1 - Karlsson, Janniro, Pecyna, Risager
Lap 2 - Pecyna, Janniro, Risager, Karlsson
Lap 3 - Janniro, Risager, Karlsson, Pecyna
Lap 4 - Janniro, Risager, Pecyna, Karlsson
Risager was awarded 2nd overall on bonus points as he was tying with Krys.
Heat 16 - Hamill, Kylmakorpi, Ulamek Johnston 3-3 66-33
Lap 1 - Kylmakorpi, Ulamek, Hamill, Johnston
Lap 2 - Hamill, Ulamek, Kylmakorpi, Johnston
Lap 3 - Hamill, Kylmakorpi, Ulamek, Johnston
Lap 4 - Hamill, Kylmakorpi, Johnston, Ulamek
These final two heats took an eternity to run, were missing the most competitive riders from both sides (apart from Hamill) and were the biggest waste of time and money I can imagine at speedway. Crowd reaction was apathy and boredom. Most of the riders must have refused to take part because of the wear and damage this stupidity would cause to clutches (like a whole meeting’s usage in one race) and therefore the line-ups were unrepresentative.
Speedway is working hard supposedly to dispel the opinion to prospective new fans that it is always the first rider out of the starts that wins the races. In other words the sport is trying to sell the racing and overtaking excitement and not the gating reactions and the action in the first bend. So why have the respective managements decided to promote this concept that is basically a gating competition allowing very little riding ability to shine through? What made it worse was the fact that the commentator had no idea how it was going to work and completely failed to effectively inform the crowd of the scoring method. Fans from both sides were leaving the stadium before the second of these awful spectacles began. To put it more into perspective, David Howe whose injury meant that he couldn’t take part, had cleared the pits, showered, changed, bought some food and drink, and made his way onto the terraces during the time it took to run heat 15.
I hope we don’t see this feature at Monmore Green on Monday!
Five Star Ratings:
Weather: **** Pleasant autumnal evening.
Track conditions: *** As you would expect at Brandon. Perhaps slightly more dirt than normal.
Attendance: *** Reasonably good – a grey ferret. Very few wolves fans.
Entertainment value: ** Virtually zero for wolves fans – OK for Coventry if you like walkovers.
Man of the Meeting: The correct choice would be Billy Hamill but I want to choose a Wolves rider and only one emerges with credit – David Howe.
Referee (Graham Flint): *** Fine except for the heat 19 decision.
Rider ratings:
Fredrik Lindgren: * Out of sorts all night and strangely at odds with his machine. The only person he beat was Janniro – once.
Krzysztof Pecyna: *** Just scraped an average star rating.
Ronnie Correy: * Failed to beat an opposition rider.
David Howe: *** Rode whilst in considerable pain and did what was expected of him.
Billy Hamill: **** Excellent guest who got stuck in and was good value. Good job he turned out for us because the remaining Wolves scored 18 between them!
Magnus Karlsson: * Failed to beat an opposition rider.
Steve Johnston: ** Beat one opposition rider - once.
Sorry that this is a lacklustre report but that’s the way the meeting made you feel after travelling over to Coventry and paying their higher than normal admittance fee and then watching our disinterested team trudge through the meeting as if they were wishing they were anywhere else.
Let’s finish the home season on Monday with a bit more pride and get behind the team and treat the match as a one-off because last night is best forgotten. I promise I will – if you will.
Cheers
