A bumper size crowd who have just witnessed Oxford pip Eastbourne by a point for the Craven Shield.
The track has been tyre packed during the trophy presentation and it looks as though passing will be at a premium.
Wolves win the toss and take gates 1 and 3 in the first heat.
Heat 1: McGowan, Hancock, Seb, Ronnie (Ex 2 Mins) 5-1, 60.6
Ronnie’s bike packs up on the way to the start. Despite much activity they can’t get it going and he is Excluded under the two minute rule. Inexplicably there is no replacement.
The Oxford pair gate and are gone; Seb doesn’t get near enough to challenge.
Heat 2: Krys, Magnus, Mills, Courtney 1-5, 6-6, 61.6
Wolves gate this time. Mills pushes Magnus for a lap before dropping back. Courtney way last.
Heat 3: Hamill, Eriksson, Adam, Sam 5-1, 11-7, 61.4
Sam and Adam are wearing their Wolves racesuits.
Adam gates in the lead, but Eriksson goes inside him and Hamill outside him around the first two bends. Sam totally misses the gate, and closes on Adam towards the end of the race.
Heat 4: Iversen, Krys, Mills, Ronnie (R/R)(ef) 4-2, 15-9, 61.7
An even start, Iversen pulls clear in to the first bend. Krys pushes him for two laps before dropping back. Ronnie is in an easy third place when he has engine failure entering the third bend of the last lap to gift Mills a point.
Heat 5: Seb, Eriksson, Magnus, Hamill,( Ronnie Ex 2 Mins), 2-4, 17-13, 61.8
Ronnie’s nightmare evening continues as they can’t fix his bike from the previous race in time. This time Magnus replaces him.
Wolves gate on a 5-1 with Hamill suffering engine failure from the start. Eriksson passes Magnus down the home straight at the end of lap 3.
Heat 6: Hancock, McGowan, Adam (R/R), Magnus, 5-1, 22-14, 62.1
An easy win from the gate for the Oxford pair.
Heat 7: Iversen, Adam, Sam, Courtney, 3-3, 25-17, 62.2
Sam gates from gate 2. Iversen charges underneath him into the first bend looking for a non existent gap and takes Sam’s front wheel away. Inexplicably the referee orders a restart with all four riders. Sam is not happy and protests in front of the referee’s box to no avail.
In the rerun Sam and Iversen are level into the first bend but the Dane just manages to slip under Sam as Sam tries to shut him out on the line. Adam goes around the outside of Sam on the first two bends and presses Iversen for 2 laps before dropping back. Courtney way last.
Heat 8: Krys, McGowan, Mills, Ronnie, 3-3, 28-20, 61.5
Krys makes a great start to lead. Ronnie gates 3rd but Mills passes him around the first two bends. McGowan is all over Krys but Krys rides a perfect line to keep him out. Best race of the night so far.
Heat 9: Seb (R/R), Eriksson, Magnus, Hamill, 2-4, 30-24, 61.8
The Oxford pair totally miss the gate. Eriksson passes Magnus around the first two bends but Hamill is strangely subdued at the back.
Heat 10: Hancock, Sam, Adam, McGowan, 3-3, 33-27, 62.0
Hancock gates first but Adam blocks McGowan on the inside. The Wolves pair team ride perfectly, Sam outside and Adam inside for 4 laps to keep McGowan at bay.
Heat 11: Ulamaek, Iversen, Ronnie, Courtney, 2-4, 35-31, 62.1
From the gate.
Heat 12: Eriksson, Sam, Magnus, Mills, 3-3, 38-34, 62.2
The Wolves pair gate and Sam is a little unlucky paying the price for looking for his partner. Sam is on the outside and as he looks across for Magnus on the inside on bends 1 and 2, Eriksson nips underneath the pair of them. Sam pushes Eriksson but just can’t get past.
Heat 13: Ulamek, Hancock, Krys (R/R), Iversen, 2-4, 40-38, 62.2
The Wolves pair gate on a 5-1. Hancock squeezes under Krys down the back straight of lap 1. Iversen presses Krys for a lap for 3rd before dropping back. Hancock closes on Seb but Seb had too much of a start.
Heat14: Mills (in for Courtney), Adam, Krys, Courtney ( in for the unfit Hamill), 3-3, 43-41, 62.2
Hamill is last from the start and rears as he leaves the gate. He falls from the back of his machine with no one near him. The refereee makes his second crazy decision of the night by announcing a restart with all four riders. However, it is announced that Hamill is unfit and his place will be taken by Courtney – surely Wolves can get a 5-1 to lead into the last race?
Our season is summed up in one race – Adam makes a shocker of a gate and Mills makes a rocket propelled start. Adam gets by Courtney, but Krys can’t catch Mills who rides the race of his life. Adam nicks the two points form Krys right on the finishing line.
What an opportunity missed but a great ride by Mills.
Heat 15: Hancock, Seb, Eriksson, Krys,4-2, 47-43, 63.1
Wolves win the toss and take gates 1 and 3.
The Wolves pair gate on a match winning 5-1, but along the back straight of lap 1, Eriksson passes Krys for 3rd and Hancock passes Seb for the lead. It stays that way to the flag and Oxford are home and dry to take the points they need to avoid the Wooden Spoon.
Weather: **** - warm and dry – excellent for late October.
Track: ** tyre packed after the Craven Shield and not much passing after the first lap.
Attendance **** good crowd boosted by the Craven Shield Final – approximately 15 Wolves fans spotted.
Wolves performance *** Like so many away performances kept the score close but when the going got tough the riders didn’t come up with the goods.
Referee – Dale Entwhistle * Only had two major decisions to make and he got them both obviously wrong.
Man of the Match – KRZYSZTOF PECYNA
RIDER RATINGS:
SEB **** Excellent performance.
RONNIE * A night to forget for Ronnie, beset by mechanical problems – the story of his season.
SAM *** Did everything that could be expected of him – unlucky in his last ride when he suffered for his unselfishness.
ADAM *** Again did everything expected of him.
MAGNUS *** Sharp from the gate but again looked to be struggling for confidence.
KRYS **** Sharp from the gate and held on to score vital points. Deservedly nominated for Heat 15 and Man of the Match in what is likely to be his last Wolves appearance.
Another away match typical of our performances this year on our travels – So close and yet so far.
