This was not the start that the new-look 2006 Wolves were looking for, with poor gating proving the team’s downfall on a very slick Poole track. PK looked surprisingly off-form on his Wolves return, while Magnus looked very slow in his first three rides. Thankfully, the team improved slightly in the second half of the match, with Krys in particular showing some great form.
Poole won the toss and took the inside gates, and the season began…
Heat 1: Boyce, Pedersen, P Karlsson, Pecyna, 60.33. 5-1, 5-1.
It was Poole all the way from the start in this one, with Pedersen shutting the door on PK’s third lap attack handing Boyce the win on his Poole return.
Heat 2: D Davidsson, J Davidsson, Hefenbrock, Lawson, 61.09. 5-1, 10-2.
From the gate again, with the field strung out by the second lap as the surface slickened.
Heat 3: Walasek, Lindback, Lindgren, M Karlsson, 60.72. 5-1, 15-3.
Freddie made Wolves’ first start of the night, but Walasek led out of the first turn. Starting lap three Lindback went inside Freddie, almost putting both wheels across the white line to take second, with Magnus way behind – a very depressing first three heats.
Heat 4: Kasprzak, Hamill, D Davidsson, Hefenbrock, 59.78. 4-2, 19-5.
After getting over the initial shock of the first “C’mon Billy!” of the season, Wolves fans were treated to a good gate from the new signing only for Kasprzak to take up the running. Christian held third from the start but eventually lost out to Davidsson on the third lap.
Heat 5: Lindback, Pecyna, Walasek, P Karlsson, 59.89. 4-2, 23-7.
Krys made the gate but then went wide on turn two, delaying PK and scraping the pit gate, but somehow keeping going! This allowed Lindback into the lead, but Krys managed to hold second after a wild first lap.
Heat 6: Pedersen, Boyce, Hamill, Lawson, 60.21. 5-1, 28-8.
From the gate, with Wolves looking to have little hope left.
Heat 7: Kasprzak, Lindgren, J Davidsson, M Karlsson, 60.10. 4-2, 32-10.
Poole gated yet again, but Freddie burst around Davidsson at the end of the second lap, and managed to hold him off. Magnus was nowhere for the second race in a row.
Heat 8: Boyce, Pecyna, Hefenbrock, D Davidsson, 61.59. 3-3, 35-13.
Christian made a good start but was rounded immediately by Boyce, with Krys taking his team mate at the end of lap one with the German holding on to secure Poole’s first last place of the night.
Heat 9: Lindback, Hamill, Walasek, Lawson, 59.80. 4-2, 39-15.
Poole once again made the start but Billy took Walasek for second at turn three.
Heat 10: Lindgren, Pedersen, Boyce, M Karlsson, 60.09. 3-3, 42-18.
Finally, a race win! Freddie led all the way after a cracking start, and just held off Pedersen to the line. Magnus finished well behind again.
Heat 11: P Karlsson, Pecyna, Kasprzak, J Davidsson, 60.97. 1-5, 43-23.
PK looked rejuvenated for this one, and rounded Kasprzak on the first turn to lead, with Krys third. The Pole then shot round his fellow countryman at the end of lap one, and despite a lift of the front wheel held on very well to secure Wolves’ first heat advantage of the season!
Heat 12: M Karlsson, Walasek, D Davidsson, Hefenbrock, 60.29. 3-3, 46-26.
Whatever had been said to Magnus, it certainly worked here! He led from the gate in a complete turnaround of form, chased all the way by the Poole pair.
Heat 13: Pedersen, Hamill, Kasprzak, P Karlsson (double), 59.20. 4-2, 50-28.
PK sported the black and white helmet for the first time, but it didn’t work as he finished nowhere. Billy meanwhile just held off Kasprzak for second behind Pedersen.
Heat 14: Lindback, Lindgren (double), J Davidsson, Lawson, 60.17. 4-4, 54-32.
Another double, and this time Freddie made a good start only to be passed by Lindback on turn two, the Nordic-Brazilian going on to complete his maximum despite Freddie closing in slowly.
Heat 15 (re-run): Pedersen, Kasprzak, Hamill, P Karlsson (excl, 2 mins), 59.72. 5-1, 59-33.
There was some controversy before the start as PK was excluded under the two minutes (incidentally, no audible two-minute warning was heard all evening) and before Wolves had even made a decision, the two minutes was underway for the rerun! The non-existent replacement was also excluded without ever being announced, so Billy lined up alone for the restart. He produced one of his trademark rolling starts and the race was stopped, with Poole outgating him easily in the rerun.
Ratings (out of 10):
Weather: 3 - Dry and clear, but incredibly cold.
Track conditions: 3 - Far too slick, making a gater’s track.
Attendance: 7 – A reasonable attendance for a challenge match.
Wolves’ performance: 3 – Very poor gating was our downfall, but this was a warm-up challenge - the result was not important
Entertainment value: 4 – the poor track made for little passing, but it was good to see some speedway again!
Man of the Match: No contest – Krzysztof Pecyna after some lively riding.
Referee (Rod Smith): 8 – marks knocked off for the two-minute antics.
Rider ratings (out of 10):
Peter Karlsson: 4 – Looked rusty in all but one race.
Krzysztof Pecyna: 8 – Some brave passes and hard riding.
Magnus Karlsson: 2 – Very slow barring his last ride.
Freddie Lindgren: 7 – The most consistently gating Wolf in the latter stages.
Billy Hamill: 6 – Fast, but poor gating.
William Lawson: 3 – It was a big step up to the Elite for the Scottish youngster, but he did not look too far behind in his later rides.
Christian Hefenbrock: 5 – a reasonable debut.
As the song goes, things can only get better – this was purely a warm-up for the season ahead. Let’s hope that the team pulls together and puts this tough night on the south coast behind them.
