7. Daniel Davidsson- 0-1-1-3 =5
It was our first meeting at the Green and a challenge match and should be treated as such so there is no need to worry at all. Yes, I expected and hoped to win the match but given the facts that two riders were poorly, another two had never ridden the track competitively before, and it was the first time in the dry in 2006 for the rest – the team did well enough. There were a number of clear positives to note but I will mention them later. First the racing details.
Heat details:
Heat 1 Karlsson P, Pedersen, Boyce, Pecyna 3-3 3-3
Dominant start at home from Peter who lead from tapes to flag, eventually opening up a 30 yard winning margin over Bjarne Pedersen. It’s good to have the ‘A’ back in ‘Abba’ isn’t it? (sorry!). Krys was off the pace in this opening heat.
Heat 2 Davidsson J, Lawson, Hefenbrock, Davidsson D 3-3 6-6
Jonas Davidsson won from the start but was reeled in by William Lawson who looked very solid. Christian made a great start of gate 4 but faded after the first bend although he did enough to hold off the later challenges from Daniel Davidsson. Many folks expected a Poole 5-1 in this heat!!
Heat 3 Lindback, Walasek, Karlsson M, Lindgren rtd 1-5 7-11
Excellent gate from Freddie to lead into turn one and run everyone very wide but he then locked up and the bike seemed to stop and he retired. MK could not recover from the first turn and create a passing opportunity despite a big effort.
Heat 4 Kasprzak, Hamill, Davidsson D, Hefenbrock f-rem 2-4 9-15
Lightning start from KK to lead the very quick race. Billy tracked him but was never close enough to challenge seriously. Christian slid off in third place at the start of the second lap just on the turn in to the first bend. It was a strange place to come off but he was not hurt and remounted to finish last.
Heat 5 Boyce, Pedersen, Lindgren, Karlsson M 1-5 10-20
In the first attempt Boyce shoved Magnus and caused him to fall – all four back. In the restart Boyce gates and is followed by Pedersen. Magnus challenged in the first lap or so and was then passed by Freddie on lap 3 who took up the challenge without success. We need to learn to gate like they did last Wednesday and tonight!
This week’s homework is …..
Heat 6 Kasprzak, Karlsson P (TR), Pecyna, Davidsson J 5-3 15-23
Another terrific gate from KK. Peter, who was on a Tactical Ride, tried every line and every trick to get round but just couldn’t find enough grip. Nevertheless, PK looked so spectacular!
Heat 7 Hamill, Lindback, Walasek, Lawson 3-3 18-26
An extremely brave Billy Hamill missed the start but then reeled in and passed Walasek and then Lindback round the outside of turns 3 and 4 at the end of the first lap. It was a breathtaking move through a very small and decreasing gap, and a taste of things to come from our new lad. William went on to pressurise Walasek and kept him honest.
Heat 8 Boyce, Pecyna, Davidsson D, Hefenbrock (fell exc) 2-4 20-30
Boyce again led from the start with Krys chasing. Christian was in third and had a nasty fall on the last bend of the 3rd lap when his machine seemed to falter mid-bend and eventually spat him off to land on his head and shoulder. He remained still for some time and I feared an injury but he was on his feet a few minutes later. Unfortunately that is now two gifted points for Daniel Davidsson.
Heat 9 Kasprzak, Lindgren, Davidsson J, Karlsson M 2-4 22-34
Kasprzak looks like he is on rails as he makes another of those annoying starts and goes on to win easily. Freddie passes and then team rides a slowing Magnus which almost results in both of them being passed by J Davidsson on the run in to the flag. Fortunately Freddie is aware enough of the situation and secures second place but Magnus is beaten.
Heat 10 Karlsson P, Walasek, Lindback, Pecyna 3-3 25-37
This is the race situation I have been waiting for ever since PK’s name was announced! Peter made the start but messed up the first bend and is in last place! In the next lap he brushes aside KP and Walasek as if they were not there and sets off after Lindback and proceeds to show him how to ride Monmore Green properly as he blows him away. This was a typical Peter Karlsson ‘Animal’ ride and was an absolute delight to behold – worth every penny of the admission money.
Heat 11 Hamill (TR), Pedersen, Boyce, Lawson 6-3 31-40
Billy rode a very dominant first two bends to secure his win over Pedersen. William rode an excellent first lap or so when he really put Boyce under pressure. This is more impressive when you remember how well Boyce has been riding.
Heat 12 Lindback, Karlsson M, Davidsson J, Hefenbrock 2-4 33-44
Lindback wins from the tapes. Davidsson pushed Magnus hard as he once again seemed to tire as the race progressed, but Maggie responded well and took second place by half a wheel.
Heat 13 Karlsson P, Pedersen, Hamill, Kasprzak 4-2 37-46
Pedersen gated and led for two laps but then Peter Karlsson decided enough was enough and ‘gently’ slid down the inside of him and moved him over as they went into the first bend of the third lap. Billy Hamill made a good attempt to come through the door that PK had opened for him but he was just too far back to make the move stick. Mind you, he’ll know the game plan next time won’t he? Kasprzak, having missed the gate, was never in contention. So a home heat advantage in heat 13 – now there’s a thing!
Heat 14 Davidsson D, Lawson, Lindgren, Walasek 3-3 40-49
Daniel Davidsson makes a start and is never caught. William has a great battle with Walasek until Freddie comes through after a bad start and helps out a bit. Lawson has really impressed me tonight.
Heat 15 Karlsson P, Kasprzak, Lindback, Hamill 3-3 43-52
Faultless win for Peter Karlsson to top off a fantastic opening to his home season. The dirt had all gone by this time and there was no way that any of the following riders could create overtaking chances in what was a very fast race.
Comment:
Once again the temperature hovered just above freezing but when you take into account the ‘Monmore Home Straight Chill Factor’ it was actually minus 14 degrees at the green. Considering speedway is a ‘summer’ sport I think all of the riders are doing great to get through meetings as cold as this with all their bits still attached.
I mentioned at the start of the report that even though we lost I could see quite a few positives from tonight's meeting so here goes:
• William Lawson impressed me greatly and he sealed a good night's work by beating Walasek easily - and you wouldn't have put money on that!
• PK was at his Monmore best and only dropped the single point because there was not sufficient grip on the track for him to make the pass in heat 6. Fantastic to see him in Wolves colours again and making those trademark 'Animal' passes.
• Billy Hamill also had a couple of excellent races where he showed us his clear potential to score points, but was then left wondering where the dirt went in his last two outings.
• Christian made some good starts and challenges in the first laps but just needs to learn the lines a little more. Both times that he fell he was in points paying positions and one of those falls was machinery related I think.
• Freddie seemed to trip himself up in his first race and was a bit quiet after that as he spent some time team riding. I think this will be the lowest score we see from him at the Green this season - and it is the right night for it. No worries.
Slightly more concerning were Magnus and Krzysztof who were both off the pace and Magnus seemed to tire quickly in his races. However, I have seen them both have very good rides in the matches last week so let's put it down to winter cobwebs and the freezing temperatures.
It was fantastic to watch those impressive races from Peter Karlsson and Billy Hamill and I now have real high hopes for William Lawson who does not seem to be afraid of reputations and is prepared to get stuck into a battle for points. He and Christian will gradually achieve more as they master the home track and learn the away ones.
Next meeting is at Swindon with the big track on Thursday. Often a difficult place for us to ride being so different to Monmore Green but some of the team have excelled there in the past. The forecast is for more freezing temperatures so that second bend bank is going to feel like Outer Siberia!!
Weather: As quoted on Sky Sports News last week – ‘Cold!’
Track: Smooth and slick, perhaps dictated by the conditions and the fact that we have riders in the team that are ‘learning’ they track. Unfortunately of course, this is the way Poole would have had the track if they had have been asked. Hoping for more dirt soon.
Attendance: A decent crowd from where I was standing – the car park was fairly full by 6.50pm.
Wolves Performance: We relied far too much on the top two and this cannot be sustained if we wish to do something in the league this year. There was no way I wanted us to lose at home in the first meeting but actually I went away feeling quite encouraged despite the nine point loss. The middle order of the team need to regroup and work out the problems but once that is sorted we will be fine.
Entertainment: The absolute best speedway sight is to watch PK when he is ‘on one’ at the Green! I saw that tonight and so the entertainment value for me was terrific.
Referee: Robbie Perks: Did everything correctly in my opinion.
Man of the Match: Peter Karlsson. He dropped straight back into the role that we all remember him for and looked more dominant around this track than anyone we have signed for quite a few years. Go PK!
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 9 Excellent night’s work both from the tapes and also from the back. Captain’s performance
Krzysztof Pecyna: 4 Krys apparently had the flu and had some hard races and was ‘impeded’ by PK in his last. He beat the reserves but could have done better.
Magnus Karlsson: 4 I hoped for more from Magnus in this meeting and he will have to deliver now that the league is about to start. He seems to tire in races and drops places.
Fredrik Lindgren: 4 Not the track surface he would have wanted but nevertheless it was well below expectations.
Billy Hamill: 7 A couple of excellent rides and then a couple where he missed the starts and floundered. As with Freddie I think he will relish more grip as the weather improves.
Christian Hefenbrock: 4 Gave away a couple of points when he fell but gains credit for battling and for gating.
William Lawson: 7 I hoped he would beat one or both of their reserves but didn’t expect him to take on Walasek and win. Other good battling rides as well. Very promising
