OXFORD 43 WOLVES 47, KNOCKOUT CUP 1ST ROUND, 1ST LEG, WEDNESDAY 29TH MARCH
Cheetahs:
David Howe 3 3 1* 0 2 =9+1
Eric Andersson 1 1 2 2 =6
Davey Watt 1* 0 1* 3 =5+2
Adam Skornicki 2 2 2 1* =7+1
Leigh Adams 3 3 2 1 1* =10+1
Adam Pietraszko 1 0 1* 2 =4+1
Lubos Tomicek 0 0 0 2* =2+1
Parry’s International Wolves:
Peter Karlsson 2 3 3 3 3 =14
Krzysztof Pecyna 0 1 3 0 =4
Magnus Karlsson 3 1* 0 0 =4+1
Freddie Lindgren X 2 3 3 =8
Billy Hamill 2 2 3 2* 0 =9+1
Ben Wilson 3 0 0 1 =4
Christian Hefenbrock 2* 1* 1 0 =4+2
Finally, the first win of 2006! The was the first occasion when the Wolves seemed to pull together as a team and really seemed to fight for their success, with the side just having the edge over Oxford all the way through. Ben made an excellent Wolves debut, while Christian and Krys both looked fast – indeed, all seven Wolves managed at least one paid win.
The absence of Tony Rickardsson, apparently due to a migraine, allowed Oxford to bring in Leigh Adams as a potentially dangerous guest, but PK was simply awesome in inflicting three defeats on the Australian champion.
Oxford won the toss and took one and three.
Heat 1: Howe, P Karlsson, Andersson, Pecyna, 59.59. 4-2, 4-2.
David held of a determined PK to win his first ride against his former club, while Krys looked a little slow as he got used to the track.
Heat 2: Wilson, Hefenbrock, Pietraszko, Tomicek, 61.34. 1-5, 5-7.
Hands up if you expected this result. Thought so! Ben made a cracking debut in Wolves colours by leading all the way, with Christian following and holding off Pietraszko well, despite lifting on the first lap.
Heat 3 (re-run): M Karlsson, Skornicki, Watt, Lindgren (f.exc), 60.15. 3-3, 8-10.
Magnus made the gate, but Freddie straightened up exiting turn two and ran into the back of Watt, catapulting both into the fence in a nasty looking pile-up. Eventually Freddie was up and OK, although excluded, while Watt was helped back to the pits with an ankle injury but was able to ride on. The rerun was halted again after former Wolf Adam moved off early, with the third attempt seeing Magnus lead Adam all the way, with Watt looking slow at the back.
Heat 4: Adams, Hamill, Hefenbrock, Tomicek, 58.86. 3-3, 11-13.
Adams took his predictable win in a time a second faster than anyone else as usual, while Christian held off Lubos (which Wolves fans decided translates directly as “Toilet Duck”) all the way for third behind Billy.
Heat 5: P Karlsson, Skornicki, Pecyna, Watt, 60.71. 2-4, 13-17.
Wolves led from the start but Adam rounded Krys on the first lap to the cheers of one Wolves fan.
Heat 6: Howe, Hamill, Andersson, Wilson, 59.24. 4-2, 17-19.
David just held off Billy all the way.
Heat 7: Adams, Lindgren, M Karlsson, Pietraszko, 59.55. 3-3, 20-22.
Adams all the way once again, while Pietraszko clipped the fence on turn two and somehow kept going.
Heat 8: Pecyna, Andersson, Hefenbrock, Tomicek, 60.50. 2-4, 22-26.
Andersson led the first lap but Krys brilliantly powered down the outside of him starting lap two, and looked very rapid en route to the win. Andersson’s wide line allowed Christian to close slightly, all the while holding off Toilet Duck – great stuff!
Heat 9: Hamill, Skornicki, Watt, Wilson, 60.14. 3-3, 25-29.
From the gate.
Heat 10: Lindgren, Andersson, Howe, M Karlsson, 61.05. 3-3, 28-32.
Freddie shot inside David and Magnus on the first lap to lead, with Andersson moving through to second ahead of Magnus, who held third until David went through on lap three.
Heat 11: P Karlsson, Adams, Pietraszko, Pecyna, 59.77. 3-3, 31-35.
PK gated level with Adams and went around the outside to lead, going on for a brilliant win. Krys made a move on Pietraszko on lap two, but stayed at the back.
Heat 12: Watt, Tomicek, Wilson, M Karlsson, 60.94. 5-1, 36-36.
Oops! Watt, his ankle now recovered, led all the way chased initially by Ben, but the young gun straightened up on turn four and slipped to third. Magnus returned to his Poole form at the back, and the scores were level.
Heat 13: P Karlsson, Hamill, Adams, Howe, 59.40. 1-5, 37-41.
Now I’m sure no-one expected this result! PK bombed away at the front to win in a quick time, while Billy produced a very brave first lap after gating last, to somehow go between the Oxford pairing entering turn three and emerge in second – classic stuff! (Thanks to Tim Hamblin of the Express & Star for details on this one, as it was hard to see Billy’s move from where we were stood!) Apparently, Billy didn’t know where PK or anyone else was on the track – he just put his head down and went for it!
Heat 14: Lindgren, Pietraszko, Skornicki, Hefenbrock, 61.30. 3-3, 40-44.
The four all stayed close, but Freddie led all the way for his second win.
Heat 15: P Karlsson, Howe, Adams, Hamill, 59.71. 3-3, 43-47.
PK led all the way for his third defeat of Adams, capping a fantastic performance.
Weather: Cold, but the rain held off until the crowd had left the stadium – it then lashed down all the way back up the M40.
Track: Better than expected, with a fair amount of dirt on the outside line, although perhaps a little too much on turn two.
Attendance: An improvement on last year’s attendances at Cowley, but still not a fantastic crowd.
Wolves’ performance: Much better than we have seen so far.
Entertainment value: A good night’s racing, with a fair amount of passing.
Man of the Match: No contest – Peter Karlsson all the way for a simply superb performance on track, and also doing a great captain’s job in the pits.
Referee (Chris Durno): Everything correct.
Rider ratings (out of 10):
Peter Karlsson: 9 – Stunning – if only he hadn’t been beaten by David, it would have been the first perfect 10 of the season.
Krzysztof Pecyna: 7 – looked much livelier than he has so far this year.
Magnus Karlsson: 5 – Spectacularly inconsistent as always.
Freddie Lindgren: 7 – Picked himself up well after his spill.
Billy Hamill: 7 – Did a good job as backup to the flying PK.
Ben Wilson: 7 – A fine debut, including a win in his first Wolves ride.
Christian Hefenbrock: 7 – some great defensive riding, but needs to learn to use the throttle a little more.
So, can we complete the double over the Cheetahs (it does feel good to be saying that again!) on Monday? Let’s hope that the track will be less slick this time around, and that the Wolves’ gating continues to improve.
Once a Wolf, always a Wolf
