Wolves prepared for their first official home meeting of 2006 with the luxury of a 4 point lead from the first leg at Cowley last week, and the expectation of a comfortable and confidence boosting home win. The meeting marked the return to Monmore of two 2005 Wolves in David Howe and Adam Skornicki, and the final appearance of six times World Champion Tony Rickardsson.
Oxford skipper David Howe called “heads” ,won the toss and chose gates 1 and 3. For those of you keeping a record, this was the first time an on loan Wolves rider acting as skipper for an away side had won the toss after choosing heads on a Monday in April for ages.
Heat 1 - Peter Karlsson ; David Howe ; Ronnie Correy ; Eric Andersson ; (4-2)(4-2)
David makes good use of the inside gate to take the lead. Ronnie cuts inside on the first bend to pass Andersson, and PK goes for the outside line. He rides a brave wide line for a full two laps and eventually emerges in front of David Howe for the win. A rare outside pass so early in the meeting and a great ride from PK.
Heat 2 - Christian Hefenbrock ; Ben Wilson ; Lubos Tomicek ; Adam Pietraszko ; (5-1)(9-3)
The Wolves pair make a good start and Christian finds some good drive out wide to build up a big lead. A confident 5-1.
Heat 3 - Fredrik Lindgren ; Adam Skornicki ; Davey Watt ; Magnus Karlsson ; (3-3)(12-6)
Freddie is pushed hard by a fast Adam Skornicki as Magnus makes little impression at the back.
Heat 4 - Tony Rickardsson ; Billy Hamill ; Christian Hefenbrock ; Lubos Tomicek ; (3-3)(15-9)
Another fine start from Christian who harasses Rickardsson for a couple of bends before the Swede pulls away.
Heat 5 - Fredrik Lindgren ; David Howe ; Eric Andersson ; Magnus Karlsson ; (3-3)(18-12)
Andersson leads from the gate from Lindgren, Karlsson and Howe. Freddie follows him for a lap before cutting inside him out of bend two. David Howe follows the same line to take Magnus at the same time.
Heat 6 - Tony Rickardsson ; Peter Karlsson ; Ronnie Correy ; Adam Pietraszko ; (3-3)(21-15)
Rickardsson gates and is away, PK and Ronnie take a lap to get past the fast starting Pietraszko by which time Tony has it all wrapped up.
Heat 7 - Billy Hamill ; Davey Watt ; Adam Skornicki ; Ben Wilson ; (3-3)(24-18)
From the gate. Track is getting very dry and slick on the first bend now.
Heat 8 - Christian Hefenbrock ; Eric Andersson ; Ronnie Correy ; Lubos Tomicek ; (4-2)(28-20)
Another excellent start from Christian from gate 1. He pulls away for the win and celebrates with some great wheelies. Ronnie misses the start but reels in Tomicek for three laps before taking his customary tight inside line on the last lap to pinch the point. With the possible exception of Kate Moss, nobody sticks to that white line better than Ronnie!
Heat 9 - Fredrik Lindgren ; Tony Rickardsson ; Magnus Karlsson ; Adam Pietraszko ; (4-2)(32-22)
Move over Tony… here comes Freddie. A cracking first bend from our Swede sees him hit the front with Tricky right on his back wheel. Freddie rides three really aggressive laps to pull out a slight lead, however on the last lap he seems to get a little nervy and a couple of mistakes allow Tony to draw level. They race flat out to the line and Freddie gets it by a wheel or so… only to hit the fence on the first bend as he’s going too fast to stop. Rickardsson sportingly picks up his compatriot and takes him round to take the fans’ acclaim, a really nice touch.
Heat 10 - Peter Karlsson ; Ronnie Correy ; Adam Skornicki ; Davey Watt ; (5-1)(37-23)
Despite the slick conditions, the meeting has really come alive. Adam hits the bend first and takes PK way out wide. Ronnie turns it on the proverbial sixpence, picks up lots of drive out of the 2nd bend and gives them a look that says “Where you going boys? - see you later!” Peter soon joins him at the front for a Wolves 6-0, sorry 5-1.
Heat 11 - Billy Hamill ; David Howe (Tactical Ride) ; Eric Andersson ; Ben Wilson ; (3-5)(40-28)
Ben produces an excellent 1st bend to switch inside from gate 4 and overtake both Cheetahs in the process. Unfortunately he slides wide on the next bend and they take the positions back. Billy holds on for a win against David Howe (who’s on a double pointer) and gets a good reception from the crowd.
Heat 12 - Magnus Karlsson ; Davey Watt (Tactical Ride) ; Christian Hefenbrock ; Lubos Tomicek ; (4-4)(44-32)
“Davey Watt” “Tactical Ride” “Clutching” and “Straws” come into play here. Magnus saves his night by winning this one as Christian makes up a lot of ground on Watt by the end.
Heat 13 - Peter Karlsson ; Tony Rickardsson ; Billy Hamill ; David Howe ; (4-2)(48-34)
This was a stunning race. PK races away for the win as down the back straight the other riders are three wide with Billy nearest to the dog track. He keeps it wound on to somehow get past both opponents, only for Tony to power back inside him on the next lap. As Billy goes wide to try to find enough drive to re-pass Tony, David takes 3rd on the inside only for Billy to snatch it back on the run in to the line. A cracker!
Heat 14 - Adam Skornicki ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Ben Wilson ; Lubos Tomicek ; (3-3)(51-37)
Freddie misses the start and has to nudge Ben out of the way on the 3rd lap to try to salvage his maximum. He can’t pass Adam at the front, and the on loan Wolf treats the crowd to his traditional donut celebration.
Heat 15 - Tony Rickardsson ; Fredrik Lindgren ; Billy Hamill ; David Howe ; (3-3)(54-40)
The tie is safe and PK can take a rare heat 15 rest. Tony leads this all the way and milks the applause Hulk Hogan style on his victory lap. A good end to a fine night’s speedway as Monmore says farewell to one of speedway’s all time greats.
