WOLVES 48 PETERBOROUGH 42, ELITE LEAGUE A, MONDAY 10TH APRIL
Parry’s International Wolves:
Peter Karlsson 3 3 3 2 3 =14
Magnus Karlsson 1 1 F 0 =2
Ronnie Correy 0 1* X 1 =2
Freddie Lindgren 3 2 2 1 =8
Billy Hamill 3 3 3 1* 1 =11+1
Ben Wilson 0 0 1 =1
Christian Hefenbrock 3 2* 2 X 3 =10+1
Panthers:
Hans Andersen 2 3 2 3 2 =12
Tomasz Bajerski R/R 0 0 3 0 =3
Jesper B. Jensen 1* 2 3 2 3 0 =11
Niels Kristian Iversen 2 1* 1* 2 =6+2
Ryan Sullivan 1 2 3 0 =6
Richard Hall 2 0 0 0 =2
Ulrich Ostergaard 0 1* 0 1 1 2* 0 =5+2
Many supporters felt that the Wolves could have won this by a higher margin, but just as many went home happy with what was a fine performance from the team, with only the slightly below-par form of Ronnie and Magnus causing concern. Christian was fantastic on his way to his maiden double figure score, and certainly seems to have settled in well at Wolverhampton. Billy and PK continued to lead the team as only they can, while Freddie looked a little off-form in one or two of his later rides, and Ben was slightly off the pace but did his job with a point.
The decision by the Panthers to operate rider replacement for Bajerski was a curious one, considering he apparently rode in Poland the previous day.
Wolves won the toss and took gates one and three. For the record, this is the first time that this particular scribe has completely missed the pre-meeting coin toss at Monmore for several weeks.
Heat 1: P Karlsson, Andersen, M Karlsson, Ostergaard, 56.10. 4-2, 4-2.
PK led all the way to win in the fastest time of the season at the Green, with all four riders remaining strung out throughout.
Heat 2: Hefenbrock, Hall, Ostergaard, Wilson, 58.66. 3-3, 7-5.
Christian was out of the start like a rocket and away for an impressive win, holding off Hall all the way.
Heat 3: Lindgren, Iversen, Jensen, Correy, 57.39. 3-3, 10-8.
Ronnie was shut out at the back and looked slow, while Freddie just managed to hold off the battling Peterborough pair.
Heat 4: Hamill, Hefenbrock, Sullivan, Ostergaard, 57.40. 5-1, 15-9.
Wolves away from the start once again (what’s happening here?) for a fine 5-1. Ryan who?
Heat 5: Andersen, Lindgren, Correy, Hall, 56.88. 3-3, 18-12.
Hall clipped Ronnie as the riders entered the first turn, but Ronnie quicly retook him on the inside as Andersen outraced Freddie for the win.
Heat 6: P Karlsson, Sullivan, M Karlsson, Hall, 58.11. 4-2, 22-14.
PK led all the way, while Magnus made a decent start but was rounded by Sullivan on the first turn.
Heat 7: Hamill, Jensen, Iversen, Wilson, 57.56. 3-3, 25-17.
The Wolves gated but the Panthers pair were soon ahead of Ben and team-rode their way to second and third behind Billy.
Heat 8: Jensen, Hefenbrock, Ostergaard, M Karlsson, 58.04. 2-4, 27-21.
Christian made the start again and led for a lap until Jesper went around his outside on turn four. Magnus was back to his old form at the back.
Heat 9 (re-run): Sullivan, Lindgren, Ostergaard, Correy (f.exc), 58.29. 2-4, 29-25.
At the first attempt Freddie went inside Ostergaard to chase Sullivan, while Ronnie was fourth for a lap until he attempted to charge underneath Ostergaard into turn one, sending the Dane sprawling and also falling himself in an uncharacteristic move from the experienced American. Ronnie was excluded from the rerun, which saw Sullivan lead from the first turn, with Freddie having to work hard around the first lap to fend off Ostergaard.
Heat 10: P Karlsson, Jensen, Iversen, M Karlsson (f.exc), 58.02. 3-3, 32-28.
The Wolves made a fast start and were in front until Jesper attempted to go round Magnus, who tried to take him wide only for Puk to lift on the inside and shoot wide. Magnus reacted a little too sharply and came down on turn four. PK went on to win.
Heat 11: Hamill, Andersen, Wilson, Hall, 57.39. 4-2, 36-30.
Billy gated but turned in too late at the first turn handing Andersen the lead, but Billy brilliantly powered inside the Dane down the back straight for the lead and the win. Ben held of Hall all the way for a vital point.
Heat 12 (awarded): Jensen, Ostergaard, Correy, Hefenbrock (f.exc). 1-5, 37-35.
Oops! Ronnie appeared to get in Christian’s way on turn two handing the Panthers a clear advantage, and this continued until Christian fell on lap three and made no attempt to get up, resulting in the race being awarded and the Wolves looking in a little danger.
Heat 13: Andersen, P Karlsson, Hamill, Sullivan, 58.09. 3-3, 40-38.
Wolves led from the start but Andersen took PK wide on turn two to take the lead.
Heat 14 (re-run): Hefenbrock, Iversen, Lindgren, Ostergaard, 58.95. 4-2, 44-40.
Puk sent Freddie wide and almost into Ostergaard on the first turn, with Ostergaard spinning off for a stoppage. Somewhat surprisingly, all four were called back, and Puk again took Freddie wide in the rerun as Christian led. Peterborough tried to team-ride Freddie out of it but Freddie sternly battled on to take third starting the last lap, and just hold on at the line as Christian took the win.
Heat 15: P Karlsson, Andersen, Hamill, Jensen, 57.87. 4-2, 48-42.
PK rounded Andersen at turn two to lead, while Billy and Jesper swapped places throughout, the American eventually holding on for third.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: A dry, cold, clear, moonlit evening.
Track: Much better than it has been so far, with a good amount of dirt.
Attendance: Good crowd, as expected for our first home league match.
Wolves Performance: Good stuff from five riders, but the other two were lagging behind slightly.
Entertainment: Some excellent racing throughout.
Referee (Rod Smith): All decisions correct, although the verdict of first bend bunching in heat 14 could have been questioned if replays were used.
Man of the Match: A clear winner once again – Christian Hefenbrock for his maiden double-figure performance.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 9 A typically excellent Monmore performance.
Magnus Karlsson: 4 Seemed to struggle, and fell inexplicably in heat 10.
Ronnie Correy: 3 Did not look himself at all – but give him time and he should improve.
Fredrik Lindgren: 6 Battled from the back for his points.
Billy Hamill: 8 Some good passing moves throughout.
Ben Wilson: 3 Looked off the pace early on.
Christian Hefenbrock: 9 Definitely the match winner, the only blip coming with his Heat 12 fall.
