Wolves

2. Magnus Karlsson 1* 0 0 (1+1)
3. Ronnie Correy 2 1* 0 1* (4+2)
4. Freddie Lindgren 1* 2 2 6^ 2 (13+1)
5. Billy Hamill 0 2 1^ 2 0 (5)
6. Lee Smethills 2 0 0 (2)
7. Christian Hefenbrock 0 2 2 1* 2 1 (8+1)
On arrival on the grassy knoll the topic of conversation was firstly the lack of traffic on the M6, and then the stadium improvements. These consisted of the benches actually having wood on them, offering a seat at last, and that someone must have bought some new batteries for the PA system, as it was actually audible. Also noted was the lack of blossom on the much loved trees of the grassy knoll !!!
The track was being watered right up to the parade, and there looked very little shale on it, suggesting this was to be a gaters' paradise.
Wolves won the toss and took gates 1 and 3.
Ht 1.
Screen, PETER, MAGNUS, Bjerre 59.2 3-3 3-3
Screen flew off the outside while Bjerre never left the start line.
Ht 2.
Morris, LEE, Madsen, CHRIS 63.6 4-2 7-5
Lee gated and Chris was 3rd, but Lee was passed by Morris at the end of Lap 1. Coming to the end of Lap 2 Chris rode a wide line allowing Madsen through. To Chris's credit he tried different lines on Laps 3 and 4 and almost caught Madsen on the line. After the line Morris pulled up sharply and straight into the path of Chris on the second bend, almost as if he were half asleep, causing a collision. After the collision Chris was up quickly but Morris remained on track for several minutes before eventually limping back to the pits.
Ht 3.
Stead, RONNIE, FREDDIE, Wright 60.2 3-3 10-8
The Aces gated but both Wolves passed Wright on the first bend.
Ht 4.
Crump, CHRIS, Madsen, BILLY 60.8 4-2 14-10
Aces gated again but Chris went inside Madsen while Billy went outside. A safe 3-3 looked on the cards until Billy's bike failed on the final bend.
Ht 5.
Stead, PETER, Wright, MAGNUS 60.5 4-2 18-12
Stead gated with Wolves packing in behind, however Wright passed Magnus at the start of Lap 2, and Magnus tailed off.
Ht 6.
Screen, BILLY, Bjerre, LEE 60.7 4-2 22-14
From the gate. Billy is struggling with the 4th bend.
Ht 7.
Crump, FREDDIE, RONNIE, Madsen 60.4 3-3 25-17
Madsen in for the now withdrawn Morris. From the gate again.
Ht 8.
Screen, CHRIS, Madsen, MAGNUS 61.5 4-2 29-29
Firstly, Magnus came to tapes in the yellow helmet (doh). First time of asking resulted in an unsatisfactory start (Screen?). Second attempt was deja vu (Chris?). At 3rd attempt Aces gated with Chris all over Madsen until forcing a mistake out of Madsen on the final lap. Magnus looks awful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ht 9.
Stead, Wright, BILLY (t/r), LEE 61.4 5-1 34-20
Peter Adams wasted no time in getting Billy on a tactical ride, the problem was that Billy missed the gate, and try as he might, the track is now so slick there was no way past.
Ht 10.
Screen, FREDDIE, Bjerre, RONNIE 61.4 4-2 38-22
Again the Aces gate, but at the end of Lap 1 Freddie makes a superb pass on Bjerre.
Ht 11.
Crump, PETER, CHRIS, Madsen 60.8 3-3 41-25
Chris in as reserve replacement for Magnus. Yet again from the gate. Programme notes here consisted of BORING !!!!!!!!!!!!!! This must be one of the worst meetings I have seen.
Ht 12.
Stead, CHRIS, RONNIE, Madsen 61.1 3-3 44-28
Chris in again for Lee. Stead from the line, with Chris second, Madsen 3rd and Ronnie at the back. For one so new to the Elite League, Chris showed great maturity in moving Madsen wide at the end of Lap 1 to allow Ronnie to come through. Good thinking by the young German.
Ht 13.
Crump, BILLY, Bjerre, PETER 60.9 4-2 48-30
Yet again from the gate. No grip whatsoever.
Ht 14.
FREDDIE (t/r), Wright, CHRIS, Madsen 62.2 2-7 50-37
At last !!!!!!!!!!!!!! A race !!!!!!!!!!! And what a race. Yet again the Aces gate, but Freddie (off gate 1) emerges from the second bend a narrow leader. Chris passed Madsen at end of Lap 2, only to drift wide starting Lap 3 letting Madsen through. However, Chris then re-passed Madsen on final bend. Freddie won comfortably as the grassy knoll erupted!!!!
Ht 15.
Wolves won the toss and took gates 1 and 3.
Stead, FREDDIE, Crump, BILLY 61.3 4-2 54-39
Stead gated again, going on to complete his first faultless maximum (how did we miss out on his signature last year???). The real race happened behind him, where Freddie emerged from the second bend alongside Crump, made 2nd place his own on the 3rd bend, and continued to keep Crump at bay for the remainder of the race. In so doing Freddie became the first opposing rider to beat Crump this year.
On arrival at Kirky Lane the track looked very slick and my first reaction was "If we don't gate we don't win", little knowing just how true this would become. After heat 1 I thought it may be our day as Bjerre's machine packed up before it started, but by heat 7 I wondered if I was ever going to see a pass. Kirky Lane always seems to me to be a gaters paradise, but today it was exceptionally so. If this is what the Manchester public pay to see week in and week out then I feel sorry for them because they are being very short-changed. A win is a win, however gained, but if I had to watch that all the time I think I'd take up rhythmic gymnastics or Eddie Stobart spotting. They must be more exciting than this. At the end of heat 11 an Ace was heard to say "Peter Karlsson couldn't pass anyone", resulting in a very entertaining altercation between himself and several forum members. Well, we had to relieve the boredom somehow didn't we? Order was restored, but only until heat 14 when Freddie had the Wolves contingent going mad, singing, dancing, and chanting. A decent end to what was, on the whole, a dire meeting.
Weather
Spring sunshine at times, but mainly overcast and cold.
Track
A joke, a disgrace, no chance of passing from very early on.
Attendance
A good crowd was in attendance, obviously swelled by the bank holiday work-shy!!!
Wolves Performance
Two shining lights, four average away performances, one pathetic effort.
Entertainment Value
In short supply for the visitors and neutral. Aces loved it though. How fickle they are if they think this is speedway. Tractor with birthday boy Dobbin was more entertaining, as was the altercation on the knoll.
Referee
Tony Steele. Apart from the unsatisfactory starts in heat 8, he must have been as bored as us!!!!!
Man of the Match
Two contenders, but there can only be one winner. FREDDIE LINDGREN gets my vote, as not only did he win his tactical ride (our only heat win), he also beat the Ginger Whinger. Christian must also have a special mention for a gutsy performance on another new track.
Rider Ratings (on a scale of 1 to 10, with 6 being average expectation).
Peter 5. Tried hard enough, but would have expected 1 heat win from him.
Magnus 1. This must be Magnus's worst performance in Wolves colours. Simply didn't look interested.
Ronnie 6. Good enough from Ronnie, without excelling.
Freddie 8. Performed well, excelling in heat 14, and beating Crumpy in heat 15 was class.
Billy 5. Expected at least 8 points from Billy today.
Lee 5. Would have had 6 if he'd held the lead in heat 2.
Christian 8. Continues to progress very well. His moving of the more experienced Madsen in heat 12 shows he is not only fast, he also thinks fast. A cracking prospect.
See you all on Monday (and special thanks to Littlechef for the typing).
