Coventry Bees 53 Wolves 40 Elite League ‘A’ 14th April 2006 20.00
Opponents:
Chris Harris 2,1*,3,2*,1 = 9+2
Billy Janniro 1*,2,2*,1 = 6+2
Morten Risager 0,0,2,2* = 4+1
Rory Schlien 3,3,F,0 = 6
Scott Nicholls 3,3,2,3,3 = 14
Martin Smolinski 2*,0,1* = 3+2
Oliver Allen 3,2*,3,3,1 = 12+1
Parry’s International Wolves:
Peter Karlsson 3,3,3,1^,2 = 12
Magnus Karlsson 0 = 0
Ronnie Correy 1*,1*,2,1 = 5+2
Freddie Lindgren 2,2,F,2*,0 = 6+1
Billy Hamill 1,3,6^,0 = 10
Lee Smethills 0,0,0,1 = 1
Christian Hefenbrock 1,0,1,1,0,E,3 = 6
Comment: So the riders , mechanics and fans made their way back down an unusually quiet M6 and descended on ‘Sunny Coventry’. The track seemed much better prepared than the one earlier in the day and had much more dirt on which had been well watered,. a good sign to see some exciting racing at last? Hmmmm
The toss : PK called heads and the silver spherical object fell t’other side. So Coventry have gates 1+3
Heat 1: P.Karlsson Harris Janniro M. Karlsson 3-3 3-3 59.3
Pk makes a lightning gate to lead into the first corner and is never troubled by the Bees duo. Magnus is well adrift at the back with a motor sounding non too good. As the Brandon circuit has been altered this season this was a new track record beating the previous best of 60.1
Heat 2: Allen Smolinski Hefenbrock Smethills 5-1 8-4 62.0
The Wolves pair both completely miss the start handing an easy maximum to the Bees reserves. Smolinski looked very ragged but our guys were never close enough to challenge.
Heat 3: Schlien Lindgen Correy Risager 3-3 11-7 61.5
As you were from the first turn with no serious challenges to any positions
Heat 4: Nicholls Allen Hamill Hefenbrock 5-1 16-8 61.0
Billy gates level from trap 4 but seems to heat the heavy dirt on turn 1 and almost goes down. By the time he had recovered the Bees had buzzed off and despite chasing Allen all the way never put in a challenge.
Heat 5: P.Karlsson Schlien Hefenbrock Risager 2-4 18-12 60.3
Magnus is pulled out of this one as he is undergoing medical attention for a problem with his vision.
Both Wolves enter the first bend together but Schlien goes outside Christian entering the back straight. Peter is never troubled but Christian comes under 3 laps of severe pressure from Risager but rides a smooth race to thwart the young Danes challenge.
Heat 6: Hamill Janniro Harris Smethills 3-3 21-15 60.2
Billy again makes the start from Harris who tries the wide line on turn 4 which only loses him a place to his team mate. Lee battles hard but to no avail.
Heat 7: Nicholls Lindgren Correy Smolinski 3-3 24-18 60.3
Yet again the placings never change after the first corner (sound familiar) with Nicholls an easy winner as Smolinski is tailed off at the back
Heat 8: Allen Janniro Hefenbrock Smethills 5-1 29-19 61.5
With Magnus now withdrawn from the meeting Lee comes in as the Wolves try to mount a comeback but as expected they lose out to Janniro and a very fast looking Allen who gains his third paid win of the night.
Heat 9: Hamill (tact) Risager Smethills Schlien (F) 7-2 31-26 60.2
Hamill makes another fast start and is chased hard by the young Aussie who on turn 3 of lap 3 tries to dive under Billy. From the opposite end of the stadium it was hard to see if there was contact but Schlien goes down ( he should have known better to try and pass on this track) handing Lee his first point of the night and the deficit is now down to 5 points.
Heat 10: Harris Correy Janniro Lindgren (F) 4-2 35-28 60.0
Yet more action on turn 3 as Freddie chases Janniro hard for the lead he tries the same move as Schlien in the previous heat on the final turn. Janniro goes down and Freddie also loses control and slides under the airfence. Harris claims the win from Ronnie, as Janniro gets up and pushes over the line for the point with Freddie seeming uninjured pulling himself and machine from his inflatable snare
Heat 11: P.Karlsson Nicholls Smolinski Hefenbrock 3-3 38-31 58.6
PK dives across the field from gate 4 to win easily in another track record, knocking 0.7 seconds off his previous mark.
Heat 12: Allen Risager Correy Hefenbrock 5-1 43-32 61.8
Disaster for the Wolves as Christian locks up badly on the final lap as he tries to challenge Allen for the lead allowing Risager to take second place and give the home team a healthy 11 point lead
Heat 13: Nicholls Harris P.Karlsson (tact) Hamill 5-1 48-33
With PK on a tactical both Wolves gate only for Nicholls to bite the dirt on the first corner. The decision is all for back with seemed the easy option for the ref as many felt Nicholls went down on his own. ( had it been the other way though I guess we would have agreed 100% with the decision). In the re run it’s the Bees who gate. End of story.
Heat 14: Hefenbrock Lindgren Allen Schlien 1-5 49-38
The previously unbeaten Allen replaces Smolinski but it’s the other German who makes the gate and is never headed. Allen tries the outside on lap 2 to take the lead but this just gives Freddie a big gap to dive through and follow his joyous team mate home for our first maximum of the day. This is Christian’s first race win of the day in what is amazingly his 13th race.
Heat 15: Nicholls Karlsson Harris Lindgren 4-2 53-40 58.2
Not for the first time today ‘ from the gate’ is the best way to describe this heat as all play follow the leader who sets yet another track record knocking 0.4 off PK’s best.
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Fine, Sunny and not too cold
Track: Certainly fast but no chance at all for any passing
Attendance: Excellent crowd certainly swelled by a good number from Wolves
Wolves Performance: Gating was certainly better than in the morning but still unable to click as a ‘team’ and carrying too many riders
Entertainment: Very poor. About 2 genuine passes all evening
Referee: Graham Reeve 50-50 call to exclude Nicholls went with easy option which was probably the right choice. Other than that a quiet night.
Man of the Match: Despite a poor ride in heat 13 our most consistent rider on the night was Peter Karlsson
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 8 Did a captains job but unable to challenge when missed the starts. Could have done no more.
Magnus Karlsson: 3 Only managed 1 race where he was tailed off.
Ronnie Correy: 6 Paid 7 is the score Rocket has been bought in to score. Uneventful night where Ronnie picked up the minor places
Fredrik Lindgren: 7 Unlucky to fall in heat 10 when trying to challenge. Looked sharp but unable to hit the first corner in front.
Billy Hamill: 6 2 good and 2 bad races equates to an average meeting bolstered by a win when wearing the black and white helmet colour
Lee Smethills 4 A tough meeting against 2 strong home reserves. Battled hard and at least managed a point for his efforts.
Christian Hefenbrock 6 Another hard meeting. Showed determination all night and was rewarded with a win in his last race. Again looked very stylish and composed when out in front.
