The majority of Wolves supporters knew as early as last Friday, that the asset nemesis was not going to be in attendance at this meeting. Most (your scribe included),together with no doubt many of the riders felt this was a distinct advantage and would surely yield a maximum 3 point return from this meeting,a mere 2 point lead by the Eagles was surely a formality to claw back and would not take a hungry pack of Wolves, following last weeks display against the Elite’s previous elite, long in doing so……..How wrong we would be,and cliché time in saying Speedway’s a funny old game.
Refreshingly perhaps for our sport was a 6 man team of all Englishmen, blended with youth and track experience. But this was Eastbourne…to quote a good old footie saying….”No one likes us but we don’t care”…you just can’t help it,not to like them and the muted applause and sarcastic boos at the parade proved the point,so much so Dean Barker almost waved to the back straight…I do like it when they forget and wave to our fleet of David Brown’s and Caterpillars………
Toss:Dean Barker(Eastbourne)called correct-Tails,coin actually stuck in shale side up.Eastbourne gates 1 & 3
Heat 1: P Karlsson,Norris,Moore,M Karlsson 3-3 (3-3) 55.53
Peter Karlsson powered from the gate in true PK aggressive style,so much so he nearly lowered Mikael’s track record, set against Eastbourne, narrowly missing out (T/R=55.49)sadly Magnus was shut out coming out of bend 2 and soon tailed off.
Heat 2: Lawson,Bridger,Appleton,Hefenbrock 3-3 (6-6) 56.87
Accomplished ride by William, held off Lewis Bridger who was always on the pace.A repeat of the 1-2 from last years U18 final.Christian messed up on bend 1 and never got into the race.Andrew Moore took a closer look at the action having come out a race too early for his r/r ride.
Heat 3:Barker,Correy,Moore(r/r),Lindgren 2-4 (8-10) 57.70
Freddie on 2 mins finally makes it to the track on Billy Hamill’s machine, never looking comfortable or happy on it and so it proved within the race.Dean Barker lead comfortably for 3 laps until the ever persistent Ronnie Correy was just pipped out of it on the line.Freddie exchanged a couple of times with Andrew Moore, but the latter final sucomb.
Heat 4: rerun:Bridger,Hamill,Howe,Hefenbrock 2-4(10-14) 57.53
Young Lewis Bridger ruffled the feathers of Wolves No2 Billy Hamill by bolting from the gate and showing much maturity in holding the former World Champion.Hamill pushed hard for 4 laps all to no avail, for all he cared it could have been a bleached haired Swede coming to an end of an illustrious career rather than a 16 year old who gave up school a year early to take up an occupation rather than an education….Christian came out on Lawson machinery, but made no difference….
Heat 5: rerun:Lindgren,Norris,Correy,Moore 4-2(14-16) 57.36
Following plenty of movement on the grid,Freddie flew from the traps, this time on his own machinery,to record a fine win over David Norris.Ronnie ‘hugged’ the curb for his customery third and 1 point return.
Heat 6: P Karlsson,Howe,M Karlsson,Appleton 4-2(18-18) 57.46
David Howe made the gate and rode hard into turns 1&2 but Peter Karlsson has ridden these turns too often to be out foxed.PK,having been forced wide from gate4 made a cute cut back and gained his speed to take a comfortable heat 6 win over the former Olympique champion. This time Magnus showed a bit more ‘go’ than in recent weeks and but up a bold effort for third.
Heat 7: Norris(r/r),Barker,Hamill,Lawson 1-5(19-23) 57.73
David Norris from gate 4 rode a wide berth and took a comfortable heat win.Dean Barker held off Hamill, who’d totally missed the gate with William Lawson slowing and failing to complete 4 laps when his bike would go no more.Things not looking too good at this stage.
Heat 8: Bridger,M Karlsson,Moore,Hefenbrock 2-4(21-27) 58.38
Lewis Bridger maintained his fine Monmore form with an impressive win out of trap 2.Magnus Karlsson managed to hold off Andrew Moore for at least 3 laps to take a much needed 2 points for a wounded looking Wolves. At this point perhaps Magnus would have been well advised to let Moore through,so to enable a tactical ride in the next race. However following Maggie’s recent fortunes-all points are certainly welcome.
Heat 9: Lindgren,Howe,Appleton,Correy 3-3(24-30) 57.97
Lindgren was pushed hard for a couple of laps by Howe, but in the end held on for a much needed win,Correy was earlier muscled out of the action and unable to claw back the Eastbourne No6.
Heat 10: P Karlsson,Bridger,Barker,M Karlsson 3-3(27-33) 58.40
The difference in Karlsson form certainly showed in this heat. This was certainly not Peter’s most prolific heat of the season to date, but he was made to work hard for his heat win by the quickening Bridger. But shere gut and determination got the skipper home. However,Maggie’s night came to an all familiar end.
Heat 11: Norris,Hamill,Moore,Lawson 2-4(29-37) 57.96
Who really cares lets get on with the next race!!!!!
At the interval there was much discussion amongst the terraced Wolves fans where things were going wrong.Total disbelief was being shed, how could we be down by so many.Honesty was, with Bridger still to ride at least 3 more times a certain defeat….not again!!! However…..Peter Adams is about to make a match winning tactical decision…
Heat 12: P Karlsson (T/S-15m start),Correy,Barker,Bridger 8-1(37-38) 58.42
WOW!!!!!!!! Pure Correy Magic…..this race will no doubt go down in the record books as a double points win for Peter Karlson,But the ‘donkey’ work was conducted by the Rocket.Within a lap and a half,a 1-5 deficit was turned into an 8-1 profit.Ronnie covered every bit of shale in first coming under Barker and then drifting wide and shutting out a quickening Lewis Bridger.Meanwhile the bespectacled leader of the pack was hunting the inside, swept in typical manner and spat out 2 balding eagles in his wake, his only problem was now a charging American on his outside.PK no doubt shouted out in true Swedish black country to,well lets say “shift” to take maximum points.Ronnie’s ride last week over Nicholls was good….this was bloody fantastic…..”there’s only one Ronnie Correy…..”
Heat 13: Hamill,P Karlsson,Norris,Howe 5-1(42-39) 58.22
What a difference a year makes. This heat and another were dreaded…..not anymore. The boys were right on the gas,PK herding home Billy for a maximum return.Team Riding at its best…."T'as une tête a faire sauter les plaques d'egouts!" to quote Delboy.
Heat 14: Bridger,Barker,Lawson,Lindgren 1-5(43-44) 59.82
Wouldn’t you just know it.Freddie just can’t get it right in this damn heat, especially from the outside gate first indications were he’d clipped the rear of Barker’s wheel, but having the luxury of a later replay,it was no more than a mistake whilst under severe pressure…..bugger
Heat 15: Hamill,P Karlsson,Bridger,Norris(F) 5-1(48-45)
Billy lived upto the mantle of the ‘Bullet’ he absolutely flew from trap 3 followed by PK…that was it,’though shalt not pass’ so much so Mr Floppy decided to take an early bit of relaxation, and true Joe and Pertunia style decided to wave to all the Wolves supporters…..what a nice man!!!!!! Give me plenty more of these heats over the season with this pairing.Loads of aggression and pace, great understaning between 2 riders who have done many a lap or two….get in 2 points plus an extra equals 3.
Well at the end of heat11 many a report would certainly have sounded different. In truth these were points robbed from the nest of Eagles, but life and speedway is never ever fair.In times to come this will no doubt happen to our good selves(I certainly hope not) Take ourselves back to last season, with a missing No1 and a then in-form reserve, the pack came so-close a wonderful victory. How pity the leader of the current GP series was not there to be part of it,in truth would it have been a different story. My slant on it is yes,the score would have been different, but still in the favour of the home side.I strongly believe this had some effect on the home team, but heck who cares…bring ‘em on- 3 points banked and onto the Bulldogs,a team we can ill-afford to let go after 11 heats.
Best wishes dear Nicki, hope the opp went well, wouldn’t want you to miss Wroclaw!!!!!!! Keep exercising your wrist!!!!!!!!!!!!
