Wolves 47 Reading 44 Elite league ‘A’ 1st May 2006
Parry’s International Wolves:
Peter Karlsson 3,3,3,3,X = 12
Magnus Karlsson 0,0,3,1 = 4
Ronnie Correy 2*,1*,1,1 = 5+2
Freddie Lindgren 3,2,3,2 = 10
Billy Hamill 2,3,3,1,2 =1
Lee Smethills 0,0,0 = 0
Christian Hefenbrock 3,0,2*,0,0 = 5+1
Reading Bulldogs
Greg Hancock 2,3,4^,2,3 =14
Andy Smith 1*,0,1,1* = 3+2
Travis McGowan 1,1*F,3 = 5+1
Matej Zagar 0,2,2,3,X = 7
Charlie Gjedde 1,1*,2,0 = 4+1
Sam Simota 1*,2,0 = 3+1
Janusz Kolodziej 2,3,0,2*,1 8+1
Comment: So the new look Reading Bulldogs came to town for the first time with a solid looking team and an insider in the pits to aid with their cause to inflict our first home defeat of the season in the league. With Lawson on school leave and Wilson riding elsewhere we again welcomed Lee Smethills to the heady heights of the Elite League to pit his skills against the hottest reserve in the league so far.
The toss Won by Greg Hancock who elected for the inside gates in Heat 1.
Heat 1: Karlsson P,Hancock,Smith,Karlsson M 3-3 55.37
PK made no mistake from gate 2 and powered round 4 untroubled laps to set a new track record , beating his Brothers best by .12 seconds. Magnus gated 3rd but was overtaken just before the end of the first lap just as his bike almost spluttered to a halt.
Heat 2: Hefenbrock,Kolodziej,Simota,Smethills 3-3 6-6 57.53
Christian put his previous weeks gating problems behind him as he secured a tapes to flag win. Lee also gated well but a good first corner from Kolodziej and a lap 2 pass from Simota saw his efforts unrewarded. Both Bulldogs looked good on a track I believe they had never ridden before.
Heat 3: Lindgren,Correy,McGowan,Zagar 5-1 11-7 57.62
It was Freddies turn this time to fly from the tapes but Ronnie chose the hard route. He used his customary cut back off the second bend from gate 4 to nip inside Zagar and as McGowan made a mess of turn 3 a white line hugging end to the lap saw ‘The Rocket comfortably following his team mate home for a maximum as a cry from the crowd went in Zagar’s direction ‘ GP star my **** !! ‘
Heat 4: Kolodziej,Hamill,Gjedde,Heffenbrock 2-4 13-11 57.74
The Bulldogs bite back. Billy gates and looks to be set for the 4th home win of the night but Kolo puts the pressure on trying both inside and outside before finally diving under a bemused Billy down the back straight on lap 4. A disappointing race for Christian ends as he slides off on lap 4.
Heat 5: Hancock,Lindgren,Correy,Smith 3-3 16-14 57.13
This one was all over from the traps with all the riders comfortably holding their positions throughout.
Heat 6: Karlsson P,Simota,Gjedde,Karlsson M 3-3 19-17 57.11
Both Karlssons gate but rounding the first turn Magnus goes nowhere and is easily passed by both visitors. Gjedde settles for third and follows his partner round as PK vanishes into the distance
Heat 7: Hamill,Zagar,Mcgowan,Smethills 3-3 22-20 57.58
Billy looks far more determined after his first heat relegation and rides a very wide line the whole race to win easily. Lee was well outpaced.
Heat 8: Karlsson M,Hefenbrock,Smith,Kolodiej 5-1 27-21 58.64
Beforehand this looked like a heat we could really put our foot in it but hey Maggie has to have his 1 ride. Both Wolves gate but exiting turn 2 Christian locks up, he does well to hold on and amazingly stays in second place behind Magnus. An easy 5-1 as Smith rides an excellent first 2 laps to keep his team-mate at the rear. Was this really the man who passed Hamill in his last race??
Heat 9: Lindgren,Gjedde,Correy,Simota 4-2 31-23 57.84
Freddie rides a perfect first corner from gate 1 taking Gjedde out wide to allow Ronnie to dive inside. Gjedde however rides a wide 3rd bend and retakes Ronnie for the 2 points. Freddie’s lead is substantial though and he picks up his second win of the night.
Heat 10: Karlsson P,Zagar,Karlsson M, McGowan 4-2 35-25
PK gates again and is gone Magnus though battles hard with McGowan and when the Aussie’s bike leaps up as he enters the home straight ending lap 2 Magnus somehow manages to miss the prostrate Bulldog and his bike. For some unexplainable reason though the referee decides not to put on the red lights and only a quick thinking marshall waves his flag to stop the PK express ploughing into McGowan. Travis sportingly acknowledges Magnus’ efforts in missing him. The lead is now 10 Tactical time??
Heat 11: Hamill,Hancock,Smith,Smethills 3-5 38-30 57.47
Oh Yes (well I had to say it once!!!) With Gregory donning the Black and White cap it’s up to his fellow countryman to tarnish the Bulldogs ambitions and after Greg makes an error entering the first turn it’s game over as Billy fires his way to make sure the lead only reduces by 2
Heat 12: McGowan,Kolodiej,Correy,Hefenbrock 1-5 39-35 58.02
The expected reserve change sees the visitors bite back. Ronnie gates but gets caught mid track as he is passed on either side on the first turn. Christian after missing the start never gets into the race.
Heat 13: KarlssonP,Hancock,Hamill,Gjedde 4-2 43-37 57.96
After winning umpteen races from the gate PK decides to practice his overtaking as he flies down the backstraight under his American opponent. He then appears to slow to block Hancock and allow Billy round the outside. Not to be outdone by his buddie again Greg soon repasses and makes a hard move to ensure he hols onto it as Billy tries to go round him as they cross the start line for the third time.
Heat 14: Zagar,Lindgren,KoloDziej,Hefenbrock 2-4 45-41 58.19
The dreaded heat 14 gate 4 strikes Freddie again as he is forced wide on the first corner. He soon recovers though and on lap 2 passes Kolo to take second place. Christian is well adrift again and does a 360 spin on the first corner on lap 2.
Heat 15: Hancock,Hamill,Karlsson P EX, Zagar EX 2-3 47-44 58.48
Zagar turns from Bulldog to Pitbull as he passes Billy on the entering the back straight but he decides to keep going right and simply deposits Billy on the track while taking his bike all the way around the 3rd turn. This seems to be ANOTHER totally calculated piece of simply dirty riding by Zagar on the Monmore back straight. With the jeers ringing round the terraces the yellow light signifies the end of zagar’s evening and Hamill takes an ambulance trip back to the pits.
RE RUN- PK again misses the gate and seems to put the power on too soon round the first bend as he rears and spins. An already battered Hamill takes evasive action and lies his bike down as PK in also unceremoniously dumped on the first turn shale. Greg totally bemused rides slowly down the back straight as he looks for the referee to put the lights on. PK and Billy both stand in the middle of the track awaiting the decision, there is non. Hancock then speeds up off turn 4 as he realises the race is not going to be stopped. Wrong again,as he passes the tapes the red lights finally appear and Pk is excluded as the cause of the stoppage which almost didn’t stop.
RE RE RUN A weary Hamill is no match and Hancock races to the win.
Comment/Summary:Another excellent nights racing will sadly be overshadowed by the actions of 1 rider. The Wolves top 3 did enough to secure the points but Reading showed why they are the team to beat this season. PK’s breaking of the track record only goes to show what an excellent job the track staff are doing to give us fabulous entertainment every week.
Weather: Dry after a showery day, got damn cold late on Is it really May???
Track: The showers earlier must have helped but this must be the best racing circuit in the country at the moment.
Attendance: Slightly disappointing for a Bank Holiday. Very few visiting fans sadly though it appeared
Wolves Performance: The top 3 did ther job with Ronnie again chipping in. Christian and Magnus showing the odd glimpse of what could be
Entertainment: Give the riders the track to race on and the entertainment is there for us all
Referee: Margaret Vardy- Terrible. By far the worst referee performance seen at the Green in a long time
Man of the Match: All the top 3 did their job, but for a crucial heat 11 win with hancock on double points and for riding on after his final heat crash my vote goes to Billy ‘the Bullet’ Hamill
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 8 Another top performance by the skipper only marred by a heat 15 exclusion
Magnus Karlsson: 5 Apparently had carboretter? Problems in his first 2 races before winning a crucial heat 8 to give us a lead. Much better than previous weeks
Ronnie Correy: 6 Scored what his is in the team for. A good opening ride set us on our way
Fredrik Lindgren: 8 Double points and 2 race wins. A solid nights work
Billy Hamill: 8 Recovered well both being passed in his first race and dumped in his last.
Christian Hefenbrock: 5 Looked good with 2 paid wins when he gated but off the pace when the gate was missed
Lee Smethills: 4 Rode a good fist race to allow Christian to win but sadly off the pace. Gave it everything all evening though
