Ipswich 50 v Wolves 42, Elite League A, 11th May 2006
Ipswich 50
1 Chris Louis - 1*-3-3-2-1* = 10+2
2 Kim Jansson - 2-1-2-2* = 7+1
3 Robert Miskowiak - 0-0-2*-3 = 5+1
4 Piotr Protasiewicz - 3-2-3-2 = 10
5 Mark Loram - 2-3-3-1*-2 = 11+1
6 Jan Jaros - 1-0-1-1* = 3+1
7 Carl Wilkinson - 3-0-EF-1 = 4
Wolves 42
1 Peter Karlsson - 3-3-3-2-4-3-3 = 21
2 Magnus Karlsson - 0-1-3-0-0 = 4
3 Ronnie Correy - 1*-1*-1-0-0 = 3+2
4 David Norris - 2-2-2-1-3-0 = 10
5 R/R – 3-2-0-0 = 5
6 Jason King - 2-0-0 = 2
7 Christian Hefenbrock - 0-1-1-0 = 2
So for the second evening on the bounce we go into an away fixture with a severely depleted team and uncertain about the replacements. Yesterday’s replacement for Fredrik Lindgren (Dean Barker) caused a great deal of consternation before the meeting but in the event he would have struggled to do a better job for Wolves. So perhaps we should give David Norris the benefit of the doubt before the tapes rise. Jason King rides at reserve for Wolves because it seems that neither of the doubling up riders are available, nor is Lee Smethills, the number 8. Once again we have rider replacement for Billy Hamill who is still suffering from the burns given to him so generously by Matej Zagar.
General feeling from Wolves fans on the terraces before the meeting started was that if we could hold it to a ten point losing margin we would have done well.
Toss: Wolves won the toss and took gates 1 & 3.
Ht 1: P Karlsson, Jansson, Louis, M Karlsson 3-3
The phenomenal Peter Karlsson led from the start and within a lap was clear of the rest. Magnus bottled it in the first turn and allowed the Ipswich pair to dominate him. Very, very easy win for PK who was in a different class.
Ht 2: Wilkinson, J King, Jaroš, Hefenbrock 4-2, 7-5
Ipswich gated for a 5-1 but Jason King drove in tight to the third bend on the first lap and got the power on early to make an excellent inside pass on Jaros.
Ht 3: Protasiewicz, Norris, Correy, Miskowiak 3-3, 10-8
Pepe made a good start but Norris chased him down and was very close at the end of the race. Miskowiak pootled round and made it easy for Ronnie to keep third place.
Ht 4: P Karlsson (R/R), Loram, Hefenbrock, Wilkinson (F/Rem) 2-4, 12-12
PK led from the start to the flag and once again opened a huge gap after just one lap. Christian gated well and held a good line in turns one and two but Wilkinson, on a wide line, fell anyway and later remounted to finish the race last.
Ht 5: P Karlsson, Protasiewicz, M Karlsson, Miskowiak 2-4, 14-16
Peter and Magnus made the gate but Protasiewicz passed Magnus in the second bend but could not catch the super trooper. Magnus rode a clever race to keep Miskowiak behind.
Ht 6: Louis, Norris (R/R), Jansson, J King 4-2, 18-18
A procession with the riders equally spaced out with about one third of a lap covering first to fourth.
Ht 7: Loram, Norris, Correy, Jaroš 3-3, 21-21
Wolves got out of the start first but Loram made up the ground and emerged from the second bend in the lead. Jaros passed Ronnie at the same time but the Rocket fought back and retook the position when Jaros went wide at the end of the first lap.
Ht 8: Re-run M Karlsson, Jansson (15m), Hefenbrock, Wilkinson Ret 2-4, 23-25
Jansson touched the tapes and went off 15m. At the second time of asking Wilkinson fell in the first turn as he was sandwiched by the Wolves riders and could not turn the bike. In the re-re-run Wolves gated but Wilkinson passed Jason for third place on the first lap. At the start of the next lap Jansson caught and passed Jason King and set off after Magnus. Wilkinson suffered an engine failure on the last lap while in third place giving Wolves the lead again. Good ride from Magnus.
Ht 9: Protasiewicz, Miskowiak, Correy (R/R), J King 5-1, 28-26
Now things seemed to fall apart a bit. This was an easy 5-1 for Ipswich.
Ht 10: Louis, Jansson, Norris, Correy 5-1, 33-27
Easy win for Louis. David Norris tried all angles to get past Jansson but there were no mistakes from the Ipswich rider.
Ht 11: Loram, P Karlsson, Jaroš, M Karlsson 4-2, 37-29
This was an incredibly fast race with PK hounding Loram for the full four laps trying to force a mistake. Magnus pushed Jaros hard but also to no avail.
Ht 12: Miskowiak, P Karlsson (T/s), Wilkinson, Correy 4-4, 41-33
Peter Adams uses a tactical substitute option and introduces Peter Karlsson off 15 metres. Ronnie unfortunately failed to complete his required task which was to gate and slow down the Ipswich pair. In fact he also got in PK’s way as he made his way from the back through to second place but by this time the gap to Miskowiak was too big. This was a big opportunity lost.
Ht 13: P Karlsson, Louis, Loram, M Karlsson (R/R) 3-3, 44-36
PK gone! Fantastic! Won by 40 metres! Loram missed the start but passed Magnus at the start of the second lap.
Ht 14: Norris, Protasiewicz, Jaroš, Hefenbrock 3-3, 47-39
Another processional race but David Norris was absolutely flying round a very wide line to record his first win. The others spread themselves out behind him with Christian finishing almost half a lap adrift of the winner.
Ht 15: Re-run P Karlsson, Loram, Louis, Norris (15m) 3-3, 50-42
Norris was too eager and touched the tapes so he was handicapped 15m. Peter Karlsson easily dealt with Louis and Loram in the first turn and cleared off for the expected three points in dominant style. Norris had too much ground to make up after his earlier mistake to raise the Wolves fans hope of anything more from this last heat.
If I had have been offered an eight point defeat before the meeting started I am sure I would have accepted it gracefully. So I guess we did pretty well to be winning the meeting after heat 8 and to keep the scores so tight. One of the big differences between the Arena and Ipswich meetings was the number of points scored by the rider replacement facility which represents the score Billy Hamill may have contributed.
We saw a definite improvement in Magnus’ form and I hope this will improve his self-esteem and lead to more improvements. We know he has the capability – it just needs someone to convince him of the fact. I was disappointed with Ronnie Correy who could have had a bigger impact on this meeting and let us down when he was riding against Ipswich’s weaker riders, especially when PK was on double points.
Unfortunately Christian did not beat an Ipswich rider that was under power or on his machine and did not really influence the score. Possibly the first time he had ridden the track but it’s not the most tricky track on the scene to learn. Jason King scored two more points than I expected and showed a good degree of determination in the reserves race to drive under Jaros. After this he was outgunned.
David Norris notched up ten points from his six rides and was reasonable value. He got beaten twice by Chris Louis which I would not have expected. Finally what can you say about our captain Peter Karlsson? He scored half of the team’s total number of points and rode a fantastic meeting full of grit and determination. There is no other rider I would rather have at the head of our team and no other rider who gives so much excitement when racing. A masterful performance from PK.
Ratings:
Weather: A very pleasant and warm evening in the Suffolk countryside.
Track: Uneven surface on the inside of turns one and two which caught out several riders. Otherwise well prepared.
Attendance: Bigger than average Ipswich crowd. Just an otter’s handful of Wolves fans bothered to make the long journey.
Wolves Performance: Better than expected given the team’s injury problems and availability of suitable replacements. Over the two days the team has performed well beyond expectations.
Entertainment: It was an entertaining meeting because the scores were close for much of it. There was not a great deal of passing to get excited about though.
Referee: All decisions correct in my opinion.
Man of the Match: No doubt – the 21 point PETER KARLSSON.
Wonderful to watch.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 9 Awesome! How often does a rider contribute half of the total points scored by a team?
Ronnie Correy: 4 He has more in him than this performance and we needed to see it last night.
Magnus Karlsson: 5 An improvement on his recent form. I really hope he is coming out from the doldrums and will rediscover his true standard.
David Norris: 7 Not quite as good as his team mate was on Wednesday but a decent job done for us. Thanks David.
Christian Hefenbrock: 3 Right off the boil just when we needed him to be red-hot.
Jason King: 5 One very good race but outclassed in his other two outings.
The bonus point should be a reasonably achievable target when Ipswich come to the Green for the return fixture. Hopefully we will have all of the team fit and healthy and raring to go for that meeting.
