Dean Barker 1 2 3 3 3 1 = 13
Billy Hamill R/R
William Lawson 2 1* 1 1* 3 1 = 9+2
Christian Hefenbrock 0 0 2* 0 = 2+1
Toss: Arena Essex win the toss and choose gates 1 and 3.
Heat 1: Bager, Peter, Max, Magnus , 58.3, 4-2.
Even start, Max takes Peter wide at the first bend and Bager slips through. Peter passes Max on bend 3 of lap 1 for 2nd. Magnus way last.
Heat 2: Puszakowski, William, Hurry, Chris, 60.0, 4-2, 8-4.
Puszakowsi leads from the gate, with William 2nd and Chris 3rd. Hurry tries to squeeze between the Wolves pair out of the 3rd bend on lap 1 but can only get past Chris. William rides a very intelligent race to keep Hurry in 3rd.
Heat 3: Lanham, Johnno, Deano, Ronnie, 60.0, 5-1, 13-5.
Lanham and Ronnie are even from the start, but Ronnie is forced wide at the first bend and Johhno slips through. Ronnie pushes Johnno for 2 laps but can’t get past. The Wolves pair close in on the last bend and there is a blanket finish for the minor placings between Johnno, Deano and Ronnie. Mick Bates gives 2nd to Johnno, but from where I was stood on the back straight in line with the starting gate, Deano was very unlucky not to be given the decision. Ronnie unlucky not to score in a race where he tried hard.
Heat 4: Peter (R/R), Hurry, Kylmakorpi, Chris, 58.9, 3-3, 16-8.
The Wolves pair gate in the lead, but Chris drifts wide out of bend 2 and Hurry gets past. Kylmakorpi also passes him down the home straight of lap 1. Peter is well clear and can’t be caught.
Heat 5: Peter, Lanham, Johnno, Magnus, 59.2, 3-3, 19-11.
Johnno struggling with his bike – where have we heard that before? – and eventually comes out on Puszakowski’s bike. Again the Wolves pair gate in front, but Magnus falls back to last by the end of the back straight on lap 1. Lanham pushes Peter for a couple of laps before falling back. Poor ride by Magnus.
Heat 6: Bager, Deano (R/R), William, Max, 59.6, 3-3, 22-14.
Deano gates, but Bager squeezes past him out of the 4th bend on lap 1. Max is too fast on the 1st bend of lap 2, drifts wide and William gets past. Mikael doesn’t look anywhere near fit.
Heat 7: Deano, Kylmakorpi, Ronnie, Puszakowski, 59.2, 2-4, 24-18.
Deano and Puszakowski are even from the gate, with Ronnie 3rd. Kylmakorpi passes Ronnie on lap 4 of lap 1 down the outside. Kylmakorpi is very spectacular and pushes Deano hard but can’t find a way past.
Heat 8: Bager, Hurry, William (Reserve Ride), Magnus, 59.9, 5-1, 29-19.
Peter Adams switches the reserves. Magnus, Hurry and William gate level, but Hurry drifts wide to 3rd. Bager drives past all 3 down the home straight of lap 1 in a spectacular pass. Hurry gets past William on the 1st bend of lap 2, and then he goes under Magnus on bend 3 of lap 4. William passes Magnus on the 2nd bend of lap 4. Another poor ride by Magnus who goes from 1st to last.
Heat 9: Ronnie (R/R), Chris (Reserve Ride), Johnno, Lanham, 59.9, 1-5, 30-24.
Peter Adams again switches the reserves. Wolves gate on a 5-1. Chris drifts wide out of the 2nd bend but manages to recover. Ronnie rides a great race on the inside and despite Chris drifting wide on each bend, Ronnie covers him and Johnno is never close enough to capitalise.
Heat 10: Deano, Bager, Ronnie, Max, 59.3, 2-4, 32-28.
Deano makes an excellent start and is gone. Bager pushes him for 2 laps but can’t get past. Ronnie passes Max out of bend 4 on lap 2. Good ride by Deano to ruin Bager’s maximum.
Heat 11: Kylmakorpi, Peter, William (Reserve Ride), Puszakowski (F/Ex) 59.4, 3-3, 35-31.
William replaces Magnus. Arena gate on a 5-1, William goes under Puszakowski on the 2nd bend of lap 1. Puszakowski runs into the back of William on bend 4 of the 2nd lap, falls and is rightly Excluded when he stays down. Lucky for Wolves as Peter was last and struggling.
In the re run Kylmakorpi makes a fast start and rides a good line to keep Peter out despite all of Peter’s efforts.
Heat 12: William, Johnno, Hurry, Ronnie (F/Ex), 59.7, 3-3, 38-34
Excellent start by William who fights off a strong challenge from Johnno on the first bend. Ronnie picks up too much drive, drifts wide on the 1st bend and falls. Ronnie’s bike is stuck under the air fence and he can’t get it out. The race is frustratingly stopped with William in a good lead. Ronnie is rightly excluded.
Surely William can’t do so well in the re run?
William proves us all wrong as he repeats the dose and fends off another strong Johnno challenge on the 1st bend. William rides an excellent line for a superb win. Hurry pulls up on the back straight of the last lap but manages to coast home for a point. Great Stuff from William.
Heat 13: Kylmakorpi, Peter, Max, Chris (R/R), 59.7, 4-2, 42-36.
Peter makes a reasonable start but Kylmakorpi rides a fast line around bends 1 and 2 and emerges in the lead. Max comfortably 3rd with Chris way last.
Heat 14: Deano, Lanham, William (Reserve Ride), Puszakowski, 2-4, 44-40.
Peter Adams again switches reserves to give William a well deserved extra ride. Another electric start by Deano. Puszakowski rides into Lanham as they both exit bend 2. He falls but gets off the track. Lanham closes in on Deano on the last lap but Deano rides an excellent line to keep him out. Good ride by Deano.
Heat 15: Peter (Y), Kylmakorpi (R), Deano (G), Bager (B), 59.6, 2-4, 46-44.
Wolves win the toss and take gates 1 and 3. Peter has learnt from Kylmakorpi’s fast line of heat 13 and takes gate 3. From the start, Kylmakorpi leads slightly but Peter rides around him out of bend 2, and disappears into the sunset. Deano tries hard but can’t find a way past Kylmakorpi, who holds on for the vital second place. Bager well last.
Weather: Excellent, dry and warm, but got cooler as the sun set.
Track: Very Strange – it seemed very dry and slick. It was watered after every couple of races as the Water Tanker had broken down in the afternoon meaning track preparation wasn’t excellent. However the racing belied this and the meeting was one of the best I’ve seen at Purfleet with a fair share of passing and incident.
Attendance: A good sized crowd – up on last year.
Wolves Performance: The Wolves fans that had made the visit probably expected a comprehensive defeat – especially with Barker – who had only scored 3 for Eastbourne in his visit this year – guesting for Freddie. A great effort therefore to only lose by 2 points – and if Magnus had managed to score a point – he was in points scoring positions in each of his rides – we may have pulled off a shock result.
Entertainment: Excellent – as mentioned above one of the best I have witnessed at Arena.
Referee: Mick Bates – steady performance – got each of the exclusion decisions correct.
Man of the Match: William Lawson – superb effort from one of such inexperience.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 8 Super performance.
Magnus Karlsson: 1 Very poor – was scoring points in each of his rides, but delivered none.
Ronnie Correy: 7 Unlucky not to score in Heat3, great ride in Heat 9.
Dean Barker: 8 Great performance from our guest especially following on from his poor performances for Eastbourne and Arena at this track.
Billy Hamill: R/R
Christian Hefenbrock: 3 Struggled on the tight circuit, despite making some fast starts.
William Lawson: 10 Great performance, 100% effort and a superb ride in Heat 12. Scored points in each of his rides.
