Poole were dangerous looking opponents at Monmore Green, having given Wolves a gating lesson in a 52-43 challenge match win at Monmore in March. Wolves welcomed back their wounded pack members Fredrik (leg) and Billy (obstacles). The Pirates arrived with a patched up Bjarne Pedersen (wrist) but having thrown Krys Kasprzak overboard (shoulder). Heavy rain on Monday morning had left the meeting in danger but the weather improved and the meeting went ahead as planned on an excellent track. Bjarne Pedersen won the toss and chose to break.
Heat 1 ¡V Peter Karlsson, Pedersen, Boyce, Magnus Karlsson. 3-3, 3-3.
A hard first bend from Bjarne takes PK wide and he takes the lead. Big mistake. A fired up Wolves skipper stalks him for three laps before charging hard underneath on the 3rd bend of the last lap. Excellent, aggressive riding from Peter.
Heat 2 ¡V Jonas Davidsson, Hefenbrock, Lawson, Daniel Davidsson. 3-3, 6-6
The Davidssons gate but Daniel drifts wide on the second bend, almost clipping the fence and the Wolves pair are through to square the heat. Daniel pushes William Lawson hard but William hangs on.
Heat 3 ¡V Lindback, Lindgren, Correy, Walasek. 3-3, 9-9
Freddie hits the first bend in front but a brave outside line from Antonio takes him to the front. Ronnie battles his way past Walasek on the inside of the first lap.
Heat 4 ¡V Hamill, Lindback, Daniel Davidsson, Hefenbrock. 3-3, 12-12
Billy rides a spectacular first bend to round Antonioio and storm to a fine win. Christian looks uncomfortable in 3rd and Davidsson takes advantage by nipping past on the 2nd lap, 2nd bend.
Heat 5 ¡V Lindgren, Boyce, Correy, Pedersen. 4-2, 16-14
An excellent race. The Pirates gate but Boyce does Pedersen no favours at all on the first bend and takes him wide. Freddie is quickly through the gap on the inside to take the win. Boyce, Correy and Pedersen spend the rest of the race fighting over who owns the white line, a cracking battle ending in that order. Wolves edge in front.
Heat 6 ¡V Peter Karlsson, Jonas Davidsson, Boyce, Magnus Karlsson. 3-3, 19-17
Easy win from the gate for PK. Magnus briefly joins him at the front but is mugged on the back straight as the visitors go either side of him. Magnus visibly shuts off going into the 3rd bend to the derision of some of the home fans.
Heat 7 ¡V Hamill, Lawson, Lindback, Walasek. 5-1, 24-18
A great gate from Billy on the inside. With the Poole riders perhaps wary of Hamill, William spots his chance and turns hard on the inside to take both of them out of the second bend. He makes no mistakes and adds Antoninho to his list of victims!
Heat 8 ¡V Magnus Karlsson, Boyce, Jonas Davidsson, Hefenbrock. 3-3, 27-21
Magnus emerges from the pits on PK¡¦s bike and pulls away at the front for an easy win much to everyone¡¦s amazement. It¡¦s another poor ride from Christian at the back.
Heat 9 ¡V Pedersen, Correy, Lindgren, Jonas Davidsson. 3-3, 30-24
Bjarne from the gate and the home pair soon settle for the 3-3.
Heat 10 ¡V Peter Karlsson, Walasek, Jonas Davidsson, Magnus Karlsson. (Lindback 2 minutes). 3-3, 33-27
Antonioninho¡¦s bike dies on the line and he¡¦s excluded on 2 minutes. PK¡¦s bike does it again, MK¡¦s bike too, (sadly.)
Heat 11 ¡V Pedersen, Hamill, Lawson, Boyce. 3-3, 36-30
Pedersen makes another fine start and Billy can¡¦t catch him. Boyce holds 3rd place and the white line, defying Lawson¡¦s attempts to pass him on the inside. William switches to the outside, fairly unfamiliar territory for him at Monmore and brilliant rounds the Australian on the 3rd lap, a stunning, brave ride from the youngster.
Heat 12 ¡V Correy, Walasek, Hefenbrock, Jonas Davidsson. 4-2, 40-32
Another hectic first bend. Poole gate for the 5-1 but Ronnie executes a perfect cutback to take them both on the second bend. Christian rounds Davidsson on the 2nd bend and holds on to 3rd place extending the lead to 8 points.
Heat 13 ¡V Hamill, Peter Karlsson, Walasek, Pedersen. 5-1, 45-33
A brilliant start and first bend from the Wolves demon duo and some more spectacular team riding. Heat 13: who would you prefer? Mikael and David or PK and Billy? ƒº There¡¦s much amusement for Wolves fans at the back where Walasek does his best impression of a rolling roadblock to keep Pedersen at the back. Bjarne is clearly frustrated and pushes Walasek wide on the last lap, only for the Pole to come charging past him on the outside and pinch the point back on the line. This is probably Walasek¡¦s best ever pass at Monmore!
Heat 14 ¡V Lindback (6 pts), Lindgren, Lawson, Daniel Davidsson. 3-6, 48-39
Poole put a black and white helmet colour on Antonionionioinho and Freddie¡¦s heat 14 drought continues.
Heat 15 ¡V Peter Karlsson, Pedersen, Hamill, Lindback. 4-2, 52-41
And the match turns full circle and we¡¦re back where we started¡K a fine start from Pedersen but PK is in no mood to surrender his maximum. He¡¦s 100% committed and SO aggressive as he¡¦s all over Bjarne¡¦s back wheel looking for a gap. There isn¡¦t one so he makes his own, charging up the inside into the 3rd bend of lap 4. Bjarne cuts back cleverly and almost gets it back on the inside, only for PK to keep the power full on out by the fence as he wins the race to the line. What a race¡K what a rider ¡V another stunning ride from our hero.
Weather: Heavy rain in the morning and another sharp shower at 5pm turned into a really pleasant evening.
Track: Excellent. Doc Bridgett and co. put in some early morning work before the greyhound meeting to produce another terrific racing surface. The Doc is turning into one of CVS¡¦ most shrewd signings.
Attendance: A little below average.
Wolves Performance: Poole are always dangerous visitors to Monmore these days. Even without Kasprzak this was an impressive and powerful display from Wolves.
Entertainment: Another Monmore 2006 cracker. Poole gated, Wolves passed them.
Referee: Tony Steele. No decisions to make, though he did leave the yellow exclusion light flashing for the whole of heat 10 for some reason.
Man of the Match: The only thing better than PK was his bike, which took Magnus round for it¡¦s 6th win of the night!
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 11 Brilliant. Stunning. Fantastic. Superb. Awesome. Inspired. Exceptional. Unbelievable. Incredible. Excellent. Terrific. Great. Marvellous. Fabulous. Wonderful. Did I mention he was pretty impressive?
Magnus Karlsson: 4 An easy win on Peter¡¦s bike punctuated three poor rides on his own machinery. In his own words he plans to break into Peter¡¦s workshop when he¡¦s not looking. But is it machinery or mental?
Ronnie Correy: 8 Looked confident and aggressive on his classic inside line at the Green.
Fredrik Lindgren: 6 A good score but a subdued performance, possibly still feeling his injury.
Billy Hamill: 8 Back to his spectacular best after a painful injury.
William Lawson 9 A rider of his experience has no right to beat Lindback or Boyce, let alone from the back. Very impressive, sign this contract please William!
Christian Hefenbrock: 4 Had the easier rides from reserve but didn¡¦t really take advantage.
Many fans wondered why Peter Adams had opted not to give the impressive William Lawson extra rides later in the meeting. Adams explained to Tim Hamblin of the Express and Star, "I've got to keep my eye on Lawson because he is going to get completely blown out if we're not careful. It's very demanding on him, mentally and physically, living where he does.¡¨ William lives in Auchterarder, Perthshire, a 625 mile round trip for home matches!
Verdict: The magic is definitely back at Monmore in 2006. Another very exciting and entertaining meeting on an excellent racetrack. We need to win a few away matches if we¡¦re going to challenge for the playoffs though and Oxford on Wednesday looks like an essential place to start.
