Wednesday 31 May 2006, Poole Pirates 47 Wolves 43 Elite League (A)
(Wolves win bonus point)
Poole Pirates: 47
1. Bjarne Pedersen 1*,3,3,R,1,3 = 11+1
2. Craig Boyce 2,0,3,1,2 = 8
3. Greg Walasek 2,1*,2*,0,0 = 5+2
4. Antonio Lindback 1*,2,2,3,3,2* = 13+2
5. Krzysztof Kasprzak - Rider Replacement
6. Jonas Davidsson 1,1*,1*,3,1 = 7+2
7. Daniel Davidsson 3,0,0 = 3
Parry’s International Wolves: 43
1. Peter Karlsson 3,3,3,2*,1 = 12+1
2. Magnus Karlsson 0,0,1*,0 = 1+1
3. Ronnie Correy 0,0,3,2 = 5
4. Freddie Lindgren 3,3,2*,2 = 10+1
5. Billy Hamill 2,2,1,3,0 = 8
6. Ben Wilson 0,1*,0 = 1+1
7. Christian Hefenbrock 2,1*,2,1*,0 = 6+2
This night could be summed up by one thing……………..OOOH SOOO CLOSE! With Poole missing the injured Kasprzak there were quite a few Wolves fans who thought we might pull off the win – and as the match went on it seemed more and more likely. Sadly though it wasn’t to be and we had to be content with just the one bonus point. A good match that was close throughout and we actually took the lead at one point….I always preferred the old 13 heat formula – Happiness IS 40-38!
Heat 01: P Karlsson, Boyce, Pedersen, M Karlsson 3-3 57.88 3-3
PK and Magnus gate and are briefly on a 5-1 until Magnus goes too wide on the 3rd bend and the Poole riders cut underneath him. PK records the fastest race of the season so far at Poole.
Heat 02: D Davidsson, Hefenbrock, J Davidsson, Wilson 4-2 59.19 7-5
The Poole riders gate but Christian sweeps round Jonas on the first bend. Great ride from Christian to hold off Jonas who was all over him for 4 laps. Good blocking!
Heat 03: Lindgren, Walasek, Lindback, Correy3-3 59.14 10-8
Freddie makes the gate and surprisingly it’s Walasek rather than Freddie’s old ‘mate’ Lindback who does all the chasing. Ronnie has an engine failure on the last lap when a long way at the back. BIG effort from Walasek on the last bend and it looks from our view on the second bend like he’s got Freddie on the line…the ref disagrees though and it’s a 3-3.
Heat 04: Pedersen, Hamill, Hefenbrock, D Davidsson 3-3 58.23 13-11
Pedersen in as R/R makes the gate and wins easily. The Wolves riders tuck in behind for a 3-3. Cloive Fisherrr annoys the Wolves fans by calling Christian ‘Hofenbrock’ – irritating man…can’t he READ?!
Heat 05: P Karlsson, Lindback, Walasek, M Karlsson 3-3 58.09 16-14
Cracking ride from PK as the Poole riders make the start and he cuts between them on the 2nd bend/back straight and heads off into the distance. Magnus tails off at the back.
Heat 06: Pedersen, Hamill, Wilson, Boyce 3-3 58.27 19-17
Pedersen wins again from the gate but the real story is Ben’s beating of Boyce. Boyce gates on Ben but Ben keeps the throttle on round the first bend to get past. Boyce then throws everything at Ben but the kid hangs on for the point. Great ride from Ben!
Heat 07: Lindgren, Lindback, J Davidsson, Correy 3-3 58.68 22-20
Lindback in as R/R and blots his copybook by hitting the tapes first time out – goes off 15 metres in the rerun. In the second running Lindback easily catches and passes Ronnie on 3rd bend of the first lap. Gets past Jonas too and then chases down Freddie but Fred is too far in front and it’s another 3-3.
Heat 08: Boyce, Hefenbrock, M Karlsson, D Davidsson 3-3 59.70 25-23
From the gate – Magnus tries the ‘Ben’ line round Boyce on the first bend but can’t quite pull it off. Christian nips under Magnus but Boyce has gone. ANOTHER 3-3….this is getting a bit dull!
Heat 09: Lindback, Walasek, Hamill, Wilson 5-1 59.10 30-24
Famous last words… from the gate Walasek flies off into the distance. Billy chases Lindback for 4 laps but Lindback is using the line Billy wants (outside) so no way past. Luck almost shines on Wolves as Walasek’s bike dies on the home straight but the momentum is enough for him to cross the line behind Lindback but in front of Billy!
Heat 10: Correy, Lindgren, Boyce, Pedersen(EF) 1-5 60.12 31-29
REVENGE! Pedersen leads from the off as Ronnie ‘rockets’ WIDE round Boyce and Freddie gets underneath him. Pedersen’s bike expires on the 1st bend of the 3rd lap to put Wolves on 5-1. Boyce tries to chase down Freddie but he holds him off. Woohoo!
Heat 11: P Karlsson, Boyce, J Davidsson, M Karlsson 3-3 59.66 34-32
Boyce in as R/R. Poole riders gate but Peter uses the outside line to get by them both. Magnus at the back from the start. That’ll be another 3-3 then.
Heat 12: J Davidsson, Correy, Hefenbrock, Walasek 3-3 59.32 37-35
Davidsson wins from the gate. Wolves riders tuck in behind the team ride Walasek out of it. Strangely Ronnie is on the outside and Christian is holding the inside line.
Heat 13: Hamill, P Karlsson, Pedersen, Walasek 1-5 59.91 38-40
Wolves fans hopes soar as PK and Billy make the gate. Great team riding again to keep Pedersen behind them. Again it looked as though the Poole rider – in this case Pedersen – had got past PK on the run in to the line but the ref gives the 5-1 to Wolves – and we’re in front!
Heat 14: Lindback, Lindgren, J Davidsson, Hefenbrock(F/X) 4-2 59.24 42-42
Fun and games in this race! First running Freddie’s bike dies at the start. He sets off running with it for ¼ lap then dumps it and starts gesturing wildly at the pits for another bike as the seconds are ticking. Ben comes out with his bike and Freddie just makes the line in time! The tapes rise and it’s an unsatisfactory start (possibly Christian moving?). They head round for another go and this time it’s Davidsson who moves. Now by this time Mark Harvey (Freddie’s mechanic) has got Freddie’s bike ready and when the track staff are too slow to open the gate, Mark shoulder charges the air fence himself to get Freddies’s bike out to him! Meanwhile Lindback heads back into the pits for quick alterations before the re-start. They finally make an even start but Christian is trying too hard and slides off on 3rd/4th bend, ending up under the air fence and is excluded. Christian is down for a while being tended by the St John’s but eventually walks away. Finally the race takes place and Lindback wins from the gate. Freddie tries to get underneath him but Lindback has got the best line. All level on the night and the bonus is ours.
Heat 15: Pedersen, Lindback, P Karlsson, Hamill 5-1 58.59 47-43
After their heroics in heat 13 we really thought we might do it – or at least PK might get the win for the draw on the night! Cloive Fisherrr confuses everyone by announcing that Wolves have won the toss and are off 1&3, then the riders come out and we’re off 2&4! I later learnt that it was POOLE who won the toss not us! The Poole riders make the gate and it’s all over. PK chases for a couple of laps but it’s pointless as the Poole riders have the lines covered. Oh B*****KS! Soooooo close to that away win!
Comment/Summary:
Weather: Duller than forecast – and quite cold by the end of the meeting!
Track: Usual Poole fare – although no blue line this time it was fairly slick and once a rider was on the best line there was no way past.
Attendance: Very good including a fair smattering of Wolves fans
Wolves Performance: It’s hard to be critical of a team that got so close to winning but just a couple more points from somewhere would have made the difference.
Entertainment: A few good races but mostly from the gate. Entertaining though due to the closeness of the score.
Referee: Twice made decisions in Wolves’ favour when it looked from our viewpoint that the Poole rider had got the drop. Other than that very little to do.
Man of the Match: It’s got to be Peter Karlsson although Freddie and Christian both deserve an honourable mention.
Rider Ratings: (now on a scale of ten with 6 being the average expectation)
Peter Karlsson: 9 Would definitely have been a 10 if he’d have won heat 15!
Ronnie Correy: 4 Although he picked up in his last 2 rides he was gifted the win when Pedersen’s bike went.
Magnus Karlsson: 3 Poor from Magnus. Hope soared in the first race when he gated but it wasn’t to be!
Fredrik Lindgren: 8 Rode well – was perhaps a bit unnerved by all the bike things in heat 14.
Billy Hamill: 5 Not a great night for Billy but deserves a mention for the heat 13 ride.
Christian Hefenbrock: 8 A good night’s work from Christian. Tired harder than his score suggests.
Ben Wilson: 5 Good ride in heat 6 and good team work in heat 14 when he was first out with a bike for Freddie when his own died.
